Who: Tobias and Rachel
What: Reunions, over dinner
When/Where: Tonight, starting in Rachel's apartment in NYC, then on the town
Warnings: Cuteness? Probably nothing too bad, with the giant age gap XD

It took Tobias a while, after hopping a portkey and morphing to take flight, to remember his way to Rachel's old apartment. She hadn't lived there for years, after all. But once he saw the neighborhood, he found his way easily enough, fluttering down to land on the fire escape. It was too cold to morph outside, so he let himself through the window, before changing back.

"Rach? It's me." A beat, "Uh, Tobias," He realized she wouldn't recognize his voice, of course. God, this was going to be weird. But it wasn't like he could stay away.

It was a voice she was not expecting. This was weird, even for them, and that was saying something since he spent most of his time as a hawk and since she was dead and all. Or had been dead, anyway. She was a lot less dead now, which was pretty weird in itself.

"In here." Rachel called to the unfamiliar voice. She would just have to get used to this, it was still Tobias, no matter what.

He couldn't help the slight hitch of breath when he heard her- God, she was young- and he ran a hand through his hair as he moved through the apartment towards her voice.

He stopped when he saw her, smile threatening to break his face.

"I- hey," He didn't move toward her yet, knowing this was strange even by their standards. She'd be well within her bounds to be freaked out, but an 'old' man in her apartment.

It was a little jarring to see Tobias at that age, but she could accept it. You learned to accept a lot of things when the boy you loved was primarily a hawk. She was back from the dead and for some still unknown reason Tobias had aged a good deal.

It didn't matter much though, he was still Tobias. "Hey." She returned his smile.

The slight pause before the smile made him pause, before remember just how long Jake had said they'd been around. Right.

"Uh, funny story, actually. When I fell asleep last night, it was June 2019. Woke up this morning- in Central Park- in 2009. Things like that... happen here. Especially in our line of work." He shrugged a shoulder slightly, scoffing a little laugh.

"How've you been? Jake said we haven't... been here very long."

"It's 2009?" Rachel asked in surprise, she guessed that she'd never really asked before what the year was since she'd gotten here.

"I've been...okay." Rachel said, moving towards him. "Pretty great til I found out David was here, and definitely better now that you're here." She smiled at him. He had grown up to be pretty damn attractive, at least she thought so.

"2009, yeah. From what I hear, those ten years weren't really that important, though. Don't worry about it." He closed the space between them and wrapped his arms around her; it was strange, after so long, for her to still be so small. He wasn't much taller, but he had grown broader, as men tend to do, and he felt gigantic hugging her.

"Don't worry about David. It works out in the end. He's not going to bother you," He spoke with certainty, even though he knew that even just his being back in this timeline disrupted the course of events. He wouldn't ruin the idea behind it- he didn't see the point in ruining the idea.

2009. She was pretty baffled by that. It had been a long time since she'd died, and now she was alive again. She had a lot of catching up to do, but that could wait. For now the only thing she wanted to catch up on was Tobias.

She hugged him tightly, it was like everything was perfect in that moment, though it was pretty far from it. Her smile grew, even as the name David was mentioned. She was glad that he didn't bother them. She didn't want to have to be faced with what to do with him again.

Any thoughts of David or what to do would be dismissed though. Right now she was just going to spend some time with Tobias.

Tobias just held her for a long minute, chin resting in her hair, enjoying the moment. He remembered what it was like, right after the war- how depressed he'd been, the anger at Jake. But that was half his life ago- he wouldn't say he was past it, but things were better, at least. Her just being here was proof of that.

After a minute, he laughed softly and stepped back, hands still gently on her waist. "C'mon, I promised you dinner. And unless you want to suffer something incredibly awful out of a can, we should head out before the restaurants fill up."

"We should head out." Rachel agreed. They had plenty of time to catch up with him at dinner and after as well. "At some point we should do something with Marco and Jake." For old times sake. She had missed them all. And now she had a second chance at life, it was incredible, really.

"But I'll get a coat and then we can go." New York was cold. A little too cold for Rachel's taste.

"Yeah- Marco's taking care of some things, and Jake is still laughing at the two of us, but we'll tie him up and drag him somewhere, for old time's sake." He was still in his clothes from before his morph, not having to bother with getting anything

Not that any of his things would be at her place yet. Right. He just shook his head.

"What d'you have a taste for? I had been out of the city for a while, before this... could go for... pretty much anything," His tone sounded a little chagrined, but he tried to play it off. By 'out of the city', he meant on surveilance. Living like a hawk again, for X-Factor, which she had no reason to know, and for that he was thankful. It was always a point of contention between them, before.

"Taking care of what?" Rachel had to inquire. She wasn't sure what kind of trouble Marco could be getting into. They were constantly in trouble before but she was hoping to avoid that as much as possible now that they all had a fresh start.

"I think I'd like Italian tonight." Rachel told him. She had stuff in the fridge in case he wanted to stay here for dinner, but it would be really nice for them to go out. People might look at them a little strangely but...it was okay, Rachel didn't really care that much.

"Is that cool with you?"

There was a light laugh at her question, one hand making its way through Tobias' hair. "Some... domestic troubles," Realizing just how unbelievable that would have sounded at 16, he elaborated. "His wife made the jump back with us, from the future, and she's... pregnant. Obviously, he's confused. He's sitting down with her to try and work that out."

