Entry tags:ganieda, sonya blade

Who: Sonya and Ganieda
What: A Conversation
Where: A London Tea Shop
Warnings: None at the moment.

Ganieda is quite grateful that the meeting place is in a tea shop. She needs a moment for her head to stop spinning and for her body to readjust after the strange trip with the Portkey. It was a most unusual way to travel and not as pleasant as she'd hoped it would be.

She sweeps her skirts under her as she sits and waits to order until Sonya gets there. Ganieda feels rather excited to see the woman she considers as a friend again.

Ganieda nods. "That does sound dangerous. The hazelnut is said to be a sacred thing, opening up the passages to the spiritual world."

She shrugs. "Whether it would be helpful to others, I do not know, but it is a ritual."

Sonya couldn't help but grin, despite herself. "I'm not one for rituals, I've taken seminars on black magic rituals and magic, but I tend to stay away from them."

"Never heard of hazelnuts opening spiritual portals, I just know they taste really good with coffee or chocolate-"

She frowned. "Hell, I just gave myself a chocolate craving."

Ganieda giggles. "Well, who is to say that sacred things cannot go very well with chocolate?"

She laughs fully at that. "That entirely depends on the religion. The Hindus believe that cows are sacred, and milk and chocolate are a great combination. I believe it was the Incas and Aztecs that did consider chocolate to be sacred."

Sonya pulls out 2 quid. "Could you be a dear and buy me a chocolate hazelnut bar on the counter?" she slides the two coins across the table.

"Of course," she says, going up to the counter and paying for the chocolate.

Upon bringing it back, she asks, "So...is that the main currency of Britain now?"

Sonya near rips open the package, taking a bite of the candy and swallowing before she answers.

"It's either pounds, quid or sterling." She pulls out her wallet and shows her examples of british currency.

She smiles at Sonya's enthusiasm over the chocolate.

She peers down at the money. "Not much different, really, from the coinage of my time. Save for the portrait of the monarch."

She finishes off the chocolate.

"Same in my country, only it's the presidents not monarchs."

"Some things, it seems, do not change."

She sips her tea. "So are you enjoying living here?"

"Couldn't really answer that. I've been transferred or moved to so many army bases, it's part of the job. I don't mind living here, but I'd prefer it a lot more if I was allowed to do more at the base."

"This is the first time that I was transferred and yet not living in the barracks."

"But you must be more comfortable. I understand that once you get a bit bigger, being comfortable will be at a premium." She grins.

"That's when I become bigger, now I'm just trying to focus on not killing anyone who frays my nerves."

"Army bases were meant for necessities, not so much comfort. Though until a few years ago I never saw myself getting married, let alone pregnant-just shows what they tell you about 'never say never'."

Without knowing it, her hand went over to the dog tags around her neck when she mentioned the army base.

She watches Sonya's hands. "What are the chains around your neck?" she asks curiously.

Sonya gave a faint smile.

"Army identification tags, thought before I came here, they were called dog tags. Every military officer that goes through the training and becomes enlisted earns them. It's both an honor and a reminder that there's a chance you'll be killed in action-KIA we call it."

She pulled the chain from her neck and hand them carefully to Ganieda. On the chain were two silver, metal ID tags, one was attached to a smaller chain on the necklace. On both tags was the following information:

Blade
Sonya E.
192-865-0074
A POS
Catholic

"What would happen is that if a soldier's killed in battle, the tag on the shorter chain is mailed to the soldier's family while the other is either buried with the body."

She pointed to the tags. "My army serial number and under that is my blood type, if I or any of my men need a blood transfusion, the medics will know if my blood's a match or not."

Ganieda studied the tags as she listened to Sonya.

"Memento mori. A reminder of mortality," she said softly. She handed them back. "Thank you."

She said, "Our soldiers did not have such things...but then, the battles were not far from home. Their families would have come to find the fallen and injured." She smiles slightly. "It was only a little different."

War had the same results all around. Men and women died. Families grieved. And later, treaties that did not mean much were penned.

She took the chain and placed it over her neck.

"They won't allow families to search for the bodies. For one, a soldier will try to retrieve the body before they return home, there's also the chance that an enemy might still be in the area or the place booby trapped. And soldiers fight in any country they're needed. When you get the chance, look up information on the First and Second World Wars, that should give you a general idea."

"I imagine it's still the same in your time: the men in power declare war but it's the poor men that fight it?"

She nodded. "Aye. Most of them are farmers defending their land." She shakes her head.

"That was always the part that I did not like about becoming a queen. The tacit approval of sending poor men to their deaths while the rulers sat around."

Sonya's eyebrows lowered. "That would suck. Thankfully, when I became queen, Tsung let me be in charge of his armies. It was much easier keeping track of his armies that way, instead of having to put his trust-or what he means as 'trust-in some other General. Atleast that way, I would be with my men when they needed me." The army was her family-even in a dysfunctional sense. There was nothing she wouldn't do for her men.

Ganieda nodded. "You are a good ruler and leader, then. Do you ever foresee a time when you will no longer be a soldier, Sonya?"

It was clear that she was born to be a soldier, a leader of men, and a good one.

Sonya had to laugh. "I have to be, or Tsung might've taken over only to let my realm fall into chaos-he really just doesn't care about ruling, it's just the power image he cares for."

"As for your last question, I'll stop being a soldier when my bones suddenly decide to go creaky-or when someone kills me and I pass on, whichever comes first."

She smiles warmly at Sonya. She greatly respected the older woman's skill and determination.

"I thought as such," she said. "Let us hope then, that the bullets miss you for a very, very long time." Ganieda raises her cup to her.

Sonya's cup was empty, but she did give the young woman a small salute.

"Here's hoping."
