Who: Emily, Buffy and Faith
What: Officer Summers to the rescue
Where: The alley near Faith's house
When: nighttime
Warnings: violence, Emily shows off her crazy, bad baddy badness

Emily was drifting off into space, somewhere with her head in the clouds as she walked away from Bruce's car and towards the house she shared with Faith. She'd contemplated inviting him in with her but she wasn't exactly sure how to explain to someone that she lived in a brothel. It wasn't something that she could exactly keep a secret with all of the girls in and out of the house all of the time. She decided that it was too soon to be telling him about that and decided that for now, it was best to leave things as they were.

She was humming a song underneath her breath and pulling the keys out of her purse when suddenly there was a man she didn't recognize standing right in front of her. She paused and just looked at him for a minute.

"Can I help you?" She asked him.

"Yeah. Gimme your purse." He told her plainly.

She couldn't help it, the corner of her mouth came up in a smirk. Was she being mugged? She really was a New Yorker now. Pulling the gun out of her purse she leveled it on his head and gave him a look. "I really like this purse. It's Prada." She shrugged, turning the safety off, amused at this stranger who thought he'd found an easy target for the night.

She had thought he would just go running off into the night, looking for some other girl's purse to steal but instead, a hand from behind her caught her by surprise. She tried to fight him off but his hand clamped down around her mouth as the other one fought for control of the gun. Just as she lost her grip on it, it discharged, sending a bullet piercing through the first guy's shoulder.

He screamed and cursed, putting his hand to his bloodied shoulder before looking at his red palm in dismay. "Bitch!"

Emily was busy trying to claw the hand off of her mouth so that she could tell these two guys to shoot eachother when the first guy's bloodied fist collided so hard into her jaw she was sure that she would have cartoon birdies swirling around her head for days. She struggled, kicked as hard as she could, screaming around the hand muffling her cries. Faith was right there.... only a few feet away, probably fast asleep in the house they shared. Emily would have given anything in that minute to have her friend look out the window right now.

"I want you to tell your lady friend upstairs something for me. Tell her that Mr. Azizian doesn't take too kindly to bad business. He paid for the night, and your friend better be prepared to pay him for his medical expenses the next time she sends him to the hospital."

Emily frowned, stilling for a moment as she stared at him. Suddenly she knew exactly who these guys were, they were just thugs of that guy who'd beaten up one of the girls while Faith was on sabbatical. Emily wasn't sure what to do about it at the time but luckily Faith had stepped out of the shadows long enough to take care of the problem. She wanted to tell him that was Faith's idea, Faith was the one who owned and ran the business, Emily was just being a good friend and helping her out. "I'm not a hooke-!" She tried to yell through his hand but was cut off when she felt her wrist snap backwards. She literally could hear the bones crunching and breaking. Her eyes filled with tears and she wailed in pain as the unforgiving grip that had been crushing her ribs finally released.

She fell to the ground in a heap as one of them grabbed up her purse and looked inside of it. "This is a good start. Medical bills are expensive." He said to her, leaning down close and grabbing her by her neck as he pulled her back up to her feet. She was still moaning at the pain in her wrist as he leaned in so close she thought he was going to kiss her for a moment. "You're gonna find out." He promised her tightening his grip so she had trouble breathing as she tried to cradle her broken wrist in her hand.

Tears were streaming down her face as she looked back up hopefully at the house again, willing Faith to appear. Or Solvei. Or Dean. Or Sam. She would take whatever she could get right at the moment. It wasn't as if this was the first time her life had been in immediate danger but before, someone else had always been with her. One of them had been with her and now she felt completely alone, in the dark with the two of them.

They seemed familiar to her somehow.

Suddenly there was the sharp glint of metal in her face and Emily's eyes danced in the light of the blade as it came so close to her eye she was afraid to even breathe. The crushing hand around her throat was mercifully lifted and now she had the power. They were only human and Emily? Emily was special.

But she couldn't stop staring at the knife, only an inch away from her retina. One wrong move, one word, one flinch and it was going to drive itself straight into her eye. She was frozen.

"Man, we gotta go!" The other guy shouted. "Someone's coming!"

Emily breathed in a sigh of relief when the knife moved and she heard a car driving up the street. "We'll finish this later." The knife wielding maniac promised her before he shoved her to the ground and took off running after his friend.

Emily sat on the pavement for a long moment, breathing hard. That was until she heard footsteps approaching. She wasn't sure who was coming but she felt danger. Something was wrong. You couldn't trust anyone because everyone wanted to hurt you. It was the laws of nature, both demon and human.

She quickly scurried backwards, finding a large cardboard box next to a trash dumpster. Hiding inside of it she practically held her breath as she hugged the wall of the box waiting for the footsteps to fade away.

Buffy quickly got out of the patrol car and walked to the other side, opening the door for Emily. JT went inside to explain what was going on and it wasn't long until Buffy pretty much dragged Emily inside. She was speaking, or really even blinking. She'd seen this before, mainly in herself. It was like pulling along dead weight and once a nurse brought out a wheelchair, Buffy sat her down in it and rubbed her forehead.

