Who: Alan Shore and Denny Crane.
What: Balcony scene.
Where: ...Duh, the balcony? At the Boston office.
When: Some evening after a hard days work.
Why: Because it has to happen.
Warnings: Nah.

Alan walked out the door of Denny's office onto the large balcony. He was ready to relax with his drink after winning a difficult case. It was night, but not too dark since the whole city was lit up.

Denny wasn't there yet, but he would join shortly. Alan poured himself a drink and sat down in his seat. The cigar could wait until Denny got there.

"I don't think I was in love with any woman since...I don't know if I can go through that again. Denny... I'm a little frightened."

Denny knew what Alan meant. He might forget a lot of things these days, but he remembered the important conversations he had with his friend. He knew losing his wife had been rough on Alan. Denny had been married six times, and joked about it. Alan barely spoke of his marriage.

"You can do it," Denny said softly. "You have me now." Denny would be there for Alan, and he'd pick up the pieces, if need be. He hadn't been there when Alan's wife died, but he damn sure would be here as long as he lived. All the way up until the day that Alan has to shoot him.

Alan smiled at Denny. He knew Denny would stick with him, if only for the fact that Alan was one of the only people that didn't make him feel like he was over, but it still really meant something. Knowing he wouldn't be alone, no matter what.

"You're right, Denny. With you I could probably do anything."

Denny's drink was nearly empty and his cigar almost finished. It was a nice night. Cool, but not cold. Nice breeze.

After a pause, he broke the pensive stillness. "Sleepover?"

Alan laughed. "I think that sounds like a wonderful idea!"

"I'm not having sex with you," Denny warned, setting down his glass. He put out his cigar in the ash tray. He stood up, smoothing down his suit coat.

"Good, I'm glad we're both clear." Alan smiled, following Denny's example. He was smoothing down his own suit coat and looked over at the other man. Denny was there for him. Even if things fell apart, Denny would be there. Maybe that's what he needed. He'd been so scared before, he wasn't really sure what he had been scared of, but it was better with Denny here.
