Who: Anne Bonney & Erik Northman
Where: Club 13 in good old New York, New York.
When: Sunday night, prime-time.
Why: Anne likes dropping in on old friends.
Warnings: He's a vampire, she's a pirate, they'll probably be talking about the good old days. (That's a 'yes')

Anne had found the place easily enough, one of those sixth sense kind of things she had. She'd been rather at a loss since Jack and Bill had gotten swept away again, leaving her the last of the old gang. Not that she minded, as such, she'd held that position before, she was fairly sure she'd hold it again before things were over.

Then Erik had dropped in, and she figured she'd be remiss if she didn't pay an old friend a visit at least once to make sure he was settling in alright. She hadn't dressed up for the occasion, not really, but she had come from work, which meant she was a little more classy than she was at home. At that particular moment she was perched at the bar, making friends with the tender, she figured if Erik didn't come say hello himself, she'd go find him.

Erik, being his usual, lounging, lazy, catlike self, had been sprawled in a chair on the second floor of the three-storey club. He had Calliope out being her generally cheerful self to a pack of wild ferals that he'd heard were currently being unfavorable in Queens, and Pam was doing her own thing, wherever that was. But he'd been lounging too long, and, true to fashion, he finally got up and walked downstairs to go tease the bartender.

What he didn't expect to see was old friends. Very old friends, at that. Especially this one. Anne Bonney (and Mary Reade, when she was living) had been one of those people he'd met back when the colonies were cropping up and settlements were becoming real cities. They'd met at a pub off the docks of what became Charleston, South Carolina, and had become swift friends. This was before Pam was even a twinkle in Erik's eye.

He sat down beside her and leaned against the bar, entirely smug. "Why, if it isn't the old sea hag, come to run down my rum supply. When did you blow in, Anne?"

"Erik y'old fraud." She said, grinning, "In here? 'bout ten minutes ago. This little corner of reality?" She shook her head, "Been a while now, over a year, not quite two."

There was that amused, open, rogue's grin again, "How've you been keeping yourself old man? Seems like you did alright when you landed here."

"Shreveport, before I came to this reality. And here, I thought that there was nothing left to pioneer, and when I find out otherwise, I find that sea dogs beat me to the punch." He waved the bartender over and asked for his usual before getting the tender to refill Anne's drink.

"Someone told me there were pirates here, but they disappeared a while back. I was not expecting you, for once. Where are you staying now that you're here? One good turn deserves another, after all..."

She nodded, looking serious for the moment, "Jack and Bill were here for a while, and Teague, and then some others not from home. Pretty sure I'm the only one still hanging around though, ain't the first time, won't be the last."

The smile returned, same as ever, "Landed down in Key West, whoever's running this place has a sense of humor, since I ended up in the life of the assistant curator of Croce's Pirate Soul museum down there."

"I'm sorry to hear that you lost your comrades, and gained a thorn in your side," Erik teased, taking the concoction of blood and gin from the bartender, sipping it out of its tumbler.

"Ah, now I'm feeling better about my lot in this world. I was saddled with being a big wig living in Greenwich, if you pardon the expression. Nobody really lives there, least of all Pam and myself. Plastic fabrications of humanity dwell there, but nobody seems to really live. Though to be stuck with all those old relics of the past, I would likely disappear and go back to humble traveling if that were the case for me." As much as he loved the good ol' days, he never wanted to be constantly reminded of them. Anne, however, was a different sort of beast, and she had the mind and wherewithal to stand being surrounded by relics of her own time.

She nodded, "Did that not too long after I got here, actually. The boys wanted to find the Cove, see if there was anything worth the salvage, but mostly it was for the adventure of it."

She shrugged one shoulder then, "Besides, I been out of the business for a while, that started back when me and Mary went our separate ways."

"I still miss the old girl," Erik mentioned around a sip of his drink, "Still, you went to the old stronghold. You know, I'd thought that place had been sunk in any reality by now. Find anything of use there? Or was just finding it enough?"

[info]foughtlikeaman

"So do I. We would've ended up driving each other crazy if we'd stuck together any longer though." She shook her head, "It was just about sunk here, more waterlogged than it was even back home, few bits and pieces left to take back to the museum, but nothin' terrible important."