"She has bruises around her neck, she was choked out it looks like and her hand and arm are swollen," she explained, but the nurse told her that she'd take care of it and Buffy just nodded, watching as they took Emily inside and she followed behind them until they were in an exam room. Buffy didn't say anything to her, just stood there, waiting and once the doctor came in to look over Emily, Buffy stepped outside and texted Faith, telling her to get to the hospital quickly and what room to go to.

Standing outside by the door, she could hear the doctor inside the room, trying to get through to Emily, but it wasn't working. She wasn't saying anything and finally the doctor came out, telling Buffy that they were going to give her an X Ray and that it would be a few minutes. Slipping inside the room, Buffy closed the door behind her.

Faith got the text message from Buffy about needing to go to the hospital and she didn't think twice about it, she just went. She figured Buffy must have gotten into some kind of scrape to have ended up there. Either that or someone else did and the idea of Solvei getting eaten by vampires was weighing heavily on her mind as she drove the Bentley to Mount Sinai without even hitting the curb for once.

Once inside she headed to the room and saw Buffy standing in the doorway. She looked fine, but glancing around her she could see Emily sitting on a bed covered in bruises and holding her swollen arm with her other hand. "What the hell happened?" She asked loudly and when Emily flinched away from her she stopped in her tracks and looked over at Buffy who only shrugged in her direction.

"Hey, hey... come on..." She said, putting a hand on Em's arm and just watched the look in her eyes. "What happened?"

Emily just shook her head at her but moved slightly closer, like she wanted to hide behind her. Faith frowned over at Buffy again. "Does someone want to explain what happened?" She asked both of them, looking back and forth between the two of them.

Faith was there in record time; Buffy was impressed. Faith looked Buffy over though and Buffy just shook her head no and Faith walked inside to see Emily on the bed. Pushing herself off the wall, she turned down her walky when voices started talking over it. Emily looked like she was trying to hide behind Faith and maybe it would be better if Buffy just go. She'd get a statement later because she knew JT would want one, somehow she probably had to convince him to not do that. Buffy would figure out who did this, or Faith. Either way, the guy, or guys that Buffy saw running away would get what was coming to them.

"I was driving by and saw them in the alley. I didn't know it was Emily, but I had JT pull over and as I was walking back, two guys ran off. I started going after them, but as I ran by, I noticed her and went to her. I don't know what happened, but by the way ..." Buffy nodded toward Emily and looked back at Faith.

"It wasn't exactly a friendly altercation. The doctor is going to come back to take her to get X Rays for her wrist," Buffy explained.

Buffy felt uncomfortable about standing there because it seemed to make Emily more distressed.

"I think I'm going to go, maybe she'll feel a little more comfortable or ... yeah."

"I'm okay." Emily said, finally finding her voice again. Faith was familiar and it made it a little easier. She didn't know Buffy very well and the doctor had poked and prodded her sore wrist and asked about a thousand questions. Both Faith and Buffy were both staring at Emily now. She swallowed hard, staying close to Faith as she held her broken wrist.

"Just a couple of guys." She shrugged slowly, giving them a serious look. "I guess they wanted my purse."

"You got mugged?" Faith asked her, in such a way that lead her instantly to believe that her friend suspected there was more to the story than that. "Where? Where was your gun? Why didn't you just put the mind whammy on them?"

She was asking too many questions at once and Em just closed her eyes for a second before she opened them back up. "They surprised me." She moved her eyes slowly over to Buffy. "Thanks." She told her. She wasn't sure what to think about Buffy before tonight but now she was almost obligated to like her for dragging her out of that alley.

Emily licked her dry lips, thinking dryly that if she had her purse she could find some chapstick. She wasn't getting that back anytime soon.

Instead of leaving, Buffy pressed her back up against the wall again and crossed her arms. She barely knew Emily and she felt like she was intruding on something private, because who really wants to talk about something traumatic with people they don't know around? Buffy frowned though when Faith asked Emily about the gun and she looked down at her own. It wouldn't have mattered. They were long gone.

Just then the door opened and the doctor came in to get Emily to take her to get the X Ray's done. A nurse followed with a wheelchair and it wasn't long until Emily was on her way, with Faith following her. Buffy let out a breath and walked out to the hallway, seeing JT walk up.

"Just go ahead and go, I'm going to stay here for a while," she said and looked up at him, seriously. "They're my friends, I just want to make sure everything is okay. I'll figure this all out."

JT nodded and turned around, and walked away. Just as Buffy turned around to go back in the room, she saw Faith walking up.

Faith didn't have a lot to say on the way back to the waiting room. Emily had told her what had happened out in that alley and besides being pissed off beyond reason she was feeling plenty guilty. What had happened was her fault. Okay, so maybe the asshole deserved to get beat down but Faith wished he would have exacted his revenge on her instead. Or at least, tried.

Well, he wouldn't be getting more revenge anytime soon because Faith was going to fucking kill him this time.

