Who: Henry Townshend and Solvei Samuels
What: Taking a tour of the diner, then heading out for some patrolling.
Where: Starts at Sol’s bakery.
When: Starts off early afternoon on Friday.
Warnings: Probably violence against demons, vampires, etc. in the patrol section of the post.

Henry enjoyed these portkey things. Fast travel without the need of horrendously long security lines was a stroke of absolute genius. That was the part of being a photojournalist he’d always dreaded. Not the flying itself, he had no problem with that. It was the getting up at four in the morning to make a seven-thirty flight that bugged him. And he loved explaining his photography equipment to the guys working the X-Ray machines. Occasionally he’d get a guy that knew enough about photography to recognize Henry’s gear and let it slide on by as normal, but those were few and far between.

Not that he needed photo gear now. He still had it, hell, he’d updated his collection since finding out he’d replaced a rich actor, but for a trip like this he definitely didn’t need any. He was also glad he didn’t have to find a way to hide his weapons from security beyond the simple concealment under clothes or in the one bag he carried.

There were no guns. Solvei had made the request and he was going to honor it. Besides, she had a point, guns didn’t do a whole lot to monsters. What he did have were two knives, both blessed (it was amazing what a priest was willing to bless immediately after a hefty donation to the church) hidden in his boots, and a crossbow, and bolts for it, hidden between the top and bottom layers of clothes in his bag. He would also be picking up a hand-axe after getting to New York, but before the patrol.

It never hurt to be too careful. Or maybe that was the paranoia the Innsmouth trip had caused showing up. Either way, he brushed thoughts of Dagon and cultists and eldritch horrors aside for the moment, heading out into New York City and hailing a cab like a pro. He’d been here a few times, and knew most of the basics. He gave the cabbie the address to his hotel and then sat back, relaxing while the cabbie drove through the less-than-relaxing New York traffic.

After that it was a simple matter of checking in, heading up to his room, and unpacking. All in all, it only took him a few hours, into the early afternoon. Not bad time at all. Once finished, he whipped out his cell phone and dialed the number Solvei had given him. “Hey, it’s Henry,” he would say when she answered, in a friendly tone. “Just wanted to let you know I'm here. Do you want me to head over now?" In truth he was pretty eager to go over there. Not because it was a bakery (though he did enjoy baked goods) but because he didn't have many real friends in this world. Lots of people he knew from the boards, but very few actual friends besides Dean. This meant that increasing that pool of friends, even by one, was an important thing for him.

Henry noticed the haunted look and the more quiet tone and put two and two together. While he'd never had a responsibility or "sacred duty", he was the type to always feel responsible for, well, everything. He understood how she'd feel because it was how he'd feel in the same situation. "Hey," he started softly, and reached across the table to place a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Nobody expects you to be perfect. Even Superman isn't perfect. You did the best you could, and that's all anyone can ask for."

He pondered that for a few moments, his brow creasing in thought. "...Y'know, I bet a Range Rover doing eighty could turn their smiles into frowns." He'd never suggest that for stopping a human, but a demon that feasts on children...well, he just didn't see a moral issue in hitting something like that with some good ol' vehicular manslaughter.

This was one of the reasons why Solvei liked Henry. He just seemed to get her in a way most people didn't. She knew that she couldn't save them all. That didn't mean that she didn't try or feel guilty when she failed. "Yeah, I guess."

"Interesting thought. Can't say that I really am against it." She smiled a little at him then.

"Do you have anywhere where you would like to patrol tonight? Central Park usually has a lot of action but we're more likely to get seen by someone else. There are the docks and North and South Cove that are more isolated. That's where I broke up the pack of demons. Um, then there is the usual cemeteries which are always dead of humans. Pardon the pun. But usually there are fledgling vamps there." She really didn't have a preference. Whatever Henry was in the mood for and what he thought he was capable of doing was fine with her.

"No guessing, Solvei," he told her, smiling a little. "You did the best you could. Sometimes there's nothing you can do about the way things play out." It was the unfortunate truth that sometimes, no matter how hard you work, you just couldn't save everyone. He'd even tried with Walter, tried to save that kernel of goodness in him.

"Maybe I'll start driving around at night with a Range Rover." He grinned for a moment before chuckling a little at the thought. He wondered what kind of headline that would make the next day. Or better yet, explaining to the mechanics why there's always some strange dents and goo in the grille!

"Hmm..." Central Park did sound exciting, and possibly the better choice if Solvei wanted to avoid any more Sre'Taedrik demons. There was definitely the big problem of it being an oft-used public place, and he could just imagine it if someone had a camera phone and snapped a picture of the two of them fighting people. Either they'd think it was some new movie being filmed on the sly, or something even worse. It would also publicize Solvei's presence, which seemed like something she was trying to avoid. "Tell you what, either the Cove or Central Park. You decide."

