Who: Rose Frost and Darius Summers
What: getting to know each other
Where: Rose's home
Warnings: language, maybe.

Darius was bewildered by everything that had happened. He was doing his best to regain his mental balance, but this was just too weird, even for him. For a moment he was irked when he realized that Chris and Hank had probably done stuff like this before and would know exactly what to do. But there wasn't much he could do about his luck up to this point, so he trudged toward the location he'd been given, hands in his pockets.

He knocked on Rose's door when he arrived, straightening his clothing unconsciously.

Rose owed Quentin Quire a big thank you. Once things had settled, she'd have to send him some flowers and a card. It was largely thanks to his help that Rose could stand and see straight. Her new telepathic powers were overwhelming. Quentin had put in enough of a block that Rose could function. She'd always wanted to have powers like her mother. One day of head pain had changed that. She couldn't wait for her claws to come back. But the telepathy wasn't completely useless.

Rose sensed Darius before she heard the knock. She was at the door, more curious than nervous. She'd never had a brother before. James didn't really count. Hopefully this Darius wouldn't disappoint. Rose opened the door. "Darius?"

He smiled at her, and nodded. "It's what my ID says, anyway. You're Rose, then?"

He held out a hand for her to shake.

She inspected him closely, looking him up and down for a silent second. He had the right look to him, just enough poise to his stance. Rose approved and have him her hand, a small smile on her face. "Yes, hello." She wasn't exactly warm upon first meeting, a product of her parents' aloofness. "Glad you made it."

She opened the door further and stood aside to let him in. The house was grand, expensively and ornately furnished without seeming tacky. There were plenty of spare rooms on the second floor. Rose would be inviting Darius to stay in one until things settled down.

It was about what Darius expected, and he nodded as he stepped in. "The portkeys are not as bad as I was expecting. Your house is very nice."

He shrugged off his coat, and made sure he didn't have mud on his shoes before he got too far into the house. "Do you live here by yourself?"

Rose chuckled at the thought of owning her own house. "No, it's mother's house. We all live here." Which could be said about a lot of things Emma owned. "That's to say, my father and our sisters."

"Right."

That was pretty much to be expected too. "No X-men?"

"No," Rose shook her head. It was weird, but the X-Men seemed to have scattered in this world and gone their own ways. A part of Rose didn't think it was right. "But mother runs a school for special children."

He blinked a little at that. "Really? Wow."

The second part got a nod, though. "She always said she only put up with saving the world so she could keep running the school."

He was pretty sure she'd been joking, but it was hard to tell with his family.

Rose's lips curled into a smile. "That sounds like something she'd say." They turned a corner together. "Would you like to see your sister?"

He nodded. "How old is she? Are the cuckoos here?"

He didn't mind the cuckoos, most of the time. The living ones, anyway. The undead ones that popped up (literally), every now and then he could do without.

"A year and a few months," Rose said. "Her name's Esme." Named after the Cuckoo, of course. "Sophie's the only Cuckoo here. The rest were around for a while but they disappeared." She paused, making a face. "That happens. Just like people will suddenly arrive here without warning, they'll disappear, as well."

"Huh." He thought about that for a moment. "I wonder if that's what happened back home?"

Still, he was more curious about his sister. No doubt his parents would be worried, but this was kind of run of the mill for his father, if not for his mother.

Rose led them to the baby's room. She missed her powers. Instinct had her trusting Darius, but she would have felt safer if she'd been able to smell him. Rose could learn a lot about a person from their scent. The telepathy would have been useful... if she'd been able to control it better. "I don't know. No one's been able to get back or check back home." Rose sighed quietly.

"She's right through here," Rose opened the door slowly for fear of waking Esme from a nap.

"Of course. That's how these things work, I'm sure." His voice had the barest edge of annoyance. This was well beyond his bullshit tolerance, even with the interesting family extensions.

He nodded and poked his head in, taking a cue from how Rose had opened the door. After all, he didn't want to invoke the wrath of a sleeping child or its mother. His mother. Sort of.

She was cute. Much cuter than Henry had been. But a lot things were, really.

Rose looked down on the baby. When she spoke, her voice was low. "She's rather well behaved. And cute." She smiled a little.

"So you aren't a mutant?" He looked old enough that his powers should have manifested.

He shook his head. "Nope. I have a latent mutation, but that doesn't even register as being anything worth note. My kids or grandkids might have funny colored skin or something, but I'm just me."

There was a practiced nonchalant shrug accompanying the words, and even his tone was neutral. "She is really cute. I'm glad she's well behaved. I remember when Henry was her age, and he cried all the time."

Darius had been six at the time, but that was old enough to remember those particular years.

Rose watched him critically. It must have been difficult, not having real powers with the parents he had. Rose wouldn't have liked being normal in a family of power houses. "Henry?"

"Youngest of us. I'm the middle child." The irony is not lost on him.

"Named after Hank McCoy, because Henry the Younger is permanently stuck in a diamond form, and would have killed Mom if it weren't for Henry the Older." Thus his name. "Chris was named after Corsair, and I think my name was picked out of a hat."

The last he said with a wry smile. "Or because it amused them to have a son with the inevitable nickname 'Dare'."

Rose leaned a little on the crib, making a face at the thought of being stuck in a diamond form. That was fairly frightening. "My bones are made of organic diamond. I've never had a diamond form. Thankfully."

"So do you live at the mansion?" She asked this cautiously, as she wasn't sure how sensitive he was about being normal and she really didn't want to upset him.

He nodded. "Yeah. There was a big controversy a few years ago that made it unsafe to live out and about. I manage the finances for the X-men, since we're independent of X-corp these days."

He laughed a little. "I'm glad I'm not a mutant sometimes. I'm not afraid of fighting, but it's not exactly the best career choice."

Rose hm'd. "I suppose you have a point." She enjoyed fighting sometimes. It was just in her blood to be a bit savage. And she couldn't be killed. Not for long, anyway.

"Shall I show you to a room?" Rose asked.

He nodded. "Yes. It's been a long day."

The thought of sleep had been miles from his mind, until she'd said that. He must have been running on pure excitement.

Which meant he was going to sleep like a rock.

At least there wouldn't be a world shattering crisis to wake him up.

He hoped, anyway.