She was surprised to see Buffy still sitting in Emily's room. She folded her arms over her chest as she looked at her. What she really wanted to ask her was about Spike. How's Spike? She could just hear the tone in her voice in her head when she thought about it but right now, they had bigger problems to worry about.

"It was my fault." She said. Up until now she had successfully hidden everything from Buffy. Wait. Wasn't that, Officer Buffy? After tonight, she wasn't sure she really gave a crap anymore. She was just glad that Emily was okay. She knew that what she was doing was dangerous. It's just when you're a vampire slayer your idea of danger is a little skewed.

"They were tryin' to send me a message."

Buffy frowned and looked over at Faith. How could this be her fault? How could the guys be sending Faith a message? Yeah, Buffy was all kinds of confused right now and she sat down on the end of the bed and looked up at the girl who was apparently keeping secrets.

"Faith, you can tell me," she started and looked down at the uniform that was fitted over her body before raising an eyebrow to Faith. "Well, almost everything. You know, badge and all," she grumbled and wanted to pull her a little closer, considering they were ... something? Nothing? She wasn't even sure, but if a couple of nights ago was anything to go on, then she was figuring definitely on.

It was just hard, to well, start that all up.

"Why would those guys be sending you a message?" She asked and waited for Faith to answer.

Faith didn't want to tell her but to be honest, she didn't give a shit that Buffy was a cop now. She was still Buffy and if she arrested Faith? Well, then. So be it. She was still a criminal though and the fact that Buffy had come back as a cop was just another one of the many things dividing the two of them.

"The reason why I haven't invited you to my house is cause I run a brothel. It's what my ID card was when I got here and I just stuck it through. Last week one of my customers beat up Crystal so I kicked his ass. Y'know, taught him a lesson or whatever. Don't mess with me or mine. He sent some thugs out to send me a message, Em must've just been comin' home. So they took it out on her."

She waited a minute as Buffy looked at her. The reality of the situation was that Emily needed to find somewhere else to live, and Faith needed to be more present around the house and at work.

"So that's why you couldn't come over. Cause I live in a whorehouse. A real one." She added in thoughtfully before she took a step closer to Buffy and held out her hands. "So am I under arrest, Officer?" She asked her, her voice bordering between ironic and sarcastic.

Faith didn't know a lot about being a cop but she did know that Buffy could get in trouble at work just for knowing about her operation unless she did something about it. Somehow, Faith couldn't really seem to give a shit about the NYPD at the moment.

Buffy's lips parted a little while she listened to Faith say that she ... lived in a whorehouse. Right. That would explain alot. Well, the not inviting Buffy and the telling her no, that she couldn't come over and such, but there was just one problem. Buffy was a cop and what Faith was doing? Kinda on the illegal side. It wasn't as if Buffy would turn her in. She'd never do that, but there was still the whole moral clause that was going on and Buffy had a problem with that. She actually wished that Faith never told her.

"You could you know ... stop being a whore mommy, right?" Buffy asked and got up from the bed and moved a little closer to where Faith was. Buffy didn't agree with it, but to be honest, at least Faith wasn't out there killing anyone. Which honestly? She could be doing that instead.

"No, you're not. At least not right now," Buffy gave her a flirtatious look. "Maybe later on tonight ..." Buffy let that hang out there because to be honest, she didn't know what was going to happen tonight. With Emily or with anything. Anything that she wasn't mentioning or thinking about right now because yeah.

Nope, not gonna happen.

Faith smiled slightly despite herself, despite how shitty she felt about what happened to Emily. She hadn't expected Buffy to be so cool about it. Although she had made her little comment about stopping being a "Whore Mommy". Faith had her reasons for doing this job and it wasn't something she really felt the need to broadcast to anyone.

"Don't you have to get back to Spike?" She asked instead, watching the dark look settle over Buffy's eyes. "I know he's staying there with you. Dunno why you didn't just tell me."

Faith knew why she didn't just tell her. Because every time Faith saw or heard about Buffy with Spike or Angel she tended to get jealous and defensive immediately. She couldn't help it. She'd been dumped for a vampire one too many times.

"Forget it. I gotta get Emily home. I can take it from here." Faith said, folding her arms over her chest.

Slowly Buffy looked away from Faith and crossed her arms over her chest. Alright, so she was busted, wonderful. It was hard to explain, but the last time Buffy saw Spike, he was kinda dying to save the world and apparently he got brought back or something. She still wasn't sure. Everyday this world was getting more and more confusing.

"We're not gonna talk about this right now."

There was a reason that Buffy didn't really tell anyone. Anyone because it would get back to Faith and Faith because she'd give her a hard time and she knew that ever other word out of her mouth would be Spike. It was one big, huge deal to Faith because she was afraid that Buffy would leave her. Not that they were together or anything, because they weren't, but if they were, that'd be the reason.

"Fine, alright. I have to get back anyway," Buffy said and walked past her before turning around. "Your secret's safe with me," was all she said before disappearing down the hallway.
