Who: Jade Sha Cortez and Sha Gojyo (and a little bit of Libby)
What: Talking. Angst, probably.
Warnings: Angst.

Jade knew something was up. When she stayed at her dads' house it was always planned. Her mom had never told her to pack a bag right when she got home from school. She hadn't even eaten dinner. Not that she minded. Kai was probably cooking something amazing.

She was a little confused when her mom took a different exit than usual. "Where are we going?" she asked.

"To your dad's," Libby said, frowning. "He needs to talk to you." Gojyo had wanted to tell Jade in person, and Libby didn't want to take away from that.

Jade could tell that her mom was upset, and she didn't push the subject. She fiddled with the strap of her luggage a little and looked out the window, looking at all of the houses and people. When they arrived at the house she had never seen before, she got out of the car, her bag slung over her shoulder. The house was tiny compared to the old one, and was in disrepair. Gojyo was sitting on the front steps. This was really weird.

Libby got out of the car with Jade. She didn't want to make a scene, but it didn't seem right to just drive away as soon as Jade closed the car door.

Gojyo got up quickly and walked over to the girls. He was so nervous and so... he just didn't even know what these feelings really were. He gave Jade a big hug before offering to take her bag and pulling it up over his own shoulder. He looked over at Libby and smiled a little. He kinda looked down awkwardly before approaching her for an awkward hug. He knew there was history and hated to make things awkward with that, but hell, things were kinda beyond acting normal right now. "Thanks. Do you... Would you like to come inside?" He hadn't been planing on offering, but maybe it would be easier with her there. At least it would be a parent that Jade had grown up with except the one who didn't show up until all the hard part was done with.

Jade hugged him back, squeezing him tightly before letting him take her bag. "Hi Dad," she said.

Libby hugged him back, patting his shoulder awkwardly. She wasn't sure what the protocol was here. She knew he wasn't her Gojyo--she wasn't even sure Gojyo had ever been hers--but it was still complicated. It was harder than it should have been. After a few moments, she nodded. "I could stay for a little while." She could give them space.. Maybe make dinner in the kitchen while they talked, and then she would be there in case they needed someone trained in grief counseling.

After her parents had hugged, Jade grabbed Gojyo's free arm and hugged it before leading him inside.

He looked down at Jade as she lead him inside. She was his angel, so bright and wonderful. As long as he had his little girl he would be okay. He had to be.

He opened the door and lead them in. The place was a mess, and he looked a little embarrassed. "Haven't really had much of a chance to do anything with the place."

He put the bag down beside the couch, probably the nicest thing that could be seen in the apartment, and gestured that they could sit down. "Do you guys need anything? Food? Something to drink?" He felt so lost in this place. So lost in what he was doing.

Jade looked back up at him, giving him a small smile. She knew something was really wrong, and thought it had to do with Kai. This place wouldn't look like this if Kai was here. They wouldn't even be here. She didn't think they'd been fighting, or anything, and couldn't imagine Kai kicking Gojyo out.

"I'm okay," Jade said, sitting down. She reached up to take her dad's hand, pulling him to sit down.

"You two sit," Libby said, petting Jade's hair lightly. "I'm going to peek in the kitchen." Ana would be at work for a while.

Gojyo smiled a little at Libby in thanks before looking down at the ground for a moment. He looked up at Jade, keeping a hold of her hand. Worry showed on his face as much as he tried to keep it away. Lines on his forehead that had never been there before and a general weariness that Jade hadn't seen.

"Hakkai... is gone, Jade. He vanished." He didn't know what he was doing. If he was saying the right words. Hakkai was always so much better at this kind of thing than he was. He always just let him handle it.

Libby made her way to the kitchen before Gojyo told her. She was still close enough to hear if they called for her. He didn't have a lot in the kitchen, but she could make the most of it.

Jade had known something was wrong, but she didn't know how wrong. Even though all of the signs were there, she hadn't seen it coming. Her face fell. She wanted to start sobbing; she wanted to scream... But she had to be strong for her dad. "G-gone?" she just barely managed to echo, her voice shaking.

Hakkai had been there forever. She'd always had him to go to. He'd been the closest thing Jade had had to a father for fourteen years. He was permanent. She always knew that, no matter what kind of changes there were, Hakkai was always the same. He even looked the same. When she was suddenly thrown back in time, her mos looked so much younger, but Hakkai was the same. He was always the same. A rock. And now...