Shrugging at him she smiled a little and nodded. She knew he was right but she couldn't help how she was.

"That might be kinda an expensive way to do things though. Replacing front ends on Range Rovers can't be cheap. You could just buy an old Chevy with a snow plow or cattle guard. Probably work just as good." She couldn't help her roots of growing up in rural Indiana.

"Well, then, in that case we can swing by both." She raised her eyebrows at him in question to see if that was okay with him too.

He knew it might not convince her, but he knew that in times like that he'd need support and wanted to make sure she knew she had his. It was funny how he could give her this advice even though he knew, if it were him, he would be feeling exactly the same way. He was strange like that, better at giving advice to others than taking his own.

"Now there's a thought," he chuckled, although he was actually serious. The plow idea certainly conjured up an image. "Attach stakes all over he plow, maybe soak them in holy water for added effect...that, I think, would come in handy for vampire riot control." After a moment, he added, "Or ritual control, I guess. You never see vampires having genuine, Public Enemy-style riots." His brow furrowed a little, wondering if maybe that had happened before and just never been reported as such. "Or am I just missing it?"

He nodded and took a sip from his bottle of water. "Sounds good to me." He'd never really done a patrol before, so he wasn't entirely sure how to go about planning one, but this didn't sound like a bad idea.

"Sounds like your a natural for weapon accessory Henry. I knew a guy once who had a truck that was set up kinda similar to that actually. But, instead of a snow plow he had a great big huge stake planted on the hood and little ones everywhere else. He had a few people in the back that usually rode with him with crossbows, swords, axes, stuff like that."

There was one thing that she was kinda hesitant to ask him to do. That was, to go shopping with her. Usually if you mentioned the phrase 'go shopping' to a guy they'd turn away in terror. She only had a very limited arsenal so far and she was kinda hoping that he wouldn't mind going with her. In her history, at least being with Dean, the only kind of shopping that he didn't really mind doing was for weapons. She hoped that Henry'd be the same way.

"Got a favor to ask of you. Since we have time to kill and all. You wanna come with me to shop for weapons since I hardly have any? If you don't, it's cool. We can meet later or something if you have something else you need to do.

"That sounds like a pretty effective setup," Henry nodded. "The only thing wrong with both my idea and his setup is that neither are exactly inconspicuous." He chuckled a little at the thought of a traffic cop sitting on the side of the road as something like that drove by. They'd be great for dealing with vampires, but he wasn't sure if testing the cops like that was worth the risk.

Henry was apparently one of the few guys that didn't have an aversion to shopping. He could understand why most guys didn't like to do it, but it didn't bug him. Maybe he was just odd. "Sure, I'll come along." Not only did he not mind the shopping, it would also be a good idea for him to get to know a little more about the kinds of weapons that were effective against the various different types of supernaturals out there. He had no clue where to even start looking for weapons, however, so he hoped she knew of a place to go for that.

"He lived in a bad part of Los Angeles at the time. The cops really didn't even want to go there. They kinda let him do his thing, at least when it came to killing vamps and demons." She'd only heard about it after the fact but she had heard of it being done before.

"Cool. There is a store in China town. They also sell blessed items there. Or we could always stop by a temple or if you're only into Christian based blessed items we can stop by a Catholic church. We'll probably have to pay some dough at one of those though." Sol usually had Buddhist monks bless her items. Just because they were more excepting of her and what she did.

It really didn't take much to learn to do it yourself but it was something that Sol really didn't have an interest in learning. "Let me just go grab a bag for after I buy stuff." She didn't really want to have to be carrying weapons out in the open after she bought them. The cops tended to frown upon that.

Oh man, as if the people in places like that needed vampires added to their already difficult lives. That couldn't have been pleasant. "Well, good to know that they had enough sense to let him handle things." God knew they would bungle it if they tried. Plus that would introduce the corruptible cops to perhaps the most potent form of temptation there was: Immortal life.

"Doesn't matter to me," he chuckled. "As far as I'm concerned, a blessing is a blessing is a blessing." He shrugged and leaned back, taking another sip from his water. "We can go with whichever you prefer."

He nodded. "No problem."

Sol laughed a little at his multiple blessing speech and said, "I'll be right back." Then she ran up the stairs and grabbed a bag for weapons, a jacket with her stake in the inside pocket (just in case), and her keys and wallet. She came down the stairs and said to Henry, "Just gotta tell my workers that I'll be gone for a while."

So far all of her workers were pretty nice. She thought that they found her a little strange even though that was something that she was used to. No one had mentioned the bruises that she had the last few days and she was glad that she didn't have to explain anything to them. Well, more like lie to them.

