Who invented paperwork? And deadlines? Because we need to have a talk.

I love my work, but this paper is making me crazy.

Thomas - Incidentally, this means it'll be late before I'm home.

True enough, Alex. Hey, tell me something-If you could go back to where you were from, would you? The first place, not the bar at the end of the universe or anything.

You mean before I got shot or where I walked into the bar from?

If I could go back to before I got shot and not have to go through that, I think I might. Going back to where I was before I walked in the first time? Knowing what I know now, probably not.

You got shot? That's a story I haven't heard yet, Alex.

Not really an exciting story. Drug dealer with an ego tried to kill me. He missed. Feds made him think otherwise.

For the record - it hurt. A lot.

Oh, I know how much getting shot hurts, no doubt. Been shot myself. Did the catch the fucker?

Don't know. Haven't been back there to find out.

Fair enough. And you haven't had troubles like that here, have you?

Not so far. And I hope I don't.

I hope you don't either. Nothing hurts more than a bullet, I get you there.

Yeah. A lot of emotional pain comes pretty close, but nothing burns through to your soul like a hot piece of lead. If you don't die, the pain is enough to make you wish you had.

What can I say. I got shot and my life got a lot more interesting. And complex.

Oh I get that. I died on the table twice when I was shot. It's one hell of a trip.

I honestly don't know a lot about what happened when I got shot - aside from being hit in the shoulder and seeing a friend hovering over me yelling things I couldn't hear.

You got shot in the shoulder, too? Shit, Alex, this is getting freaky. My right one. Internal damage, had me in the hospital for a while.

Freaky's a good word. Right shoulder. I know I was in the hospital for a while, because when I woke up I wasn't in New York anymore, I was in Rome.

I'm gonna hope that last part's different or this is going to be beyond freaky.

Alright, you got me beat there. Rome? How the hell did you end up there? That because of the drus dealer and all that?

No. The 'Rome' thing was because of a group of religious nuts who figured I'd be an excellent way to get their prized possession back. They were wrong.

Religious nuts? What did they want from you? The key to the fucking grail or something?

Their prize demon fighter apparently went missing or batshit or something. While I was out, they reprogrammed me into thinking that this demon fighter was my husband and that my name was Laura Harper. Funny thing, as it turns out, showing up at the bar at the end of the universe is a big part of why I know those five years was one hell of a lie. Especially considering it was really only three. I think.

Things are fuzzy now, because I don't pay much attention to that stuff anymore since it wasn't real.

Hot damn, Alex. That's some crazy shit! You mean to tell me you were brain washed? You win. I was just in hospital for a few weeks, got stitched up, saw to that and just went back to life as it was. No trips to Rome. So, you went to the bar after all that? How did you find out it was a lie?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Brainwashing only works as long as you believe what you've been told to be true. Going to the bar broke a lot of that up. There were three men there who looked like my 'husband', though one was shorter and has a bit more hair. Turns out, one of them actually was the man I was told was my husband, only he wasn't my husband and his name wasn't - whatever I was told it was... something Harper. Great kisser though.

Once the pieces were shaken loose, nothing holding the brainwashing web together and the 'real' stuff fell into place.
