James was lounging in front of a television, bored out of his mind and not really paying attention to the pictures that were flashing in front of his eyes. Anyone who knew him well could tell that he'd been restless ever since the new Padfoot had appeared.

He wasn't avoiding Padfoot, exactly, he was just giving his mates some time to themselves. The inactivity and not knowing what was going on made him grumpy and left him to think far too much. James tossed the remote control to the side, not too hard to break it but rough enough to make a sound, and then he rose to his feet. He decided he'd go for a walk somewhere.

Sirius hadn't slept much the night before. He knew it would've been polite to let James know he was on his way, but he didn't have an owl yet and his internet thing was broken. James'd be expecting him, though, Sirius figured. He couldn't stay away for long.

It had been weeks since he'd seen Prongs properly, with him and Lily being in hiding. Part of him didn't even believe that James would be on the other side of the door he was about to knock on. Some stranger would open the door and he would realize that it was impossible to actually find the address written on the piece of paper he had. Well, there was one way to find out. He knocked on the door.

"Oi, Bree." James poked his head in her room and caught her in the middle of a book. Sometimes he wondered about this girl and if she wasn't really Moony's secret love child from another universe. He smiled at her when she glanced up. "I'll be back in a tick, yeah? Might even bring you back a surprise." Fatherhood, or unclehood, sat well on James.

With a little wave, he went to the door and started when he heard the knock. He frowned a little, because he hadn't been expecting anyone and figured that his mates would just show up inside the flat. Maybe Lily was expecting post. James opened the door and looked a little surprised to find Sirius standing there, looking older. "Padfoot," he said. "Hi."

Sirius grinned brightly when the door opened and it was James. He rushed forward to hug his friend tightly. Even as he was greeting his friend, he was brainstorming amusing ways to take advantage of James' lack of glasses. Horrible habit, that.

"Good to see you, Prongs." He knew that James had told him that there wasn't a threat here, but it didn't feel real until he'd seen him with his own eyes.

James' surprise and any anxiety he might have felt melted away when Padfoot surged forward. Suddenly, he was playfully laughing and pushing his mate back in order to give him a proper (and light) headbutt. "I was wondering when you'd fucking get here. Been pacing for hours. Driving my lady mad." He exaggerated a little.

"Y'look..." James inspected, "fucking old." He grinned a wide grin.

Here was some weirdness. It was odd for James to have to explain, yet again, that he wore contacts. The thought sobered him just a little, bringing his thousand watt grin down to a normal smile. "I can see fine." He pointed at his eyes, "Muggle magic." He didn't really enjoy touching his eye and pulling out a contact, but he could if Padfoot didn't believe him. "And I gotta be up sometimes. I have to take Bree to school."

There was a lot he figured he'd have to explain, but James didn't much fancy having to get to all of it. He much preferred playing and roughing around. He and Sirius - the older young Sirius - hadn't been playful lately and he'd been missing it.

Sirius shrugged, accepting the 'muggle magic' bit. It was some ridiculously future year.. Two-million-nine or something. James probably had tiny robots living in his eyes or something. It probably said something that Sirius didn't find eyeball-robots terribly interesting.

"What's a Bree? Cheese or something, yeah? Are you taking cooking classes?" That seemed weird. He couldn't imagine Prongs cooking.

Sirius shouldered James, pushing him further into the room.

James mumbled a quick spell, closing the door behind them with a quiet slam. "Bree is the little girl that lives with Lily and me. She's a teenager. And she's kind of... all of ours. We're all her uncles." He pushed Padfoot back, but stumbled backwards. The way they were going, they'd either end up on tangled on the floor or flopping on the couch. "I'm not taking cooking classes. I can't fucking cook, you know that." Unless Sirius was from some weird alternate universe in which everything was very similar, save for the fact that James could cook. It spoke a lot to the fact that James had been here too long that this possibility came to him.

He raised an eyebrow. Prongs was calling him old when he had a teenager? "A teenager? She.. what? But no Harry. Where'd she come from? Uncles? I'm going to have to meet her, you know." This list of things he had to catch up on was getting pretty long. Still, he was having fun.

