Who: Mary & Star
Where: Care facility for special-needs adults and then parts beyond
When: now-ish
What: Rescue mission!
Warnings: Not likely, Mary doesn't swear and Star doesn't talk.

Star, or more accurately, the person she'd replaced, was one of the facility's few self-admitted patients, even so the staff was somewhat surprised to find her packed up and ready to go, waiting in the lobby, leafing through a copy of Popular Mechanics, which she apparently had a subscription to.

Everything she'd deemed important all fit into a single duffel, which was currently on the floor between her feet. She was mostly keeping tabs on what was going on around her, people seemed to forget that just because she didn't talk, didn't mean she couldn't hear.

Mary looked every inch the mother, dressed in jeans and a pale pink button-down shirt. Her flip flops sounded loudly against the tile of the floor as she walked toward the lobby. When she saw Star, she grinned and waved, moving over to her and giving her a quick hug.

"Hi! You really do look pretty today. Do you need help with your bags?"

Star smiled as well, though it was more surprise than anything, returning the hug in the same vein, puzzled, totally out of her depth, and hoping that this wasn't all in her mind.

She shook her head at the question, tucking the magazine into a pocket of the duffel and picking it up, nodding towards the counter.

Moving to the counter, Mary smiled at the clerk. "Hi, I'm helping my sister-in-law with checking out and getting settled? Is there any paperwork she'll need to fill out?" She didn't step in because Star couldn't do it herself, she did it because she didn't know how the clerk would treat her new friend. Turning, she moved her back to the counter where she knew the clerk wouldn't see her face, and rolled her eyes.

The clerk shook his head, pulling her file up on the computer so he knew which drawer to get the actual folder out of, "Nope, she checked herself in about a year ago, all we'll need is an address so we can have any mail forwarded. That's this one here." He said, shuffling through the forms and pulling one out to place it on top.

For her part, Star stood by, head tilted, just watching this exchange, fingers drumming against the strap of her bag, trying to figure out if there was any way to tell for sure and without going on a killing spree if this was all a simulation or not.

Mary quickly filled out the form with her own address, smiling sweetly and handing it back over. "Thanks a lot for your help. I appreciate you guys taking care of her." She gave a little wave before smiling back at Star and walking toward the exit. Pulling two pairs of sunglasses out of her purse, Mary handed one over to Star. "If you haven't been outside in a while, it's really bright with the lights and things. You might not need them, but I figured I should just in case." She handed over the other pair, smiling. "I don't know your tastes, so whichever you like better."

She had a pair of her own, in fact, she had two pair, but they were at the bottom of the bag, she was used to desert-brightness with no sunglasses and sometimes just safety goggles. She did, however, take one of the offered pairs, slipping them on before signing a 'thanks' fingertips tapping her chin before dropping her hand down in a low arc, palm up.

She tugged a small spiral-bound notepad out of her pocket, along with a clicky pen, writing down: Portkey? in tidy block letters

"You're welcome," she smiled. Looking over at Star's message, she nodded. "Mmhmm, there's one not too far from here." She put her hands in her pockets as they walked. "I don't know if this sounds any less crazy now that you're outside and walking around, but they're just normal everyday things that have magic. The magic takes you where you want to go. It's usually things that nobody would look at twice, so you have to make sure you're familiar with what portkey is where."

She just nodded at that, brow still creased slightly. Mostly it was a case of she didn't know what to believe, and she was just waiting for some sign that this was all a Skynet trick and she was being tested for some reason.

She was keeping close enough to Mary that she didn't lose the other woman, but still far enough away that she could make a run for it if she had to, and was keeping tabs on her surroundings both with furtive sideways glances and with full movements of her head.

Star's jumpiness was obvious and rolled off of her. Mary was careful to make her movements slowly, to point out things that might have changed between the future and the past, but always with an apology in case Star already knew.

When they reached the trash can, Mary smiled. "Well, where would you like to go? I live in New York, but I would understand if you didn't totally trust me yet."

Most landmarks and things were from farther north than Star had been, so she was thankful for that at least, most everything else was different, and her brow just kept furrowing more and more deeply as she tried to take everything in. She was going to have a headache and she knew it.

She arched a brow at the trash can, but shrugged in response, she could already tell that anywhere she knew by name wouldn't be home and she wasn't sure she was ready for that. Actually, she was sure she wasn't ready for that, so she shrugged again, if Mary trusted her, she'd trust the other woman.

Smiling, Mary took Star's hand lightly in her own and tapped the trash can. She was glad when they were taken to an alley in New York, but immediately turned her focus to Star. "A lot of people feel dizzy or even nauseated the first time they do that. We can stay here for a little while until you feel better. I've got some ginger ale up in my apartment, too. You're not allergic to cats, are you?"

