Who: Superman and Lois, probably NPC's
What: After Superman defeats Apocalypse here
When: Later tonight
Warnings: None I can think of

The televisions in the newsroom were tuned to every imaginable network still broadcasting. Most of them were airing the same reports and warnings about what areas in the world had taken the most damage and where to stay away from. Lois glanced up every minute or two to look for for news on Superman. She knew the phantom zone projector was completed, she knew Superman was looking for Apocalypse, and she knew it was happening soon.

And then a familiar voice coming off one of the televisions caught her ear. She jumped out of her seat and nearly ran to the right television that was airing an international station. There was Superman, delivering and receiving blows with Apocalypse in a ferocious battle. She was joined by co-workers as every television was switched to the same station and they stood and watched, holding their breaths. Silence filled the newsroom as everyone tensed up.

Lois knew from years of watching him that Superman was beginning to tire. But she knew he could do it, he had to. He wouldn't let up. They watched as Superman activated some sort of field, which slowly trapped the mutant, then the reporter announced that Superman had defeated Apocalypse. Early cheers that went up around the newsroom were cut short when everyone watched in horror as Superman was hit by the beam and fell into the sea.

Lois was already on her way out the door as Superman hit the water, heading for the portkey to take her to New York. Her heart was thundering in her chest. She wouldn't rest until they found Superman. She couldn't lose him, not here, not again. Why did she have to be so far away?

It seemed to take forever to get to New York, and even longer to get to the shoreline where crowds had gathered to watch the final battle. From what people were saying, Superman hadn't been seen yet. Lois fought her way through the crowd, muttering excuses and calling out Superman's name. She'd join the search effort, she'd get on one of those news helicopters or a search plane or a boat until he was found. Lois fought her way amongst the heavy crowd at the shoreline, headed towards a Coast Guard vehicle at a small pier. "Excuse me, sir? Sir!" she called to an officer.

He looked around.

"Which way from here?"

He smiled at her.

"Now, Lois, I know you. You need to sleep, too."

Then he winked at her and handed her a digital recorder.

"Besides, I picked this up and got you a few sound bites from different places I visited the last few days. Might make that a little easier."

On it were sound bites from Apocalypse, Superman, a Russian speaking hero, the president of France, the prime Minister of the UK, and a few others.

She stared at the digital voice recorder. "How did you have time to... Never mind." Somehow in between rescuing people, saving cities, working on a plan to stop Apocalypse, briefing her, and building the Phantom Zone projector, he'd apparently found time to get sound bites for her?

She shook her head a little in amazement and gave him directions to her apartment. This man had just saved the world and he was insisting on sleeping on her couch. "Why don't you take the bed first? When you wake up, we'll get something to eat and then we can switch." She was beginning to feel like she was protesting too much. "And thanks."

He eyed her as he lifted off with one arm holding her close, and then zipped away.

"Maybe. I guess that would work."

He shook his head.

"You always were stubborn Lois."

His smile was wry as he offered it to her.

"Hang on."

And then, for a moment, everything blurred, and they were standing next to her door, no one in sight.

"And you're not stubborn?" she replied wryly, to match his smile. "You save the world and won't let anyone do anything nice for you."

She held on as instructed and sucked in her breath as things blurred. She was surprised to see they were already in front of her door. Lois held on for a few more moments, as if making sure there was really solid ground beneath her feet. She'd once again grown unaccustomed to flying, and while it was exhilirating, she needed a minute to right herself.

Lois looked up at him, to say thank you, but realized just how close they were and swallowed instead. There might've been a moment of sorts, if the timing had been different, if he hadn't just saved the world and badly needed rest. She carefully slid down to the ground.

She had a moment of amusement, remembering how she'd tried to compare flying in a plane with Richard with a seatbelt and safety gear, to flying with Superman as he held you, nothing separating you from the wind or the clouds or falling except for his arms and the trust you had in him. There was no question in her mind which was better.

"Thank you," she said with a small smile. "Can I get you anything? Something to eat? Drink?" She'd had the presence of mind to grab her coat before leaving the newsroom, with her keys and phone in the pockets. Trying to appear calm after the end of the world had just been averted, she pulled out her keys to unlock the door and let them in.

"Well, I was raised in the midwest... and you know what you always said about those raised around bulls and corn."

He smiled as he watched her, holding her until she was ready to go. His eyes were on her, and he noticed again, as he had so many times before, how beautiful she was.

"Some milk would be nice. Thanks, Lois."

He followed her in, looking around as he settled to the couch to sit.

"If you mean you all grow up to be Boy Scouts, I can believe that."

Lois went straight for the kitchen to get him some milk and brought him a glass. She was concerned at how tired he was. "Are you sure I can't get you anything else? Bedroom's right through there," she pointed to a hallway off the living room.

"If that is what you want to say, Lois..."

He rose and sipped the milk.

"I am just tired. I need sleep, then sun tomorrow."

he gestured.

"Lead on."

Truth was, now that she was home, Lois was about to fall asleep on her feet, and things were going over her head. But she wasn't going to let him see that. Then he'd insist she take the bed and the entire argument would've been for nothing.

She nodded and led the way to the bedroom. "Make yourself at home," she said, gesturing tiredly for him to go inside, but giving him a soft smile. "I'll be out here if you need anything."

He then did something he rarely did; he hugged her.

"Thank you, Lois."

He walked over to the bed and sat down, then slowly lay down. Within moments, he was asleep.

Lois blinked as he hugged her. Then she put her arms around him to return the hug until he pulled back.

"You're welcome."

It amazed her how a man that could be so fast was now moving so slow. She closed the door quietly and then went into the living room to kick off her shoes and collapse on the couch. She unwrapped a blanket laying on the back, laid it over her legs, and fell into an exhausted sleep.

He woke hours later, in the depth of night, slowly climbing out of bed to go to the restroom. When he came back, he peered out at her, and smiled, gently arranging her blanket so it covered more of her, and carrying her to the bed, to let her sleep there.

Then he curled up on the sofa and was out again, just like that.

Lois awoke in the early morning, stretching and yawning. The sun was just beginning to peek through her window. She stopped short when she saw she was in her bed and not out on the couch where she fell asleep. Muttering under her breath, she got up and tiptoed quietly out into the main room to see if he was still there.