After coming out from the back of the bakery she said, "I'm ready. Do you want to walk or take a cab?"

While Solvei got her bag, Henry finished off his water and tossed it into the nearest trash can. Then he shouldered his laptop bag and headed outside to wait for her. He was pleasantly surprised that no paparazzi were showing up. Apparently his precautions before his trip down worked. That was for the best, especially given what they would be doing tonight. Having paparazzi tag along on that would be...disastrous was the first word that came to mind.

When she came out, he listened to her question before pondering it for a moment. "Well, walking is always nice to clear your head, but the cab could probably get us there faster. Which do you want to do?" Truthfully it didn't matter much one way or the other to him.

"Let's take a cab. It's kinda a long walk. I'm sure we can go for a walk some other time. Or on the way back if you want." Sol was able to hail a cab easily enough. This was the first time that she'd taken one yet.

Solvei stuck to small talk on the way there because she was sure whatever they could talk about might make the cabbie a little uncomfortable. Henry seemed to get the picture about that right away. When they pulled up to the weapons shop Sol paid the cabbie and they got out of the car.

"I haven't been in this place yet but the website was pretty cool. I might get a really cool axe that I saw if they have it."

Henry completely understood the need for discretion. So when Solvei started up the small talk in the cab, he went along with it. The last thing either of them needed was a cab driver thinking they were insane, especially if he recognized Henry as the big Hollywood actor. That was not something he needed to see in the tabloids.

He chuckled at her comment about the axe. "Axes come in handy." No, he did not just make a bad pun. Not at all. He was just referring to his own experience with an axe, and while it wasn't a battle-axe, it was still a very good weapon.

Sol giggled a little at the pun that he did not intend to make. Then when they stepped inside the shop her mouth dropped open a little bit at all the shiny weapons and cool stuff to look at. The shop smelled strongly of Asian incense. On the walls hung pretty much any kind of sword or weapon you could imagine.

There were cases filled with daggers and ninja looking weapons. There were shelves with more magical looking weapons and charms. Solvei decided instantly that she liked this place. Then a very old man came out from the back. Solvei felt some sort of power immediately radiating off of him. "A slayer and a man who is a warrior against the darkness. Welcome." Sol's eyes went wide. By now, nothing should really surprise her.

"Hi. I'm Solvei and this is Henry. We've come to do some browsing." She tried to shrug it off that this man pegged her for a slayer without even batting an eye. She didn't sense any sort of malevolence from him, just power.

"We'll see about that. I'm sure I have just the thing for both of you. Give me a few moments." With that, he went into the back.

Solvei looked at Henry. "Seems to know who we are. I think he seems alright though. You feeling the same vibe?"

Henry was all set to continue making small talk and little quips while they shopped. Even though they were weapon shopping, it felt normal, and he was ready to act the way he normally did when he went shopping with Eileen.

All set, that is, until the old man identified him.

Luckily the old man turned right away, or he'd have caught Henry's hand moving towards his laptop bag. In his experience, strangers that knew who you were didn't bode well. Then again, he'd also grown more paranoid after Innsmouth. His mind briefly flashed back to the horrific visage of Dagon bursting up from the ground, and the screams as people tried to dodge it's massive claw swipes, the conventional ammunition doing absolutely nothing against it...

Henry didn't even realize the color had drained from his face, or that his eyes were now as wide as saucers. It took an impressive force of will, but he pushed the memory to the back of his mind and took a deep breath, his face returning to a more controlled appearance as he let the breath out. "Yeah. Yeah, he seems okay." He hoped it sounded more convincing than it felt.

Solvei laughed just a little at Henry's expression. She wasn't laughing at him but she was more laughing at how unconvincing that what he said sounded. Sol was kind of used to people with lots of power knowing who she was or at least that she was something. She'd grown used to it over the years. Apparently, Henry never had that opportunity. "That didn't sound very convincing. I think he's legit and that he's going to find something pretty cool for both of us."

Sol also hoped that Henry knew that if anything tried to go after him it'd have to go through her first. She didn't think that was going to happen. Not here at least.

She turned around to start browsing. "Oooo. Magnetic chalk. Have you ever seen this stuff before?"

Henry's hand remained where it was for another moment, and then he let out a little sigh and relaxed, letting his hand fall back to his side. "Sorry. Last time a guy knew who I was before I knew him, not counting anything vortex-related, was back home with Walter." He stuck his hand in his pocket to keep it from wandering back to the bag with the crossbow in it.

He glanced around, impressed at all the fine weaponry in the place, before Solvei's comment caught his attention. "Magnetic chalk?" He moved to stand next to her to allow himself a better view. "Can't say as I have. I've heard of it, but I always figured it was like those gimmicky x-ray glasses advertised in the backs of comic books."