Tears started falling down her cheeks.

Gojyo watched her as she absorbed it. "I'm so sorry, honey." He put an arm on her shoulder, unsure if she'd want to be held or want to get away. He knew when he was real upset sometimes he just wanted to get away from people.

Jade turned toward him, curling up and burying her head in his chest, clutching onto him. All this time. For so many years she had hoped and prayed that her dad would come back, but she never even thought to pray that Kai wouldn't disappear. She should have been prepared.. Her friends had lost their parents. She just never thought it would happen to her.

He hugged her close, kissing the top of her head. It tore him up inside seeing his little girl like this. Kai was more of a father to her than he had ever been. Yet he was here and Kai wasn't... It wasn't really fair.

She clung to him tightly, trying to pull herself back under control. Every time she got close to stopping the tears, she just thought of him again, and how unfair it was.

Maybe he'd come back. Maybe someday he'd come back. Her dad did. Kai could, too. She raised her head a little, her red eyes looking up at him. "Don't leave, Daddy."

Gojyo smiled a little sadly. "I won't. I will do everything in my power to stay next to you, I promise."

Jade leaned back into him, practically in his lap. She sniffled, her cheek wet against his chest. She was only fourteen. She shouldn't have to deal with this.

She didn't have to ask if she could stay. Her bag was packed. Her mom knew already that she'd be staying the night.

Libby had made some toasted sandwiches and soup. She was in the kitchen, debating whether or not to come out. It was quiet. She didn't want to intrude. But she didn't want to just abandon Jade if her little girl needed her. She eased into the hallway, looking into the living room. Jade's face was turned away from her, but Gojyo could see Libby from where she stood. She looked at him with concern, silently asking him if he wanted her to stay or go.

Gojyo held her, pulling her up closer. He tried so hard to hide his own pain and holding her he could almost forget.

He looked over her head to where Libby was standing. He smiled at her a little. He didn't really know how to answer her concern. He didn't know for sure if he could handle it by himself. He didn't know if she would need her mother. He thought he could handle it. He thought it would be all right.

Libby walked over to the pair and pet Jade's hair lightly. She leaned down to kiss the top of her daughter's head. "I love you, sweetheart," she said. She looked to Gojyo. "I'm just a phone call away," she said softly to him. "I'll be here in ten seconds."

Jade looked up at her mom and nodded, wiping at her cheeks. She didn't say anything, but she kissed her mom's cheek before leaning back against her dad.

Gojyo forced a smile as he looked up at Libby. "Thank you. For everything."

He just held Jade silently, letting her get it all out and not trying to push her into doing anything.

Libby nodded and headed for the car. It was starting to get dark already, and Ana would be heading home. She checked to make sure her phone was on before she started the car.

Jade sniffled, waiting for her mom to leave. Pushing back the tightness in her throat, she poked at her dad's chest. "Cry already, stupid," she said, her voice weak.

Gojyo looked at Jade a little surprised. He really had forgotten. It had all been too important, getting to a new place, taking care of everything. Letting people know. Taking care of his little girl. He hadn't had time to cry. He didn't want his little girl to see him cry. He'd watched his mother cry too many times and was unable to do anything, and he didn't want to do that to her, but once she told him to... He smiled a little weakly. Smiling was always his defense, but this time it was more of a real smile, almost thanks for letting him, and tears just started falling down his cheeks. He put his chin on her head and held her and let himself cry. Small sobs came out, making him shake as he held her close.

Jade was crying again, too. She was comforted by him crying too. It probably shouldn't work that way, but it was good to know someone else was hurting as much as she was. She could let it all out.

She cried for what felt like hours. She was exhausted. There was nothing left in her. She couldn't even lift her eyelids. Her breathing was slow and even. Slowly, she was drifting off to sleep.

Gojyo tried to remember a time he really allowed himself to cry like this. It had been such a long time. He felt her start to calm down until her breathing was slow. All he really wanted to do was follow her into sleep, but he knew if he slept like this he wouldn't be able to stand any time tomorrow. He carefully picked her up and carried her into her bedroom. He noticed that it looked neater than when he last saw it and he smiled, silently thanking Libby. He laid her down on the bed, and covered her with a blanket before laying down next to her. He didn't want to leave her alone. He hadn't sure if he would get to sleep, but it was only mer minutes before sleep overtook him.