He grinned, nudging James back with his elbow. "That's why I thought it was weird. Was gonna make fun of you."

"No Harry," James said, shaking his head. "He's been here before... also as a teenager, but he disappeared." The smile disappeared. Until he pushed Sirius again. "And as for Bree... she came from... well, she used to stay with Remus - the older Remus. But he disappeared, too. And there's a lot more complicated shit that I don't really need to explain. Basically, she's living with us because she likes us and we like her and she deserves a home. She's not related to us biologically, but she's ours. And she's inside if you wanna meet her. She's a lot like Moony. Reads all the time, is a good student. S'weird."

Sirius was distracted by actually listening (or trying to) and stumbled backward when he was pushed. "So. Huh. A mini-Moony? Neat." He shoved James, still half-distracted. The idea of a girl Moony was interesting, especially after what Moony told him last night. Not that Sirius was interested in teenagers. Okay, not that Sirius would act on being interested in teenagers. Especially not James' niece-daughter-person.

"Was just getting used to the idea of you having an infant, mate. You're trying to blow up my brain, aren't you?" He rammed his shoulder into James' chest. "Yeah, sure, I'll meet her."

James laughed. Out of all the things he could have told Padfoot, Bree was probably the least brain breaking. "It's not that weird," he said, simply, hoping that that didn't sound as cryptic as it could have. "She's in her room." James pointed in that direction. Before heading that way, though, he looked curiously at Sirius. "You have to tell me what it's like where you're from, mate."

Padfoot started toward the girl's room, then paused and turned around when James asked about what it had been like. Wasn't exactly something he could discuss in front of a little girl. "It was.. Dark. All this 'pure blood' shit, 'Death Eaters', people doing.. Just evil shit. Lots of people died or were driven mad.. They're using the forbidden curses. It's mad." He was switching back and forth between tenses, not quite used to being 'safe' now. "We found out they were after you and yours, so you had to go into hiding. I didn't even know where you've been. Haven't seen you in ages. Been out trying to learn more and fight the bastards back."

	James nodded, solemn. "Sorry," he said after an awkward pause. Really, he didn't know what else to say. It was shitty. James knew his future and very little good seemed to come of it. "Yeah," Sirius said, nodding. "I'm getting that." It might take a while to sink in, but already things seemed brighter.

He knocked on the door, feeling a bit of the same trepidation he'd felt when he thought some stranger, alien, or perhaps a man-eating plant monster would answer the door instead of James. Instead, a short, dark-haired girl opened the door, a finger holding the place in her book.

Bree looked up at Sirius, recognizing the new face without any introduction. She smiled up at him. "Hullo," she said. She decided it would be a little odd if she were to give him a big hug, since he didn't really know her yet. It had been a while since Sirius had spent much time visiting, though, so she was glad he was back, and Uncle James seemed happy about it. "I'm Bree."

"You're loud," she said to James, sticking her tongue out at him briefly. "I'm surprised neither of you has a bloody nose."

Padfoot grinned. "She is just like Moony," he said, amused at being scolded by a little girl.

James, about as mature as Bree, quickly stuck his tongue back out at her. "We'll keep it down so we don't disturb your book," he said petulantly. James was more than a little tempted to pick Bree up and toss her over his shoulder, but that could wait. He figured they'd all be able to play together once Sirius was more acquainted with the girl. "Yup," he said to Sirius, "Just like Moony."

Padfoot was quickly growing accustomed to the munchkin, and reached out to ruffle her hair. He'd figured James'd be a good dad. Clearly, this girl proved that Sirius Black was right. He liked things that proved him right. "A bit shorter, though," he said, grinning. "Just a bit."

Bree grinned up at Sirius when he compared her to Uncle Remus. He'd always been her favorite in the books. Any nervousness over having a new Sirius seemed to be gone. She swatted a little at his hand mussing her hair, but didn't really seem perturbed by it. She looked back at James, putting her hands on her hips. "Take it outside, boys," she said in her best Lily voice.