2009-07-26 10:55 pm UTC (link)
"Shame, that. All good things come to an end, to make way for better things, though." Erik said. "If it weren't for that stronghold, my people's legacy would have surely died long before its time." He shrugged faintly and smirked.

"Someone here said I should go into acting. I don't think they're aware that I've had quite enough of the limelight."

Anne very nearly choked on her drink at that, before cracking up, shaking her head, "They probably just have no idea, bless 'em." A shrug, "Could be said of most people most anytime though."

He got her to laugh, and that was his intention. "No, and I can only hope that they never will. The last thing I need is more people assuming that what I've done in my past has any bearing for what I'm doing now. That, and if I were to namedrop myself at every chance, there'd be no actual heft to my words, only the name. So of the handful of people who do know, I'd rather they'd keep quiet about it."

He smirked, "It's not like I did much, anyway. Just expanded civilization and colonized a few barren wastelands." He looked completely innocent then, taking another drink. "Pioneered what was then modern navigating..."

"Oh no," She agreed, smiling crookedly, "Not a sole accomplishment in that lot even worth remembering." A shrug, "Not like someone else wouldn't've done the same, given time."

The grin was positively wicked at that point, "Me, on the other hand, totally get a kick out of namedropping myself just to watch people boggle."

(Reply to this)

[info]erikbloodred
2009-07-26 11:39 pm UTC (link)
"Not to mention spread Christianity to said barren wastelands, that's more a fault than an accomplishment. If I knew then what I knew now, I would have stuck to the Old Beliefs. Southern Baptists are not worth it." He winked and finished his drink before nudging her. "Of course you do, because they're either completely disbelieving, or utterly baffled how to react. How does one react to the most famous she-pirate in history?"

(Reply to this)

[info]foughtlikeaman
2009-07-26 11:45 pm UTC (link)
"I ain't the most famous, I'm up there, sure, but not the most. And I think my favorite reaction was: 'well you're certainly holding up well for a woman your age'" She shook her head, "I think what confuses them most is that I'm not still pirating, or wearing an eyepatch or something." A shrug, "I've actually been an antiques dealer longern' I ever was a pirate, but folk aren't likely to believe that either."

[info]erikbloodred

"And why not? I've been a Sheriff longer than I was an explorer. Things change. People change. We may look the same as we ever have, but Anne, you know your kind, and by that I don't mean the living legends, are thick. They refuse to accept a change to their own notions." Erik ordered them both another round and couldn't wipe the smirk off his face.

"Have I ever introduced you to Pam? I don't even know if we've seen each other in the past two centuries. We've written plenty..."

(Reply to this)

[info]foughtlikeaman
2009-07-26 11:56 pm UTC (link)
"Can't say that I've met her, no. Can't recall how long it's been since we actually saw each other." Another crooked little smile, "And when you get right down to it the Legends are pretty thick most of the time as well, and probably more resistant to change than everyone else. Just want to keep on doing what they have been. Figure that's why so many of 'em fade."

(Reply to this)

[info]erikbloodred
2009-07-27 12:07 am UTC (link)
"And many of them fade because their legends are forgotten, or never hold any grain of truth any longer." He tapped his fingers on the side of the bar. "With the exception of you and... possibly Buffalo Bill, I don't think there were any left. At least that I knew about. It could be worse."

(Reply to this)

[info]foughtlikeaman
2009-07-27 12:13 am UTC (link)
"Buffalo's still around, we ran in the same circles not too long ago. Last time I saw him ... musta been Woodstock, actually." She scratched the back of her neck, "Think most of his old crew's still around, ain't never been good at keeping track of people myself."

(Reply to this)

[info]erikbloodred
2009-07-27 12:19 am UTC (link)
"Then it's better. When it comes to old family, the only ones I still had are Godric and Pam, and even Pam is relatively new. Godric isn't here. He would have made himself quite known if he were." Erik shrugged then with a sip of his drink. "Still, whatever magic is keeping you alive makes me very happy that magic is around. I don't trust it, but I won't argue its value."

