Who: Ennis Del Mar and Death
What: Meeting, Drinking
When: This weekend
Where: Random bar in Utah

Ennis double checked his appearance, using a pair of grooming scissors to trim the stray hairs at the back of his neck and along his jaw. Satisfied, he decided to wear his favorite white Stetson hat, knowing he wold take it off, because it was disrespectful to wear a hat on a date with a lady. Not that he was going on a date. he didn't even know her name. he'd met her via the message boards, where Jack had posted for help on the ranch. If he felt a little bit guilty aboutt hat, he swallowed it down.

He didn't have much time to waste wallowing, if he wanted to be ontime to meet his new friend. He stroked the dash of his pick up, still adjusting to the modern model, before turning the engine over. Roraing to life, he backed out of the drive and headed down the side of the mountain he called home, into town to find his mystery date. He arrived at the designated meeting point two minutes early, and stood at the front of his truck, leaning against the grill.

"I ain't never been nowhere outside Wyomin'." Till now, of course. he'd been in Los Angeles. And now owned land in Utah. Aside from that, he'd never been farther than Brokeback, which was symbolically the ends of the world.

"Y'tell me. where's the best places t'go?"

"Well," Death ran through an incredibly long list in her head, but thought it best to try and keep the possibilities simple for the moment. She didn't want him to feel completely out of place. "Disneyland? Or Disneyworld." She grinned, looking much like a sweet teenager. "There's New York, which I'm a little partial to. London. Moscow. Rome, Italy." She looked him over. "If you've never been outside of Wyoming, you should see a city today, I think."

Ennis shook his head, at first. he didn't want to go anywhere like Disney without Jack. Though, to be fair, jack had been out of Wyoming before. Jack had lived in Texas quite a while.

"New York," he agreed with a nod. How they would get there in a matter of moments, Ennis couldn't understand. It was a lot to wrap his head around.

"New York it is!" Her smile was bright as she waited for him to finish his drink. Then she rose, offering him some cash to pay for her drink. Death had a feeling he'd refuse it, but it seemed the right thing to at least offer to pay.

"'S on me." Ennis held a hand up, refusing her money as she'd expected. He lay a ten down on the table to cover the drinks and a decent sized tip. Of course his frame of reference was the 1980's, when drinks were a bit cheaper.

"Thank you, Ennis." The bill paid, they walked out of the bar, side by side. Death winked at the bartender, who'd been the one to stare longest and most critically. He looked slightly confused by her kindness.

Once they were outside, Death pointed them in the direction of the nearest portkey. "It's pretty close," she said. "And it's a little disorienting. We can portkey together because the first time's weird."

"Y've done this b'fore. I'll trust you." That spoke volumes for how Ennis felt about her. Comfortable, in an odd kind of way. Like he'd known her all his life, or at least more than a half hour sitting in a skanky bar at the bottom of a mountain in Utah.

The walk was a peacefully quiet little hike down a few narrow roads. Eventually they reached an old looking boot that lay forgotten on the floor. She looked at Ennis. "We're here." She grinned. "You said you trust me." She met his eyes warmly, "All you need to do is touch it. On three. Then things will spin. I'll be next to you the whole time. It's like... a weird rollercoaster ride."

Ennis glanced back the way they'd come, just once. And then he reached out, waiting for Didi's count to hit three, before touching the boot. All at once, he felt himself sucked into something not unlike a cyclone. Spinning out of control, he couldn't even scream. And then it was over, and he was standing in New York. At least he assumed it was New York. He certainly didn't seem to be in Utah, anymore. Dark eyes searched frantically for Didi.

"Fun, hm?" She was smirking. "Welcome to New York, Ennis." They weren't quite midtown, which was probably for the best. There were tall buildings everywhere, but the huge crowds weren't really around. It wasn't the right hour for the large crowds anyway.

Once she spoke, and her voice reassured Ennis, he doubled over, puking. He held his hat to the side of his face toward Didi, his other hand braced against the ground while he heaved. After a moment, he settled back on his heels, hat on his head, and swiped the back of his hand across his mouth.

Ennis had never been on a roller coaster, or anything more thrilling than an old tractor. His stomach still felt queasy, but he managed a small smile.

Death offered a reassuring hand to his arm, rubbing gently. She didn't draw anymore attention to the fact that he'd gotten sick. She walked the two of them to the end of the block, toward a man who sold hotdogs and asked him for a bottle of water. She offered it to Ennis.

Ennis took the water with a nod of thanks. He uncapped it and sipped a slow sip, almost experimental. Deeming it acceptable, he took in another sip and swished it around his mouth, then spit it out.

She didn't ask him if he was okay, figuring that after a few minutes he was well enough to take to walking. Ennis was a cowboy, which meant he was of hardy stock. Death waited a minute before walking, going at a relaxed pace down the street. They were headed in the direction of Central Park, a green haven from all of the tall buildings and people in suits.

Ennis was more than content to walk in silence. He enjoyed walking, seeing the land as his feet carried him along. He didn't care much where he was going or when he'd get there, or even when he'd get back. He liked to keep moving.

Together, they kept moving until they hit Central Park. It was cold outside, but not terribly so and the sun was out. They could stay out for a little bit.

They passed a small gated park for children and inside sat clusters of nannies who kept watchful eyes on little ones. "It's a nice day," Death commented lightly as she turned into the park.

"I got two little girls," Ennis nodded toward the park. "The din't live with me no more." More accurately, he didn't live with them. He brushed a hand over his mouth. "Don't matter, no how, they ain't here."

"I'm sorry," Death said softly. "Miss them?" Her eyes kept on the children until they were deep enough in the park that the kids' laughter couldn't be heard.

"Sometimes," Ennis admitted. he looked off to the horizon for a moment. It was Junior he missed most. He had little affection for Jenny. He'd often thought, if they'd stopped with just Junior, things would have been different.

"No matter, no how. Ain't gonna cry over it, now."

Death nodded. "Understandable." He was a tough guy. She doubt he'd shed a tear in anyone's presence. Maybe a certain someone. Her dirty looking sneakers kicked a stray acorn across some green. "Do you like being here?" She asked it suddenly, her eyes focused on people in the distance, walking together, walking alone, walking with pets.

"Here, New York?" Ennis asked, but answered his own question with a shake of his head. "Jack's here. An', we're t'gether. The ranch, an' all." As far as Ennis was concerned, nothing else mattered. The girls were back home with their mother, who was always the one to take care of them anyway. Ennis had failed from the first day.

"Good." Death smiled. "I'm glad you have your friend with you." She had that way about her that made her aware that asking too much about Jack might put Ennis on edge. So she didn't. If he wanted to talk he would. If not, they'd continue to stroll.

There was a man with a cart in the distance. "Would you like some ice cream?" In spite of the cold, an ice cream bar sounded good. "I think I'm going to get some ice cream for myself."

"It ain't no more 'an thirty degrees out here, an' you want ice cream?" Ennis shook his head, clearly amused. "Y're insane." He met her gaze,a nd hoped she didn't take offense. "So I'll 'ave what you're havin'."

Death wasn't easily offended. "I get that a lot actually," she laughed lightly. "The cold doesn't really bother me." It only did if she let it. They walked up to the man and Death requested two Ben and Jerry's ice cream bars. The man gave them both a look that was half amused and clearly showed his belief that neither were playing with a full deck. Death paid him before Ennis could fish for money and handed him one.

Ennis took the ice cream and gave it a cursory look. Unwrapping it, he sniffed it before he bit into it. The cold hit his teeth, but he swallowed it down.

"Thank you, Didi." He took care to pronounce all the sounds.
