Dating, dating, dating, it suddenly occurred to him after the fact that he'd never been on an actual date before.
And it suddenly made him very, very nervous to even contemplate the idea.
Dating meant that he'd have to actually try to get to know someone, think of witty things to say, and not make a fool of himself as a first impression. It didn't help that Alex's mother was Anne of all people, but he tried very hard not to think about that.
He wasn't prone to sweaty palms, but that was the only thing he didn't have to worry about. Everything else was nerve-wracking. Formal but not too formal, foregoing the tie that was almost like a best friend. Worrying that he would look too casual without it, or too stuffy with it. By the time he arrived at the restaurant, his first stop was the men's room to splash some cold water on his face, count to ten, and try to control his nerves.
It would have been so much easier just to drink. |
