Who: Candy and Mutt.
What: Going out to lunch.
When: Wednesday afternoon.
Where University of Chicago.
Warnings: Really mild swearing is possible, but other than that, nope.

Candy had kissed Onyxx goodbye before taking a taxi to the portkey. The process of taking one was always odd, and she felt a bit discombobulated afterwards, but she was getting better with them. Once in Chicago, she got her bearings and slipped into a business building, using her "my mom works here" excuse.

After looking at the map she'd printed out, she flew in the direction of the university, looking down for any people on roofs. She laughed when she saw one, hoping it was Mutt, and angled the craft downward. She had a bag in the glyph, and it had her wallet and things, as well as the iPod she'd loaded for Mutt with a few songs.

Candy laughed and clapped her hands. "Hey, maybe you've got a magician in your blood somewhere. Not everyone can do that. So, where do you want to go?" She took a second to look at him, grinning at how he seemed pretty happy to be flying.

He laughed and shook his head, obviously pleased with the compliment. "Wouldn't surprise me. The stuff my mom and dad did before they split was pretty wild."

Being in the presence of the Arc of the Covenant is nothing to sneeze at. "I guess we could go to Sears Tower. It'll be easy enough to spot."

Chicago was definitely earning its billing at the Windy City, though, so Mutt wasn't sure he could keep control all the way there.

"Really? What'd they do?" She pulled her knees to her chest, fiddling with the iPod. She thought he was cute, but she'd rather die than betray her boyfriend. Candy also understood that friends came in lots of varieties, some of them male. Mutt was a really nice guy, and he could fly a glyph - no way was she going to let the awkwardness of their first conversation come between them.

"Sure! I've never seen it." She put on an older song, something by the Four Tops. Maybe he'd even recognize it, though she wasn't sure when it had come out. "If it's too windy, try flying over it or under it. I can take over if you want me to, just tell me."

"Alright. Uh, from what I hear, Indy and my mom were hunting down some artifact the Nazis wanted. Some kind of religious thing, couldn't get them to say what. They found it, and it apparently killed an entire platoon of 'em. they only survived because they closed their eyes."

He shrugged. "Six months later, they didn't talk again until a month or so ago. It was kind of crazy."

He shrugged. "Where are you living? You're not alone too, are you?" He figured she wouldn't be living with her boyfriend, since that was pretty taboo.

"Wow." Candy's eyes widened. "That's way more intense than anything I've ever done, or even heard of doing. And I flew one of these into a Nazi camp." She shook her head at the memory. Getting shot wasn't something she wanted to repeat, but if it came to it, she would.

"Sort of like my parents, but they live together. So it makes them not talking a lot more awkward." She chuckled bitterly, then perked up when he asked her about where she was living. Her cheeks went a tiny bit red and she shrugged. "I replaced the princess of Belgium. Well, one of them. I think the fifth or sixth in line for the throne, and they really wanted me to come back with them. I was brought into London, and I really didn't feel like moving again, so I made them let me stay there. Then I decided I wanted to live closer to my boyfriend, so I sort of moved in with him. I'm in Miami now."

"Oh wow. That's really brave. I don't know that I would have been able to do that."

He had a brand new respect for her coolness and listened eagerly to her talk. "Nobody cares that you're living together? I think that's going to be harder to deal with than all the magic and shit."

Though, really, the fact that his dormmate was a black guy from Michigan going for neurosurgery degree had tipped him off to the changes a lot earlier.

"They had my boyfriend hostage. He's... really powerful, moreso than me, and you know what the Nazis did to people like that." She shook her head and sighed. "I got shot. I need to learn how to be better with a gun, in case that comes up again. I'm taking lessons, actually. I just hate being that weak girl that needs help with things."

She looked at him, and smiled. "Things have changed since you were around, huh. Let me see. Um. It's still sort of odd that we're living together - I'm only sixteen - but not as weird as you'd think. People are waiting to get married, and living with someone you're not married to is pretty common. So's divorce." She tried to think about other things, and she facepalmed. "And there's lots of sex on TV. Lots."

The last one made him blink. "Whoa. That's kinda freaky. I can't imagine someone wanting to watch people. . . you know."

He blushed furiously. "There's lots of good changes, though. The typewriter thing is pretty neat, and must save a bunch on ink and paper. And there doesn't seem to be as much racism, which is pretty cool."