There was a small pause before he thought about it, "On that note, I have yet to try a portkey. Are they, hm. Would you think they'd be safe for someone of my age?" He only worried about magic when it wasn't ancient. He'd never heard of portkeys until just this week, so it was obviously not one of those things he took at face value.

(Reply to this)

[info]foughtlikeaman

She shrugged, "Got here from Key West by portkey. And I ain't heard about them being a problem for anybody. Sneaky uses 'em. Don't know if you know Sneaky, one of the Shadows." She could only see a few of them herself, unless they were pointed out to her directly, but she knew they were around.

[info]erikbloodred
2009-07-27 12:34 am UTC (link)
"I don't know of what you speak," Erik said with a small aloof shrug. "Well, I've heard of them, but I've still yet to see one fully. But I'll take your word for it. I doubt I'll use one, anyway." Shrugging once more, he shook his head. "Even if Sneaky is older than me, it doesn't give me proof. Though from what I've heard, there's only a couple other creatures here that are older than me, and they can teleport themselves."

(Reply to this)

[info]foughtlikeaman
2009-07-27 12:48 am UTC (link)
She nodded at that, "Sneaky should be able to as well, by all rights, well, don't know what it is, ain't direct teleportation, but it might as well be for as much as I know about it." She shrugged, "Ain't rightly been able to since he arrived, figure it has something to do with the storm turning him human."

(Reply to this)

[info]erikbloodred
2009-07-27 12:55 am UTC (link)
"He turned human? That's... odd. Does that happen to all creatures that are not at least human in form?" Erik had never considered that the creatures he was used to would be in human form. Not that all of them could shift their appearance simply by thought alone.

(Reply to this)

[info]foughtlikeaman
2009-07-27 01:00 am UTC (link)
"So far as we can tell, yeah. Jack and Bill's ship, the Freedom, came through as human, so did the Codex. Haven't thought to ask around see what's happened to others, but it seems to be pretty common." She shrugged, "Most folk seem to not think twice about it, so I'd figure it's normal enough around here."

(Reply to this)

[info]erikbloodred
2009-07-27 01:13 am UTC (link)
"The Codex? The Codex." Erik shook his head. "That's bizarre to say the least." He shook his head. "Not surprising, simply odd. Well, if anything, you are being very enlightening about the smaller details of this world. I'm still unsure as to why so many of my kind are... shy. To say the least."

Erik wasn't used to structureless vampire society. He'd been around before it, but he'd gotten used to it.

"One and the same." She said, "Sweet kid, if a bit of a smart mouth. Not that I expected any different."

She tiled her head, thinking that one over, "Figure it's a bit like pirates and never wanting to call a council unless it's an actual emergency. Don't like dealing with each other any moren' strictly necessary."

"I like my kind just fine, when they're sociable and tolerant to change," He muttered against the lip of his glass, "This entire 'stay to my family' bullshit's been crawling up my back side and nesting there. And that is never a good thing for a situation to do." He leaned against the bar again, running his hand through his hair. "I have been trying to persuade them into a set of rules and laws that all vampires could stand by, but the day walking ones... I shouldn't throw all this on you, it's been so long."

(Reply to this)

[info]foughtlikeaman
2009-07-27 01:39 am UTC (link)
She shrugged, "Might be you need an outside opinion is all, and I can certainly try to have one of those." Another smile, reaching over to ruffle his hair, mostly just because she knew she could get away with it, once, "And besides, you've had more time to get used to the idea of being around the rest of them than the rest of them have."

(Reply to this)

[info]erikbloodred
2009-07-27 01:51 am UTC (link)
"This is a very good point. I've got New York under my jurisdiction, and that's comfortable for me. Four days, one big, happy city? That's a new record. But I don't want to look like I'm a warrior king. I want to give them safety. Living in disjointed hives like they are just won't last." He'd seen how that wound up in the middle ages, and he wasn't going to let it happen again. That was the reason they even had laws. That's how they put a vampire into papal power then. Those dark years didn't simply settle well for him, or any vampire.

"Clearly, something must be done."

