Unfortunately.

Why would that be unfortunate?

The only aliens I've met are stupid.

Right, yeah, that'd do it, I guess.

Why not? Maker knows everything else seems to be.

Why would I think that? It was just a question. And not even an unreasonable one, given some of the strange things that are here. But then, I come from a place with dragons and demons and such, and most people here think those are impossible. One man's story is another man's reality, I guess.

The other person who replied got me a little testy, I guess. That's all. Dragons sound pretty awesome though.

Yeaaaaah, not so much when they're breathing fire at you. Awesome in the oh shit I'm about to die sense, maybe.

But no, definitely not a stupid question. Even if it had been, I ask way too many stupid questions to judge someone else for it.

So, awesome in the original sense of the word. I can appreciate that.

Anyway, I'm Lucy. And I'm new here.

[info]cheeseordeath
2011-07-17 08:02 pm UTC (link)
Exactly. How do you think that changed, anyway? From awestruck to the point of terror into oh, yay, that's good. Quite a ways for a word to go.

And I'm Alistair, nice to meet you. I haven't been here long myself, just long enough for the shock to start wearing off. What's it like where you're from?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]lucky_no_7
2011-07-17 08:07 pm UTC (link)
I have no idea, actually, etymology isn't really my strong suit.

And where I'm from is a lot like here, only we don't have superheroes wandering around with everybody else and nobody knows aliens are real, and the people who believe it are kind of a laughingstock.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]cheeseordeath
2011-07-17 08:10 pm UTC (link)
Mine either. Funny idea though. ...sorry, I babble a lot.

Huh, if that's the case, no wonder you were worried about sounding like an idiot. Probably you can worry about that less here given all the other strange things around. Something to be grateful for, anyway. Where I come from was nothing like this, at all. I think actually I'm not used to it so much as numb from the sheer number of new things. Really, aliens are almost the least of it. Airplanes are a lot more difficult.

I can understand that, I mean, once in a while I have to sit and wonder how it is they stay up. People can be pretty damn inventive.

What confuses me more than aircraft? Jello. And golf. Not for the same reasons.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]cheeseordeath
2011-07-17 09:00 pm UTC (link)
Exactly! It's this giant metal thing, as big as a building, and it can fly? At least dragons had wings, though I could never figure out how they were able to fly either. It was a lot of dragon for not very much wing.

I agree with you on golf, I can't understand that one either, though I hear that mini-golf is more amusing, whatever that is. Jello I haven't heard of at all. What's that?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]lucky_no_7
2011-07-17 09:06 pm UTC (link)
Bumblebees are the same way, they shouldn't be able to fly for size and shape versus wing power, but they do. And a lot of other things have wings but can't fly, like penguins and ostriches.

I've just never understood how someone could go: "You know what would be a fun game? Swinging this weighted stick at this little tiny ball to get it into a hole aaaaall the way over there."

Jello's a kind of food. Junk food, but still food.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]cheeseordeath
2011-07-17 09:34 pm UTC (link)
Huh, never noticed that about bees, but you're right. They're little fuzzballs with tiny wings. Nature is full of strange things.

I imagine it makes a nice satisfying thwack sound when you hit the ball. It's a lot of effort and equipment and walking just for a thwack sound, though.

Junk food? That's something I like about this place. We didn't have much where I came from, or at least I couldn't get at it. If I'm not careful I'll stuff myself so full of junk foods that they'll need an airplane to tug me to work.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Jello is ... well it's edible glue, basically, made from the same stuff: shaved horse hooves.

Which is why it baffles me, who thought: "Let's boil this up, add some fruit flavor and eat it!"? And why has everyone else gone along with it?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]cheeseordeath
2011-07-17 09:43 pm UTC (link)
Ah. Right. Nevermind, I suddenly don't have any urge to try that whatsoever. I'll stick to these Snickers things. Much better.

...why would anyone make edible fruit-flavored horse hooves?!? Just when I think this world can't get more strange, someone tells me something like that...really, what's strange about the idea of people living on another planet compared to that?

