The reason why Wylie had been assigned to this mission wasn't because she had asked nicely, or even begged. No, the evidence for choosing the best pilot on the ship was in the pounding sheets of rain and crackling flashes of lightning that flanked the shuttle as it descended into the lower atmosphere of the planet. The elements were against them exactly when they needed things to be in their favor. The Endeavour had already waited long enough to hear back from the first landing party, and delaying the second departure just because of a massive storm system wasn't going to help the situation any, even if their fate had already been sealed. The least they could do if that had been the situation was to investigate the circumstances before they were washed away in a flash flood. But whatever the case, Wylie was glad to have a chance to stretch her legs, even if it wasn't for a positive reason. Add on to the fact that she was an experienced flight controller, she was also trained in tactics and had defensive skills to aid the team. If she wasn't so damn good at sitting in a chair all day, she would've pursued a different line of work if that meant she could be on away missions more often. In fact, she suspected her mother would have given her a little more credit if she'd done so. Still, at this point in her career, she wouldn't ever fully trust anyone else to sit behind that console and take her ship out into deep space. It was already making her a little concerned that the captain was in the shuttle with her, leaving the ship was in the hands of the newer crew members. Though there had been no readings of any other warp-capable starships within the system, that didn't mean a Klingon warbird couldn't just swoop in out of nowhere while they were gone. There was no point in being paranoid, though. She had her own task to worry about, and that was making sure they landed on the surface in one piece. It wasn't a smooth trip, considering the high winds as they cut through the clouds, but turbulence had been anticipated and was minimized to the best of her ability. So there was a bump here, and a shudder there, and the occasional swerve that shifted whatever wasn't strapped down in the aft, but nothing serious. She lowered them in enough to cruise above the ground, and soon enough, the waving plains of grass were within visible distance. And yet mysteriously, like all of the other circumstances of their crew's disappearance, there was no sign of the other shuttle from the open windows. Wylie frowned, momentarily splitting her attentions between the thruster controls and the navigational instruments. "Sir," the lieutenant turned around to look at the captain, "I've triple checked the coordinates, both ours and where the previous landing party had touched down. This is exactly where the other shuttle should be." |
