Patience was not familiar with the feeling of loneliness. She was accustomed to spending most of her day alone; had preferred it that way, before. The quiet company of her plants and the less quiet (but still non-human) company of her dog allowed her to get work done, to feel meditative, centered, and at peace. But the silence around her seemed empty, now.
Worse still, it was filled with a feeling of impending danger. War, perhaps. That, in particular, made Patience want to gather everyone she loved together and keep them safe. The feeling of uselessness, inability to actually do that, was wearing her out. The last few days had passed in almost as much of a daze as the days when she’d be coming out of the potion-induced fog she’d been under, which felt like ages ago now.
She had spent the morning in the garden, but her mood had driven her inside earlier than usual for tea. Now she was sitting on the porch with a warm cup of tea going cold in her hands, King curled up at her feet, and staring at nothing in particular, her mind far away and her expression blank.
------
It didn’t matter that Chastity and Patience weren’t as close as they’d once been when they were younger. Chas could still tell when her twin was down... sometimes she still just knew, even without really seeing her. Which was pretty much what led to Chas making her way down from the Manor with a box in her arms that was currently emitting faint squeaking noises.
Catching sight of her twin on the porch staring off into space with a blank expression, Chastity instantly frowned. She may not have been the best with emotions and with helping people, but when it came to her twin, she always tried. Of course, her attempts were usually rather awkward, but at least she tried?
Stepping up onto the porch, Chas held out the box to Patience, revealing the two orange kittens inside as she said simply (and a bit awkwardly), “Here. These are for you.” She paused as the kittens squeaked, and then added as an afterthought. “They’re from Bayleigh Crouch...”
------
At Patience’s feet, King was the first to react, ears pricked and nose quivering as it pointed at the box. Patience ordered him to stay, and he did, though it was obvious he was very curious about the contents of the box. She moved to stand, and remembered just in time to set aside her tea before it spilled completely over, though her hands were splashed. It was surprisingly cool; she must have been sitting here longer than she expected.
She wiped her hands on her skirt - it was covered in dirt already, a little tea wasn’t going to harm anything - and reached for the box, her expression lighting up somewhat when she saw the two tiny creatures inside. “Oh, they’re adorable,” she said, glancing up at her twin. King was starting to get to his feet, and she gave him a stern look before. “No, King. Where did they come from?”
------
Chastity had glanced at King for a moment to make sure he was staying still, but he was trained to listen to Patience well. So she turned her attention back to her twin, watching the way Patience’s expression lightened slightly at the sight of them. Maybe this had been a good idea. Shuffling in place slightly, Chas shrugged and said, “Dunno exactly... Bayleigh said she had them and she asked if you might want them. And I thought, well... that you might. So...” She shrugged again and finished, “I thought I’d surprise you with them.” She glanced down into the box, nose crinkling slightly at the sight of the kittens as she added, “They make a lot of noise.”
------
“Let’s take them inside,” Patience said, shifting the box carefully under one arm. She leaned down to scratch King’s ears without letting him near the box, and then led the way into the house, shutting the door behind them to keep her dog out. She set the box with the kittens in them on the table.
“Of course I’ll take them,” she said, her heart going out to the tiny little things that were looking up at her with interest. The orange of their fur reminded her of Fred’s hair, of the Weasleys, and she smiled, leaning down to carefully pick them both up. “Thank you. You don’t want one?”
She loved them both already, but she was more than happy to share with her sister. They had been able to agree on the dogs, though she wasn’t sure that Chastity would be interested in something this small.
------
Following her sister inside, Chas leaned against the nearest wall, arms crossed over her chest and one foot propped back against the wall. She was glad Patience was going to take the kittens, but at the question she made a face, “No. Kittens aren’t my thing. Too... tiny and squeaky and fuzzy. And helpless.” She hated things that were helpless. The only cats she liked were the ones like her inner animal, big and strong and majestic. Her dog was alright, of course, because he’d never really been that small and he’d grown fast.
There was something else she’d thought Patience might want to know, what was it? Oh, right. “One’s a boy and one’s a girl, by the way. Not sure which one...”
------
Patience smiled at her sister, slightly amused by the face she'd made. "You needn't take one then. I can take care of them both." She moved to sit down in the chair with them in her arms, and folded her legs to keep them in her lap. One of them curled sleepily against the crook of her knee; the other made a grab for her long hair and batted at it with tiny paws. She laughed and carefully shifted them to see which was which gender, and grinned. "The feisty one is the girl, and the sleepy one is the boy."
She'd have to decide how to name them, but that didn't need to happen right now. She dangled a string in front of the female to play with instead of her hair, and looked up at her twin. "How have you been?"