Star reeled once they landed, one arm tightening across her stomach, holding onto the strap of her bag more tightly, that was worse than motion sickness because it happened all at once.

She shook her head, taking a few deep breaths to steady herself once more, she looked just a little startled at the mention of cats, but then she processed the fact that they'd be domesticated ones, and not ferals born of ferals.

Her hand moved to Star's back, stroking lightly and gently patting. "Ginger ale will do you some good, anyway. I'm on the tenth floor, so a little bit of an elevator ride, too. Or we can take the stairs, if you'd prefer." If machines went bad in the future, Mary would understand not wanting to be inside of one for very long.

Her apartment building wasn't too far off, maybe three blocks or so, and Mary was soon holding the door open for Star.

She'd find a way to explain about Skynet and Cyberdine and the robotic uprising of the late nineties everything, but even after the walk she was still feeling a little dizzy, though she suspected it was more a case of everything starting to sink in than it was from the portkey ride.

She clicked her fingers, pointing to the elevator, the less walking the better at the moment

Mary nodded and pressed the up button, smiling when the doors slid open right away. Mary had a lot to be happy about - new friends always pleased her, and so did helping a new person get settled.

She hit the button for the tenth floor, then led Star down the hall to her apartment. It was fairly empty, Lucifer having likely taken the kids somewhere, and Mary leaned down to pick up a glossy tabby that had brushed against her legs. "Just lock the door after you, if you don't mind." She grinned and went to the fridge to get a ginger ale for star, popping the can open and pouring it into a glass. "Here you go."

She was wary of the cats, but only for a moment, locking the door easily and following the other woman, just leaning against the counter and nodding her thanks for the drink, tilting her head to watch the bubbles. There was a squeak of surprise at the first sip, setting the glass down quickly before she could drop it, and rubbing her nose vigorously.

Clearly they didn't have fizzy drinks in the not-so-distant future.

It was hard not to laugh, and Mary covered her mouth. "I'm sorry! I didn't know you guys didn't have carbonation!" The cats were well behaved, more like moving piles of fur than anything else, and Mary started to dice up an apple, figuring it might to Star good as well.

It was only a moment before Star was laughing too, shaking her head and rubbing her nose once more before trying another sip, it wasn't quite as startling now that she knew what to expect.

Sometimes they still found soda in people's stores, but it was a rarity, and even then most of it had gone flat or fermented by that time. She tilted her head, pointing at the apple in question. They had root vegetables where she was from, potatoes, carrots, plants that could be hidden. Trees, not so much.

"They don't have apples in the future? That's sad. It's a fruit," she smiled, taking one of the slices and popping it into her mouth. "It's sweet, sort of like your drink, but a lot better for you. More vitamins. I didn't know if you were hungry or not."

She nodded at that, making the sign of a tree, and then blowing it up. She shrugged then, it was rather self-explanatory as far as she was concerned, she did, however, nibble at a slice of it, grinning a moment later and dipping it in her ginger ale before taking another bite.

Mary smiled and nodded. "Mmmhmm, there's some apple orchards upstate that are fun to go to. I took the kids there a while ago to pick some and make some into juice, we all had fun." She went to cut one up for herself and got out some peanut butter, dipping the apples into it before munching them. She pushed the jar over for Star, smiling. "You probably didn't have peanuts, either. I don't know why the tornado vortex thing brings people here, but sometimes, I think it's a better place. Like a reward." She shrugged a little. "I don't like the idea of you or anyone else being in your future. It sounds terrible."

She just nodded at that assessment, it was terrible, even with little else to compare it too besides the oldsters memories.

She beamed at the peanut butter, scooping out enough to give each of her apple slices a thin layer, she was used to having to make things last, probably not a habit she'd get over anytime soon.

Humming a little as she ate, Mary smiled contentedly. "Best snack ever, really." She motioned Star over to the living room so they could sit down on the couch.

She smiled at that, nodding and picking up her glass and following, she'd left her duffel by the door to keep it out of the way but still within easy reach if she needed it.

She held a hand down tentatively for one of the cats, not sure how it would react to her, but she beamed a moment later when it rubbed against her fingers.

"They're all really tame. Someone abandoned them when they were kittens, and I was feeding them. They started following me around whenever I went outside, so I adopted them." Mary didn't know if they had Christianity in the future, but Mary was being very sure to not mention Lucifer. It took people a while to understand that he was good, and Mary didn't want to scare Star. "They've been with me since they were about seven months old."
