who. Frank and Alice
what. Getting engaged. Finally!
when. Friday evening
where. Some fancy dive in London
why. We've been planning this for MONTHS

It was pretty damn convenient that Alice had asked him out to dinner somewhere nice. In the back of his head, Frank wondered if Neville had somehow let it slip that Frank had been shopping around for an engagement ring. Maybe this was Alice's way of pushing him to pop the damn question already. He wouldn't put such a move past her. As Frank straightened his collar, he looked himself over in a mirror. There was a nervous grin on his face. Now was one of those moments that he'd kill for a cigarette. Not that there was much doubt that Alice would say yes. They were practically married already, very much in love and happy together. Still, he was a jumble of nerves.

He was all in order and it was getting late. After a moment in which he checked his pockets - he'd been carrying the ring around with him for days now, trying to figure out when best to get down on a knee and ask - he cleared his throat, paused for a moment to collect himself and went hunting for Alice.

Alice looked very relieved and smiled. She gave Frank a quick kiss on the lips before pulling back a bit to look at him strangely.

"Wait, why are you laughing at me?" she said, a little hurt (she had been completely serious), but mostly curious.

He didn't let her move far from him. His arms were around her middle. He wanted to kiss her again, but her question prevented him. He was still grinning. "Well..." one arm moved so that he could reach into his pocket. He didn't explain, only showed Alice the velvet covered box.

Alice's eyes widened in a big 'ohno'. "Oh Merlin...I...I ruined your chance, didn't I? Oh my gosh," she said shaking her head.

Then she completely switched gears, seeming to have thought of an idea. "Wait, wait right here," she said. "Let's start this over."

And before he could argue, she had run away around the corner and disappeared. It was several minutes, branching into five then ten before she reappeared. The top hat and tie was gone and she had even taken down her hair and rearranged it. As she stepped into the room, she looked around in wonder like she had never been here before.

"Hi, Frank. I hope I didn't keep you waiting, I had a hard time finding the place. I get easily lost and all that, you know," she said smiling. "Now...what's all this about?" she asked, gesturing to the table and flowers.

Frank was stuttering a confused, "Wait a second," as Alice ran off. He was still grinning and that wouldn't really go away anytime soon. One of the waiters was dressed tastefully and giving Frank a sidelong glance. Frank shrugged at him lightly and waited.

When she reemerged from wherever she'd gone, Frank rose from the seat he'd taken and bit back the amusement that was clear in his voice. He didn't want to laugh, but he probably would soon. He leaned in to give Alice a kiss and let this one linger a bit longer than the previous had. When that was done, he pulled away. "Hi." He cleared his throat and felt the nervousness dancing around in his system. In spite of this, he looked the epitome of cool. Frank was good at appearing calm in the worst of situations which was probably why he did so well in his line of work. Even though she knew what was coming, he felt a little jumpy.

"I'm not good at speeches like you are. All I know is that I love you. And I've loved you for a long time. And I want to love you for the rest of my life." He took a deep breath. "You've stuck by me through a lot of shit. Good and bad. You put up with my mum. You make me smile, even after I've had a miserable day. And I really like the blob cookies that you make." He smiled. "My day isn't complete unless I've seen you or spoken to you. My life wouldn't be right if I didn't have you as my wife."

He was smiling as he got to one knee. "So, you want to get married?" He opened the box to reveal a tasteful little band. Neville had sworn they'd worn similar rings in his lifetime.

It wasn't the best of speeches. It probably could have been more romantic. There were bits that he couldn't quite remember that he'd wanted to say. But Frank had tried his best.

Alice was biting her lip and silently crying through the whole mini-speech. As soon as he was done though, she ran and tackled him to the ground, hugging him and crying a bit louder now.

"Yes. Yes!"

The waiters stared and eventually just walked away, leaving behind menus, and leaving them alone.

He 'oof'ed as he was tackled. Alice looked small but she was pretty strong to take him down. Frank landed on his ass and wrapped his arms around her. "I love you," he said with a big grin on his face before leaning in to kiss her forehead. There were too many tears at the moment to kiss her lips. They remained like that for a few moments, people around them staring (most smiling at the sight). Eventually, Frank sat up and wiped Alice's face dry.

"We should probably sit in our chairs," he said, completely unable to hold in the little quiet laugh. He didn't really want to move and would have been okay staying on the floor with her, truth be told.

"Oh, right," she said, smiling. She kissed Frank, somewhere between a long kiss and a short one, then sat in her own chair.

She propped her menu up so Frank couldn't see her face, but she was grinning.

Frank realized as he craned his neck to try and see Alice's face, that he wasn't terribly hungry. He wasn't really thinking about his stomach. Or anything that wasn't Alice. He glanced at his menu and then up at her. His view was blocked, of course. He simply smiled.

"Alice?" He spoke to the back of her menu. "You want to get out of here?"

Alice put her menu down rather dramatically. "Frank Longbottom, are you suggesting what I believe you're suggesting? Because first of all your son might be home. AND I have granny knickers on that keep my stomach in that I was going to dispose of later so you couldn't see. I can't be letting you take them off," she said, flipping her menu up again dramatically and hitting herself in the face.

He heard the dull sound of laminated paper smacking into her face and had to bite his lip hard to keep himself from laughing. "Um." He choked for a moment, stifling the laughter from his voice, "I don't mind granny knickers." Probably not the smoothest thing to say, but it was true enough. Alice could make anything sexy.

Alice peered at him for a long time in the way a young child peers at someone funny looking at the store. Then suddenly, she just stood up, grabbed her purse, checked for her wand and walked towards the door, only giving Frank one glance back expecting him to follow.

"My mother always did say you were a bad influence on me."

He didn't really need any encouragement. Frank was on his feet and behind her in a second. He only hesitated a minute to slip the man who'd passed them their menus a few bills. It was a lot of money and the waiter hadn't really done anything to earn it. Frank was feeling generous.

"I thought your mum loved me," he said as they got to the door.

"She did. She always said I needed a bad influence or two," Alice said smirking.

She took his hand and pulled him to her. "Hotel, though," she said. She didn't want to be at home and risk Neville coming over. It was saving all of them some red faces.