(Reply to this)

[info]foughtlikeaman
2009-07-27 02:03 am UTC (link)
She thought about that one for a long while, just toying with her glass, finally shrugging, "I'd wager that most of 'em aren't old enough to know why the hives and crews and family units won't last in the long run. Hell, even I know that some places have a 'high council' that's little more than a dictatorship, led by the whims of a select few who're just older or stronger or meaner than the rest. That's probably the only kind of rule, of government most of the others here have had, if even that."

She shook her head, finishing off her drink, "Look at it this way: you're like the first guy trying to convince a bunch of cave-dwellers that fire is good. People don't like to stray away from what they know, when what they know is safe, and what they don't could kill 'em."

(Reply to this)

[info]erikbloodred
2009-07-27 02:11 am UTC (link)
"Hm, and it's only going to take time until they see that I'm not dragging any weight with what I have proposed here. I do not wish to scare them off the idea. What can be done about this is simply giving it time. Show them that New York is habitable by civilized vampires, ones who don't shy away from the rules I have come to embrace, and a safe haven. Hunters here - the human ones - won't fuck with what is a self-policing group. I'll give it a year, and propose it to them again, this time with evidence that leads them to understand that I'm not doing this for my own benefit, but for the good of others, both vampire and human alike."

He smiled then, a tiny, wry smile. "And this is why you lived for as long as you have. You're quick on your toes. Even Pam wouldn't have thought to put it that way."

(Reply to this)

[info]foughtlikeaman
2009-07-27 02:33 am UTC (link)
"There you go. Hell, with as often as things change around here, and your stellar record thus far, four days was it? You might not even need a full year, six, seven months at the most."

She shrugged, "Mostly comes from having to explain things to people who've got about the comprehension of a twelve year old and the smarts of a toddler." The smile was back, "But thanks for saying so."

She could've been talking about pirates just as easily as she could've been talking about antiques dealers.

(Reply to this)

[info]erikbloodred
2009-07-27 02:37 am UTC (link)
And she could have been talking about just about anybody and it all would have made sense to Erik. "That's why I tend to use small words, yes. That, and I simply don't have enough time to learn yet another full language. If I did that, this permutation of English will have died by the time I was through, and another one would crop up, leaving me sounding antiquated. And we mustn't have that."

He ruffled her hair and smirked. "Does the museum you work for have night hours? I would hate to be left in the dark. After all, I'm nosy and your job sounds like fun."

(Reply to this)

[info]foughtlikeaman

"'course we do." She said, "Wednesdays and Fridays." Another grin, "And if you don't like the crowds I can always give you a tour sometime that isn't a Wednesday or a Friday. Pat's fair used to me doing that by now."

(Reply to this)

[info]erikbloodred
2009-07-27 02:45 am UTC (link)
"Then I'll make a night of it, soon. The ladies have this place running well without me constantly here, and I might even be talked into trying one of those portkeys, if you're slick enough." He finished his second drink and looked over to her. "Did that pirate Bill friend of yours happen to leave you any talismans? I've heard about them, Calliope has one, as does Pam, now. I wouldn't use them except for in emergencies, but I'd rather have a small clutch of them, in case my ladies accidentally lose one."

(Reply to this)

[info]foughtlikeaman
2009-07-27 02:49 am UTC (link)
She shook her head, "Nah, I've got no use for them. He did leave me an island though, working out how to do some educational pirate tours, sort of a living history, what life was like sort of thing. That'll be a long time coming though."

(Reply to this)

[info]erikbloodred
2009-07-27 02:54 am UTC (link)
"Sounds fair. If you ever need any help with that, don't call me. I know only one pirate and I'm looking at her." Erik shrugged. "Though speaking of open waters, I'm selling my yacht. Lord only knows why I've got one to begin with, I would have far preferred a speedboat to something that can barely chug along at the speed of one of my old ships. If you have any contacts down there, feel free to send them my way." He paused for a moment, then as an afterthought, added, "I promise not to eat many of them. I make no promises on Pam's behalf."

