Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:ennis del mar, trindle thropp

Who: Ennis del Mar and Trindle Thropp
What: Ennis is getting his drink on. Trindle is supervising.
Where: Utah!
When: Monday night, lateish
Warnings: Possibly some sort of cussing? Sad cowboys.

She'd fished out some money to pick up a bottle of firewhisky and then headed over to the ranch, just as she'd promised. Trindle had bundled herself up just in case Ennis decided that he wanted to take a foray out of the house and into the middle of the damned wilderness - it was something she'd do if she were upset. After making sure that she was in her right sorts, she lifted her hand and knocked hard.

Hopefully Ennis hadn't started drinking without her.

He did in fact have a bottle in his hand when he opened the door. He'd drank a beer nearly straight down. Beer did little for his need to get drunk, though, so it didn't quite qualify as getting a head start.

He said nothing, but stepped outside, pulling the door shut behind him, shutting out the world behind the door. He walked forward, almost skipping the steps off the porch into the yard. He didn't look back, but assumed she'd follow.

She did follow. Suddenly the extra layers were proving an excellent idea. Trindle understood his need to be silent - she hadn't talked much when she was young, and her father had never talked much at all.

She kept the bottle in hand. She had picked up two shot glasses, but she doubted they would end up using them.

No, the glasses likely wouldn't be used. Ennis was more inclined to drink straight out of a bottle. Or a canteen, whatever was on hand.

He walked to the stable, and gestured at one of the horses. "'S a calm one, if'n y'want t'ride." He went to Maverick's stall, the horse whinnying and nudging his hand for a sugar cube, snorting when he didn't have one.

Trindle rubbed her hand over the horse's muzzle once she stepped close enough and glanced to Ennis.

"If you want to ride out somewhere, I'm good enough on a horse." In fact, her father had taken her out now and again when there had been time for it.

Ennis nodded. He didn't bother with a saddle, but hauled himself up on Maverick's bare back. "Name's Lucky."

Maverick stomped his hooves before prancing out of the stall. Ennis guided him around and over to Lucky's stall. "Y'need help a'all?"

She'd already gotten herself up onto the horse by the time Ennis guided himself over.

"I'll be all right." Trindle smiled, giving Lucky's mane a rub.

Ennis clicked his tongue, and steered Maverick toward the door. He trusted Trindle, and Lucky, to follow. Clearing the door, he looked up at the sky, and kept Maverick back to let Lucky walk next to him.

"Ain't much in this world c'n rattle me like 'at."

"Everyone has their triggers," she admitted as she brushed her hand through her own hair.

"Hearing about something like that ... it would rattle me too. As much as you look like my father, you act like my papa. He's quiet too."

Ennis nodded. He glanced at her, but said nothing for the moment. Silence suited him better. His posture spoke volumes about how broken he felt, inside. Defeated. Confused. Detached, even. He sighed and shifted on Maverick's back.

When Ennis went silent again, she studied the way he was holding himself.

"You know," she murmured quietly, glancing up at the sky herself, "Shutting off like that, it's not going to help you and Jack any in the long run."

"Me an' Jack, we're okay." Ennis answered, his back stiffening, then slouching again. He'd gotten a lot of his frustration out on Jack, before he'd made the post. Jack likely wouldn't be able to walk straight for a few days.

"For now," she retorted quietly. "I just ... don't want you to try and act like none of this is doing anything to you. Around everyone else ... fine, but not with Jack." And not with her, if she had anything to say about it.

"Ain't y'concern how things is with me an' Jack." That spared Trindle a look. He wasn't upset. In fact, he was more clam with her, than with anyone. Especially now. She may not have been able to tell, but he was settling down. She had a calming effect on him.

Trindle arched her brow at him. "I'm concerned for your happiness and his." That was simple enough to state, and it was the truth. She ducked her head once before she added, "Are we going to stop so you can drink?"

"'S a spot, up yonder," Ennis tilted his head forward. Maverick knew the way, and led Lucky with a steady gait.

The spot was somewhat secluded, over looking a small pond that was a haven for ducks and geese during the day. In the early evening hours, only a few fowl remained.

Ennis slid off Maverick, and though he had no reigns to tether the horse, he didn't seem concerned.

Well, if Ennis wasn't going to be concerned by the lack of tether then neither was she. She hopped off of Lucky and gave the horse's mane a good stroke before she walked over to Ennis and offered him the bottle of firewhisky.

"It's strong," she warned with a shake of her head. Definitely a bit too strong for her to have more than a shot or two of without feeling a bit ill. Ennis had said he wanted something fast-acting, though.

"Need strong," Ennis muttered, quickly uncapping the bottle and drinking directly from the bottle. he pulled off with an obscene pop and a hand swiped across his mouth.

So he'd done this more than once. Somehow she wasn't surprised, all things considered. Trindle smoothed her fingers through her own hair and then bit her lip, sliding down onto the ground.

Ennis had quite a bit of practice at the emo drinking, though he would never label it as such. He drank again from the bottle and only after taking the bottle away from his mouth, he looked over at Trindle and offered the bottle, without comment.

Trindle arched her brow at Ennis, merely flashing him a smile.

"No thanks." She didn't drink much on her best days. A glass of wine now and again, maybe. "Knock yourself out."

Ennis grunted, but then that just meant more drink for him. He tipped the bottle up, probably drinking too much, too fast.

Certainly too much too fast.

She simply sat back. Men would drink as much as they wanted to no matter what the women in their lives warned, she knew.

Sitting silent is all right for now.

Ennis could hold his drink, perhaps better than most. He certainly could pass his own limit and become...belligerent, which equals violent in Ennis' case. He was aware of Trindle, not Jack, sitting with him. He'd be careful, and not drink too much. He was upset, not particularly angry. He needed to think and clear his head, not add to the mess by lashing out at someone unaccustomed to his temper.

He glanced at her, the bottle nearly a third down. Firewhiskey. He could feel it rumbling in his belly, burning in his veins. He held the bottle down to his thigh, his face turned to the horizon, staring off into space.

"She 'as always m'baby. An' now she's here, an' she's got 'er own baby. An' she's tellin' me Jack's dead. An' that baby, ain't no lie, he's Jack's grandbaby too. I see him, in Drew's face. He gots th'Twist mouth." Ennis turned his gaze back to Trindle. "It ain't right."

Trindle smiled slightly while he spoke. "I know that it seems ... strange, at least. Having your daughter so old here, and with a child of her own...but seeing Jack in your grandson's face ... is it so bad? I rather like Jack."

She shifted so that she leaned against him just a little. "It might not be the sort of right that you're accustomed to, Ennis, but I can't see it being wrong."

Ennis settled the bottle of whiskey between his knees and pulled a cigarette out of his pocket. He offered one to Trindle, his other hand searching for his lighter.

After deciding that Ennis wouldn't like her just watching the cigarette burn down, she shook her head.

She could watch his and have the smell of it, so it would be about the same thing.

Ennis drew his hand back and lit the fag. He puffed a few times before sliding the lighter back in his pocket. He glanced at Trindle, but had little to say. He sighed and shifted and took another sip of the whiskey.

She'd spent a good portion of her life in silence, so it wasn't as if she was a stranger to it. Trindle let her gaze wander to the hand and the cigarette, leaning back on her palms.

Some days silence might have been deafening, but today wasn't one of those days. Not for Trindle, at least.