[info]lucky_no_7

I know, right? The only problem is that it's freakin' delicious and it's wobbly. Wobbly food, in my opinion, is one of the coolest things ever.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]cheeseordeath
2011-07-18 10:12 pm UTC (link)
Wait, wobbly? It's food you can play with?

...maybe I can just play with it and not eat it. Though I've probably eaten worse things than horse hooves over the years, somewhere along the line...

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]lucky_no_7
2011-07-18 10:23 pm UTC (link)
Totally wobbly. Apparently I freaked out about it when I was about six, because I thought it was alive. My uncle, said that I just made dinosaur noises while I ate it.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]cheeseordeath
2011-07-18 10:30 pm UTC (link)
You thought it was alive? How much does this stuff move? I have to try this. And it really tastes good?

...dinosaurs are something like dragons, right?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]lucky_no_7
2011-07-19 12:25 am UTC (link)
How much it moves depends on how thick you make it. Most people make it pretty wobbly, and c'mon, I was six and I'd never seen it before. And it tastes about the same as any other artificial fruit things do.

Pretty much, only dinosaurs don't breathe fire, and they're extinct.
At least, they're extinct where I'm from.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]cheeseordeath
2011-07-19 08:42 pm UTC (link)
I can't imagine this at all. Definitely have to try it. How's it made? Can you order it in a restaurant or something? I nearly burned down my kitchen the only time I tried to cook in it so not sure I'd trust myself to make whatever this is.

Probably not here. Like I said, I think nearly everything is here, someplace. If I see anything that looks like a dragon I'll be sure to let you know so you can come have a look. So long as I'm pretty sure it isn't going to try and eat me. In that case, I'll be running as fast as my legs will carry me and will apologize to you later.

Sometimes you can! Sometimes it's even in salad bars, but that's usually in the American midwest, because Americans are weird.

I totally understand that, I'd be running like hell too.

Hmm, I'm in America--don't think I'm in the midwest though, I seem to be as far west as you can get without being underwater--but I don't think I've spotted anything like that. I'll have to keep an eye out.

A lot of supermarkets have it pre-made in cups! It makes things easier than making it yourself.

Now that I can try. Supermarkets are amazing. Whatever food you want, all there in rows! And the cheese! I'd never seen so much cheese in my life! I'm tempted to sell my apartment and see if I can move into the cheese aisle.

I think they'd probably frown on that.

I probably shouldn't tell you that there are places that only sell cheese. Specialty stores kind of deal.

I'm sure they would, that's part of the appeal.

No, you definitely shouldn't tell me that. At least not until I get my next paycheck.

No, not exactly, I just don't do very well with authority sometimes. Or being given orders. And sometimes it's fun to do what people don't expect.

That or I just have an unholy love of cheese. One of those.

Where are you from, then? My home was called Thedas. I have no idea where it was in relation to where we are now, frankly. It might as well have been a dream.

It's a planet called Lorien. It... doesn't really exist anymore.

And wow that's the first time I've said that to anyone.

I'm honored, then. Thank you for telling me.

I'm...sorry your home is gone. Even though I can't return to mine, it comforts me to think it's out there somewhere. I'd hate to not have that.

The planet's still there, well, it might not be here, I don't know, that's confusing. It's just that it's been ravaged is all.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]shiftlinggirl
2011-07-23 05:38 pm UTC (link)
Perhaps it can be rebuilt, then. My home was ravaged too, by a Blight. It's taking a long time healing.

We'll assume your home is still here somewhere, then. Why not? So many things are possible here that weren't before.

[info]lucky_no_7

That's my job, to go back and rebuild, not me alone, there are others. But I don't know where, or even who, or if any of them are here.

... I might be the last of my kind.

I'm sure you aren't. They must be out there someplace, and perhaps they'll even show up here. Everything else seems to, sooner or later!

I know I wasn't the last one back home, but I might be the only one here.

Suppose there's really only one way to find out.