(Reply to this)

[info]foughtlikeaman
2009-07-27 07:10 am UTC (link)
She laughed, shaking her head, "If I come across any in my contacts, I'll let you know. And honestly most of them deserve whatever's coming to them."

Another, somewhat more wry, headshake followed, "And sadly the planning is being done by committee, and the logistics are being deferred to me. Not that I mind, gives me something to do."

(Reply to this)

[info]erikbloodred
2009-07-27 07:11 am UTC (link)
"Because we all know how pirate ventures planned by committee wind up," Erik snidely joked. "At least this time, they've actually got an island to build around."

(Reply to this)

[info]foughtlikeaman
2009-07-27 07:15 am UTC (link)
She snickered at that, shrugging, "Exactly, sadly this one's not even a pirate committee, it's a ... something or other and safety committee. Kind of like what cruise lines have."

(Reply to this)

[info]erikbloodred
2009-07-27 07:19 am UTC (link)
"Lovely, I can't wait to watch the kitsch pop up out of nowhere. It'll be like Disneyland all over again. I truly hope you have more of a say in it than logistics." He could almost envision what a 21st century look back on the 17th century free ports would be. It would likely look like the colonial villages you could find anywhere, run by executives who didn't have a clue.

"Making something as interesting as a pirate village tourist-friendly would take out all of the appeal of a pirate village." He muttered.

(Reply to this)

[info]foughtlikeaman
2009-07-27 07:26 am UTC (link)
She grimaced at that, shaking her head, "Luckily Pat knows what he's doing, we keep saying he was just born too late, piracy's in his blood, somehow, haven't rightly figured out how." A shrug, "Besides, place like this we're bound to find some actual pirates who want a job, that'll help."

(Reply to this)

[info]erikbloodred
2009-07-27 07:34 am UTC (link)
"But the smells and the spontaneous brawls that encompass the entire town. That's something you won't rightly get in a facsimile. But I'm in no place to tell you how to run a fake pirate town. I'm better suited to... very different, other things." He shrugged a shoulder. "Night clubs, mostly." Of course, there was far more that he was good at, but making a fake town wasn't one of them.

"Have you seen the whole club? Or just the bar. I'm quite proud of it, even if it isn't fully mine, yet."

(Reply to this)

[info]foughtlikeaman
2009-07-27 07:39 am UTC (link)
"Yeah, there is that." She shrugged, "Like I said, it'll be a long time coming."

There was another grin at the question, "Just the bar at this point, and what I can see from here, which I figure ain't much."

"There's two whole floors you're missing." Erik said, standing and holding his hand out to her. "Let me take you on the grand tour." He still was undecided on whether or not he'd appreciate it if Pam were to see him with his old friend. He'd told Pam about Anne in passing. Always as 'my old friend, Anne,' but never which Anne she was, or if she was vampire or not.

In a way, he kind of hoped Pam would drop in and glare at Anne and then him. But from last night's little upset, he wasn't about to take his chances with further upsetting the little princess he Made.

"Two of 'em?" She asked, arching a brow, "Well then I'd better take you up on that offer." She smiled again, sliding from her seat and taking the offered hand.

She really was not as imposing as the stories made her seem, at least not at the moment, she was somewhat more imposing when she was armed and crewman's clothing.

Erik pointed out in grand fashion, the stairs, "These, are stairs," He said with a host's grand panache, "They go from floor A to floor B, to maximize our plot of land." And with that joke, he quit being very silly about any of it. "But here's the second floor. It's the dance floor, with booths on the side to sit and be intimate, but not too intimate because the owner will break it up and eat the person closest to the floor." He nodded to his seat, "That's where you'll find me most of the time, generally multitasking. And the third floor," he said, leading the way up, letting people pass as they made their way down, "Is the outdoor deck. Food is served up here, mostly barbecue things. Seating, mellow music, smoking. There's nothing about this I'd change, though downstairs, I'm planning a minor overhaul of the dance floor and booths."

"Stairs, a marginally less safe way to get from point A to point B than riggings." she said, smiling crookedly once more, as she absorbed the information, turning things around in her mind's eye to see how they'd look tidied up a bit, "It'll be nice when it's done." She said with a nod.
