Who: Merlin Stebbins and Orla Quirke
When: This Afternoon/Evening
Where: Diagon Alley, White Witch Weddings
What: Meeting the missus!
Rating: Maybe PG, maybe higher. Who knows how bad his mouth might get.
Status: Closed/ In Progress

His early afternoon had been terribly busy. First there was the accidental meeting of Miss Patil, then there was a burst of activity as a few witches had recieved their matches and were eager to get going on the arrangements. Merlin had to jump to work without much of a smoke break, though the break from smoking was good for him considering he had upped his intake of nicotine from all the dresses he'd been making lately. Charms were exploding that afternoon and magic was keeping the energy high, to the point where the witches kept saying how loud the buzz of magic was becoming.

"Then it's a day, girls," sighed Merlin at five and happily they left, one by one. Finally he was alone and it was then that he managed to remember the strawberries he brought that morning. The cooling charm was still working it's magic on the container of berries and he took them with him to sit outside and smoke his final fag while waiting for that girl he was supposed to meet.

Orla didn't really have any expectations in regards to who the Ministry paired her with; she only wanted them to not be mean. That was it. As simple as that. Merlin seemed nice enough, though perhaps his outward appearance was different than she had imagined, but she hardly paid attention to such things usually. He was courteous enough to perform a charm that got rid of the cigarette smell and that made him already seem nicer than others.

"You're taller than I thought," she found herself saying and then blushed lightly at how ridiculous that might have sounded. "I mean - I don't remember you from Hogwarts, so I didn't know exactly what you looked like so I kind of imagined it?" This was definitely an embarrassing way to start off a conversation. She always had been wretched at doing that with people she wasn't closest to.

"I'm sorry, I'm absolute rubbish at this -- it's nice to meet you?" she added a few seconds later and held her handout to him, hoping that he would just forget her you're taller than I thought comment.

Reddish hair. Her's was too dark, and there went Merlin.. thinking of Natalie of all people. Her hair was a lovely shade of almost red, wasn't it? What was she doing just now? Meeting her husband? His stomach felt tight at the thought. "Uhh... yeah. I'm tall. I hover. That's what everyone says, anyways."

Lame. Merlin's smile died a small bit as he fell into a quiet spot and then it went right back to being bright and wide. "It's really nice to meet you. I'm sorry though," then a frown. His face was getting a bit of a work out!

"I'm not sure we really should get married. What do you think?" It wasn't something people were having as options. Terry was marrying his girl. Harry Potter married his. Why was Merlin suddenly saying he couldn't? "I'm excited to meet you and really, blind dates are awfully fun.. it's just.. like. I don't think we're supposed to get married. Are you any good a divination?"

Well, this was certainly an awkward meeting. Orla's shoulders were slightly stiff and had her hands not been preoccupied with something (shaking Merlin's hand and holding onto the camera around her neck), they would have been shaking lightly. She hadn't expected to be that nervous, but she was. Meeting your alleged future husband apparently did that to you.

Orla did smile a bit at the 'I hover' comment, finding it more amusing than anything, but the smile fell when he announced that they shouldn't get married. She pulled her hand back. "We shouldn't?" Confusion etched itself across her face. Wouldn't that mean they would have to pay some ridiculous fine or even face being placed in Azkaban. She couldn't stand the thought of the latter, especially since she knew it would kill her father.

"I was rubbish at divinations. All I ever saw were the tea leaves and smoke in my crystal ball." It wasn't disappointment she was feeling because she honestly had no desire to get married, but apprehension at the consequences they could face it they didn't. "Wouldn't we get in trouble if we didn't? There's that fine and from what I've read, we could end up in Azkaban..."

He sighed heavily and rolled his shoulders back a bit. There was a horrible crick forming in between his shoulder blades and he was certain that it was going to spread along his spine until his whole back hurt. That was what anxiety did to him, it stiffened his bones and locked him up. "I don't mean to.. reject you. You're very pretty," he offered up. "I'd do it, really I would, but I can't. I really can't."

Now his chest felt weird, and his breath wasn't flowing so easily. It was choppy and hard for him to breathe in and out when his throat felt like it was closing up. "I can't do it. I was excited, I swear. I was, but I can't!!" Panic was flooding his very being and Merlin felt sick to his stomach.

"I'll pay for the fine. Everything. I'll talk to them.. I can't.. I'm.. I'm in love with my best friend." There it was, what he couldn't ever admit to himself until now. He was in bloody love with Natalie McDonald. He still couldn't breathe right and his eyes were watering up. Boys didn't usually cry, but Merlin feeling panicked was going to cry like a baby.

Rejection wasn't supposed to feel like this, like a huge weight had been lifted off her shoulders and deposited elsewhere. She had agreed to go through with the whole marriage thing only because she didn't want the person she was intended for to be stuck with paying a fine or winding up in Azkaban. So, she had agreed. But his reasons for, for lack of a better word, rejecting her were actually sweet. A light smile crossed her face and, even though she didn't know him really, she reached out and touched his arms.

"It's fine, really," she said, her voice calm now that she knew she wasn't going to be forced into something she didn't want to do. "Marriage should be about loving someone instead of being put together just to... mix our blood and make a future generation." Well that was odd talking about that and she blushed lightly. "You should - that is, I think you should be allowed to be with your best friend instead. To actually marry her instead."

"Whatever reprecussions there are from us not getting married... well, I'm not really sure how, but we can handle it." She only hoped she didn't wind up in Azkaban because of this.

"But what about Azkaban? I'd go there. But you.. you can't." So did that mean he'd marry her? No. He couldn't and he wouldn't. Merlin never felt so horrible in his entire life. The last time he felt this sick he had Dragon Pox. He felt guilty about the whole ordeal.

"She doesn't even know how I feel, but if she'd have me I'd marry her right now." He wiped at his eyes furiously and turned about so he was facing his store. In the window was a beautiful gown he had designed and now it was just like a ghost, haunting him, making him fear the ceremony he had come to love.

"Maybe I'll go to France."

Surely they wouldn't send her to Azkaban as well, especially since it was Merlin himself not wanting to marry her? But she knew that that wasn't the way it worked, regardless if she hoped and wished it was. The weight on her shoulders that she had momentarily gotten rid of was back and she curled her lip in between her teeth. What were they going to do?

"I hear it's nice this time of year," she mused, trying to lighten the situation up a little bit. "As for the girl you love, you should tell her. If we're going to risk paying a fine and eventually Azkaban, I'll feel a lot better about it knowing she knows you really fancy the trousers off her."