"It's okay Henry. I understand." Some times the past was something that you never really got over. "It's better to be suspicious than hurt." She shrugged trying not to make a big deal out of it.

"It's for drawing pentagrams and power circles and the like. It's a lot easier for something not to get in or out with magnetic chalk. It tends to stay put a lot better than the regular run of the mill chalk or using sand or something like that. De... my fiance back home told that to me anyway." She'd almost said his name and since she knew that Henry was friends with him she didn't want for him to get involved with it. Even though the Dean here was a different Dean, she thought it'd be best if he didn't know. Knowing how smart Henry was, she figured it'd only be a matter of time before he did figure it out.

Solvei continued to browse and look around. There was a lot of cool stuff in this shop. She figured that she'd definitely be a repeat customer.

Henry nodded, smiling a little at that. It was good to know people here that knew how to be supportive without asking millions of questions. It wasn't really an experience he wanted to relive, especially since he so often did in his nightmares. "I'm just paranoid," he muttered, shaking his head a little.

De? Those were the first two letters of this guy's name? Henry's mind was constantly working, which was sometimes not a good thing. In this case, it started running through a list of possible names. Derek, Devon, Demian, Dennunzio... And then he started thinking about what kind of man a Slayer could conceivably fall for. He sincerely doubted it could be a guy who had no clue how to defend himself. Right there is where it clicked. Dean.

Well, he was going to do exactly one thing: Stay out of the middle of it. No one was at fault here, there was nothing that could really be fixed in the traditional sense, so there was nothing for him to do at all. Anything he could even try to do would likely cause more drama and cause him to lose both of them as friends, both of which were unpleasant outcomes.

Instead, he just fiddled with the chalk a bit before tossing her a meaningful glance. This glance clearly said "oh I get it now" and then he glanced at the swords on the wall. "Always wanted to be King Arthur." Which, after that meaningful glance, kind of meant "and now that I get it we'll just pretend I didn't".

Solvei could practically see the wheels turning in Henry's head after she had slipped and said the first part of Dean's name. She also saw the dawning in his eyes when he had figured it out. If ever there was any doubt on whether or not Henry and her would be friends it was cemented in her head when he didn't press for confirmation on who she was talking about. A silent agreement had somehow passed between the two of them that no words were needed right now. She was grateful of that.

"King Arthur? Yeah, that would be kinda cool. She pulled a claymore off the wall and held it in front of her like it didn't weigh more than a few ounces. "Think the Scots either had something right of very wrong when they decided to start making these." She swung it and thought it was too bulky for anything she'd fight these days. She put it back on the wall.

That was when the old man came out from the back. He carried two things in his hands. Stepping closer to them he held what looked to be a small medicine bag in one hand and a scythe in the other hand.

"Slayer, this scythe has killed many vampires. It is my gift to you." Sol looked at him confused. "I'll pay you for it." He shook his head.

"Warrior? This necklace I made myself. It will guard you against death and possession as long as you wear around neck." He held it out to Henry and Sol wondered if he'd take it or not. "My gift to you as well."

Henry figured that if she wanted to talk about it, she'd bring it up. He'd be happy to talk about it with her if she did, but it wasn't his business to bring up. She hadn't intended for him to know who it was, for good reason most likely, and he was going to just let her deal with it how she wanted to deal with it.

"Well, yeah, but without the whole cheating with the best friend part," he chuckled, shaking his head. He watched as she handled the claymore, impressed with the fact that she was handling it as if it was nothing. "Maybe they were fighting sentient brick walls." He'd always thought claymores were huge. He didn't dare even try to take one himself, there was no way he'd be able to handle it in a way that didn't end with accidental limb severing.

Henry looked at it for a second and then reached out and took it. He bowed his head, smiling. "Thank you." He searched his mind for a second for an appropriate response and then hit on one. "You honor me with your gift." He placed the bag around his neck, patting the bag softly once it was around his neck.

"Yeah, that part wasn't so good." She smiled and still was playing with the sword. She better stop or she'd end up breaking something. "That'd just dull up the blade though. Guess they don't really have to be completely sharp. It's almost like they're a two-for. Melee and sharp. Maybe they did have something?"

"Most welcome." The man told Henry with a bow.

Smiling she said, "Thank you." To the old man. Impulsively she took out one of her cheesy business cards for the bakery and gave him one. "If ever you need any help or hear of anyone that needs help give me a call. Or if you just need some donuts, we deliver." He nodded and said, "Very great sweet tooth I have. I will not hesitate to call." Sol grinned at the man and added, "I want to buy some of your magnetic chalk and that hand axe." She said pointing to the one that she had seen on the website.

"Also, do you sell carrying cases?" She gestured to the scythe and the man nodded. Her backpack definitely would not hold it without part of it sticking out.