Her choice of Italian made him smile, and he nodded, taking the coat from her to hold it out so she could slip into it. "That's fine. I know just the place, a few blocks from here. I'm assuming we're walking?" He didn't remember them ever having a car, and wasn't sure if she wanted to bother with flying, if it was only a few blocks away.

Rachel just shook her head, it was hard to imagine Marco with a wife, let alone a pregnant one. Rachel was happy for him though, that he'd finally settled down with someone. It was nice. She wondered what Jake was up to, if he had anyone special in his life, maybe she'd have to ask him later. Or maybe Tobias would tell her about it.

She slipped into the coat. "Of course we are." Rachel said. It wasn't too cold to walk, really. She didn't have a car, maybe she'd get one at some point but it wasn't high on her list.

"You know, that's what I said, but then... it made sense at the time. Ceridwen is.. well, she remids me of you, actually." And that wasn't something he really liked admitting to, obvious by the way he just brushed right past the idea, onto dinner.

"Alright. It's not far- I just have to remember my way around," That just made him smile, as he moved to the door to hold it open for her.

Rachel grinned, Tobias could be quite the gentleman when he wanted to. She suspected that Marco would make fun of him if he saw this, and she knew that Jake would.

"So what do you feel like having?" Rachel asked him. "I think I want spaghetti."

So he was a sap- there was actually a lot less of a joke made about it than Rachel assumed. Then again, she hadn't been there to see what a wreck the three of them had been without her, so she probably wouldn't understand why Jake and Marco just looked the other way, when Tobias started coddling her. It was better than his alternative.

Closing the door behind himself, he moved to let her lock it before heading down the hall, hands stuffed in his pockets. "I never really know before I get there, honestly. The chef likes to mix up the menu, always something new to try," It was sort of ironic, that the man that spent half his time eating roadkill actually had a pretty well-defined palate as a human, but there it was.

Rachel hadn't been there to see how any of them were after she died, but she didn't think it would be handled too well. She died bravely, and to her that was sort of what was important. She would rather have lived of course, but she died fighting for what she believed in, and that was enough for her. But now here she was, alive again and it wasn't a second chance that she planned on wasting.

She'd changed a lot. She wasn't as reckless or eager for war as she was then. She was a different person now. She suspected that they all were. It was strange though, still being 16 and Tobias being well...however old he was now. "I guess after awhile of eating well...what a bird would eat you need some variety to spice up your life." Rachel offered as they walked out of the building.

Her comment earned a chuckle. "Hey, and yet I can still eat sushi. I'm versatile, like that." He gave her a lopsided grin at that- something that probably looked out of place on his face, but he'd grown a lot more laid back about his reality since joining X-Factor.

Once they were on the street, he pointed them in the right direction, sticking close to her as they weaved through the crowded sidewalk. He still wasn't terribly fond of walking- claustrophobic, for obvious reasons- but if she stayed close, he wouldn't have a problem.

She grinned back at him, this would be a good night, just the two of them. And who cared what anyone else thought? Of course they probably wouldn't act like they were together when they were out, but it was sort of hard to hide. After all they'd been through...Rachel just really wanted to be with him, no matter how much older than her he now was.

"So, have you looked into who you are here, yet?" It was just for smalltalk, something to keep his attention on her while they walked. Not that he needed help, but it was better than the awkward silence of him just watching her. Especially considering one hand slid from his pocket, to reach for hers. So people would think he was a creepy old man. He'd dealt with worse.

"Who I am here?" Rachel was confused by that. Wasn't she just Rachel Berenson? She didn't know what that was really supposed to mean, but then this place was really strange, wasn't it? Why wouldn't you be someone else here? His hand felt good in hers and she didn't care what anyone else thought about them at the moment.

He just smiled a little at that. "I'll take it that's a no. I don't remember much about the school you went to, but I remembered you liked it. You have an alternate identity here, that the vortex assigns you. You're still you, but it sets you up with the house, a bank account, that kind of thing, under another name. At the risk of ruining the surprise? You're not bad-off," They paused at a stoplight to let the traffic whiz by, and Tobias' other wrist came into view for just a second, to let him check the time. He knew he was nowhere near two hours, but old habits died hard.

"So am I a celebrity or something?" Rachel asked him curiously as they walked. She caught him checking his watch, and she knew what it meant. It couldn't be time yet though, right? They'd only been reunited. She tried to hide that she was anxious about it, shaking it off for the moment. "And what about you?" She asked him. "Who are you here?" Anything to take her mind off the fact that they couldn't be together for very long. The universe was fundamentally unfair.

Her first question just earned a chuckle, and a light squeeze to her hand. "Hey, not my story to tell. As for me, well..." He shrugged, looking around the city.

"I get motivated to try that whole 'living in civilization' thing again. There's an agency here, made up of comic book mutants and superheroes," He turned to give her a 'no, really' look, before continuing. "That I went to stay with when I first started out. We ended up helping them with... a small incident with some Andalites. And Jamie offered to let me stay on." He shrugged, really hoping that would be left where it was. "I help out mutants when they arrive, handle the occasional aliens, that kind of thing. Not bad for a guy that never got a high school diploma."

Comic mutants and superheroes? Was it really so unbelievable with all they'd been through? Rachel just sort of nodded, accepting what he was saying. She listened to his story and sort of got the idea that he didn't really tell more of it. There was likely a reason why and Rachel would not pry. Not now anyway, save that for another time. She was just thrilled to be reunited with him.