He would rebuild his tough guy image later. Right now he was still learning his way around.

"You'd be surprised. On TV, it's not the whole... thing, but there's movies where... yeah." She was beet red, and she shook her head. "Not that I'd know, but my brothers... yeah. Um." She laughed and was glad that he was blushing as well.

"Computers are awesome. They've really made the world more connected. You can have friends from all over because of them. And there's still some, but nothing like it used to be. And women can do a lot more stuff - be executives, doctors." Candy was obviously happy about that fact. She couldn't imagine just being a housewife.

"My mom shoulda lived in this time, then. Not that she let anyone tell her what to do or anything. I definitely got my stubbornness from her."

HE chuckled, and thought the glyph us as a strong gust of wind blew them.

"I don't know where I got my stubbornness from. I'm not really close to my parents. Not anymore." She shrugged and looked at her hands, then grinned at him when he took the glyph up. "Nice. You're good at this."

"What are the King and Queen of Belgium like? I've never met anyone like that before."

He smiled at her. "And thanks. I'm pretty good at driving things. Pretty good at anything I really put my mind too, honestly."

"The King is nicer than my real father. Old. The Queen's sort of what you'd expect a queen to be, sort of fussy and girlie. Not me at all. She wanted me to wear skirts constantly. I don't think I've worn a skirt except to my aunt's wedding. That was when I was ten." She laughed and shrugged. "There's a lot of relatives, though. I sort of felt bad when I didn't remember their names, but it's not me that knows them."

She turned the iPod up a little, dangling a leg out of the glyph. She was comfortable with his ability to drive, and it wasn't like they were going to get shot out of the sky. "So, what'd you do before you got brought here?"

"Then I guess it's a good thing they let you come to America then. it sucks being around people who don't really understand where you're coming from."

He dreads meeting his own new parents.

"I worked on motorcycles, helped keep the house from falling down around my ears, and fought with Indy about whether I should finish school or not. Not exactly the most exciting life ever."

"Yeah. I've never been a princess, I don't know how to dress nice or curtsy or any of that stuff. I'm just a tomboy from Chickentown, Minnesota who got put in some crazy situations."

She poked him in the ribs. "Hey, you fought aliens. Don't sell yourself short."

He laughed and poked her back. "Hey now, I'm ticklish and controlling the flying vehicle. And, honestly, I just kinda stared at 'em, until the crazy Soviet lady started screaming and the walls got sucked into an alternate dimension."

"Oh, you shouldn't have told me you're ticklish. When we get to the ground, you're so screwed." She chuckled and squirmed herself.

When he talkeda bout staring at the aliens, she laughed. "You know, I did the same thing when I saw the Fugit Brothers, so don't feel too badly. Ugh." Just mentioning them sent shivers down her spine.

Lo and behold, the Sears Tower.

Candy laughed at her new nickname. "You should be! I have three older brothers, so I give a mean Indian burn." She cackled in what she hoped was a menacing way, then blinked when the tower came into view.

"That's beautiful. Especially from up here."

He nodded, taking it all in. "Wow. It's really awesome." The ship moved idly around it, taking it all in. "I can't believe how tall it is."

Candy was looking for a place to land. "Land over there, that looks safe enough." She pointed at an office park, where hopefully the glyph wouldn't be spotted. "We can eat while we're here in the city."

He nodded and sailed toward the park, going a little slower than was really necessary, since he'd never landed one before.

Down was much easier to think of than up, so the glyph landed with a bit of a bump. "Sorry."

Candy laughed a bit. "Don't worry about it. The first time I flew one, three women summoned me to another island so fast, it was going upside down with me still in it. That thing crashed pretty bad. That was good."

She slung her bag over her shoulders and hopped out of the glyph, turning off the iPod. "What kind of food do you like, anyway? I've got really boring tastes."

"Ouch, that sounds like fun." He noted, wincing sympathetically. "Oh! There's an awesome Indian restaurant close to the campus. I went there yesterday, and their lamb is the best thing I've eaten since I got here."

He hadn't seen much of the world, but he'd traveled to many far off land on his stomach.

She blinked, eyes widening. "I've never had lamb. Mom was sort of a grilled chicken or meatloaf' kind of cook. Honestly, I think I've eaten the same three things over and over my whole life." She decided to be a gustatory daredevil, and nodded. "Let's do that. First we have to get downstairs. Can you be sneaky?"
