Who: Rose Frost and Gar Logan
What: Surprise date night gone horribly awry!
Where: Chez Frost
Warnings: We'll keep you posted.

Gar was technically involved in a long distance relationship. It was pretty easy to do so. The fact that there was publicly available teleportation may have had something to do with that. Besides, if it became difficult to deal with, Gar would move to England, and that would be that.

After recovering from the Portkey, Gar grew a pair of wings and took to the air. The path to Die Frostenhausen was so easy to navigate that his brain practically disconnected as he flew, tapping into the strange zen that most people associate with long drives. Strangely, he never really felt that way during long drives himself. Gar was a bundle of conflicting animal instincts, and most of them had objections to being in enclosed spaces. It wasn't overpowering, but it was enough to keep him focused on the road.

He approached the house from the west, and Rose's curtain was open, which meant she was decent. Gar might have been less concerned with her privacy if they hadn't been dating; he once got an accidental full-frontal view of Flamebird when visiting her window which he'd apologized for through a very wide smile. But dating meant Rules, and Rules meant not ogling your girlfriend when she wasn't aware of it. He landed outside the window and knocked with his beak.

Rose thoroughly ignored his grammar lecture and cocked a brow in his direction. "And what will you be teaching me? I'm not so confident that you're very knowledgeable when it comes to the art of sex." Not that she had any room to talk, really. They were both painfully aware of her virginity. Still, she liked to talk big. "And you're not going to distract me."

Without another word, Rose turned and went to her desk. She sat and found the pencil she'd been writing with. "You should go home," she said, not at all meaning it.

"You would be confident if you were more naked." Like Rose, Gar generally talked a bigger game than he played. He was willing to wait as long as she was without pressuring her, but there was a difference between pressuring and joking or mock- (or less-than-mock-) begging.

"I probably should go. But hell, it's thousands of miles away. If I go now, I'll get jet lag." It was objectively false, but Gar didn't really care. "Besides, I'd rather do nothing at all with you than anything with anyone else."

"Mmm," Rose murmured from her place, sarcasm dripping off of her words as she read a problem to herself, "I'm sure I would be." Gar hadn't yet seen her completely naked and Rose had no intention of that changing anytime yet. It was strange, the way she worked. She had told him that she loved him and she was always very tempted to go all the way, but part of her always held back. She was always, in the heat of the moment, telling him to stop. Part of it was because she liked playing this game.

"So you're just going to sit there and watch me do work?" She asked, smiling a little at the thought of that. Gar liked her and she liked being reminded of this as often as possible. Rose grew silent for a few minutes as she scribbled something onto the page in front of her and then she turned, "Why are you here?"

"Well, if you have any biology needs doing, I might help. I've been basically everything that has a biology, including no small amount of things that're either weird or extinct, so I know all there is to really know." As if to prove this, he shapeshifted into a form with which he was becoming disturbingly comfortable.

His head ("her" head was an inappropriate term, no matter the gender of the body he inhabited at any given time) was hanging off the edge of the bed as he spoke in what was very nearly Rose's voice. "I'm also really good with chemistry, but you'd know that, wouldn't you?" There was little chance of him ever being mistaken for Rose, even putting aside the skin color. Rose was aloof most of the time, with a slightly icy tone to her voice that waxed and waned. On the other hand, Gar said everything as if it were the punchline to the funniest joke in the world. It was probably a bit disconcerting to hear her voice with his inflections.

Rose sighed quietly when she heard her own voice speak at her. "Must you?" She asked, shaking her head lightly. Rose was quite fond of Gar's power... when he was using it to turn into cute animals. When he was looking like Rose, or people she liked, she wasn't so keen on his shifting ability. It was just a little too strange for her.

Glancing back, she tisked, "And close your legs when you look like me, won't you?"

"I must. One of the truly tragic things about being me is that yes, yes, I always must." Gar obeyed, closing his legs. He was wearing pants, so it must have been a lady-like thing. Rose was a strange mix of tomboy and girly girl, so she probably had to listen to a lot of that growing up.

Gar decided to continue on his mission to distract Rose and turned into a kitten. Then he wandered over to her curtain, found the string for the blinds, and jumped at it. For maximum effected, he added a "mrowr!" noise when he pounced.

Rose sighed heavily. "I don't know why I'm dating yo-" She stopped when he turned into a kitty and started to play with string. That had something to do with why she was with him. It was fun to have a boyfriend who doubled as a pet. Rolling her eyes, she leaned back and turned the chair slightly so she could watch him be adorable.

After a minute, she said, "It's not going to work." She sounded far too sure of herself, painfully smug. Turning, she went back to her work, only watching Gar out of the corner of her eye.

"Uh-huh." It wasn't just the shape that he got into, it was the mind. He was actually enjoying his string pouncing. The instincts never overpowered him, but they were always there, telling him to attack the string, attack the string, get that fucking string! A moment passed before he remembered that his actual goal had been to distract Rose from homework.

With that in mind, he walked over to her desk, jumped onto her lap, and then onto the desk itself. He crossed over her math book and turned around, reading her homework upside-down. Licking his feline lips, he pointed at a problem on the page with his paw. "That one's seven. Write it down, seven."

"That one," Rose said, almost mechanically, "is not seven." She spared Gar the shortest glance she could while he was in that shape, trying not to let the kitty in him soften her resolve. She had a very Serious Face on and she told herself to not crack. Whether she would actually manage this or not was questionable. After that, she checked the question he'd pointed to and wrote down the correct answer.

Absently, she moved to the next question and reached out to scratch Gar behind a tiny ear.

"Could've been. I wasn't looking." As his innumerable private tutors could relate, he had not been much of a student. High school had been spent chasing down supervillains; he'd never had much time for trigonometry. Or geometry. Or geography. He'd made time for human anatomy, though. Or at least female anatomy. "At least one of the answers in this book must be seven. It's a big book."

Once Rose started scratching his ear, he leaned into her hand almost on reflex. Then he started purring. It was one of the stranger abilities he had a shapeshifter, since the only use for it was that people liked to hear it, but it worked for him.

Rose was quite used to Gar's purring. He tended to do it often around her, especially when, in a cat-shape, he curled up on her chest and made himself at home. "Before college... did you even go to school?" Rose asked suddenly, realizing that she didn't really know. She was aware of the fact that Gar was a television actor at a young age and knew that that didn't usually lend itself to regular schooling. "Back in your world, I mean," she said, glancing up at him before turning her attention back to her homework.

She grudgingly admitted to herself that she probably wasn't going to get much more work done with him there. It took her three tries to read the newest question and have it sink in.

"Not a lot of it. I was home-schooled when I was a kid, since we lived in Africa and Oprah hadn't shown up yet. My folks died and I came over to the states. I did some studying with the Doom Patrol, but not a lot. Then when they died, I did the acting thing and had tutors. After Steve came back from being crazy, he put me in high school for a few months, but it didn't take. Then more tutors." Gar was one of the few superheroes to both lack a secret identity and try to pursue a normal life. It didn't always work.

"I took a few college classes in San Francisco before popping up in NYU. Gotta tell you, lucky I'm rich. Big money, NYU. And Tisch is just full of douchebags."

"So you fit right in, hm?" Rose didn't miss a beat. She smirked, met his eyes, and then looked back down at the page. "When you were there, what were you like in school?" She asked, not sure how she might picture a teenaged Gar. She could see him being wildly unpopular, awkward and gangly and desperately trying to find himself a girlfriend. She could just barely imagine him quieter and less sure, but that image was hard to hold.

"Like I am now, only moreso. I've never been much for normality." When he said that, the kitty became a bunny, and he twitched his nose. "I mean, I've been an actor (in a terribly underrated show), a Doom Patroller and a Titan basically since I've lived in America. Also, I'm green. I barely remember a time in my life where I wasn't green."

Gar thought about his high school days, stroking his whiskers thoughtfully. "I don't think I was too popular. I mean, it seems cool, having a superhero in your class, but then I have to run and go defeat Trigon the Terrible. Might say it disrupts class."

"I never even entertained the thought of you being cool," Rose said, a small smile curling her lips. She sighed quietly as she pushed her book aside and laid her head down on the table, resting the side of her face against her arm. "I'm tired of math," she said, as though that would somehow keep Gar from being smug about the attention she was now giving him. As if the fact that he'd shifted into a bunny, her favorite, hadn't influenced her into putting aside her work in the least.

Slowly, she pet Gar and was surprised, even after all this time, by how soft he was. Not for the first time, she considered buying herself a pet.

"I'll have you know that I am extremely cool. One." He held up one little paw. "I am a superhero, and an extraordinarily handsome one at that. Two." He held up his other front paw. "I am an actor, and an extraordinarily handsome one at that. Three." He paused, then lowered one ear so that he had only one standing up. "I'm dating you, which obviously means I'm super cool." The sarcasm was so heavy that it should have hit the floor when Gar spoke. "And four." He raised the other ear. "I'm extraordinarily handsome."

It occurred to him that if he were to start dancing right now, it would make an awesome YouTube video. Or at the very least, a good post on Cute Overload. "So since you're done with your math," he said, carefully avoiding the reason why she was done with math, "how about I take you away from all of this?"
