It really is, I've rather been enjoying it.

And what have you been doing with your new-found freedom, other than enjoying it?

Tried school for a while, it was alright. Didn't keep up with it though, most of it was things I'd already learned, and the things I need to learn, they don't teach there.

So I've been traveling as of late. I seem to have replaced someone in almost my same situation, and definitely with my same resources.

Traveling is a great advantage of freedom.

It really is. I'll probably go back to New York though, I liked it better there than London.

Oh? I rather enjoyed my time in London, all things considered. What do you plan on doing in New York?

Live there. I've got an apartment, it's the one I fell into when I got here, then I found that I had another in London. It's ... strange, really, knowing that I have two places I can go to if I like, whole cities.

Ah, I see. And I imagine you'll continue learning, even without the formal structure of school.

Oh yes. I don't think I'll be able to get around that. I would say I need a lesson in common sense, but it's not that so much as common knowledge, I almost feel as if I've been living in a bubble.

... actualy, I sort of have been.

I take it you're not being entirely metaphorical?

Not really at all, sadly. All roads leading both to and from the Village. Nothing outside of it, except perhaps the towers.

This is, of course, ignoring the fact that it never existed in the first place.

What was it, some sort of virtual construct?

Something like that. My mother dreamed it up. It's ... complicated to explain, and I don't fully understand it myself.

Your mother?

Do you know why she would do such a thing?

She and 2, my father, wanted to fix things. Fix people.

Ah.

Well.

I can't even call that a noble aspiration. I'm not sure anyone can fix people. We don't respond well to externally imposed fixing.

It did work, for a while. Even with the Dreamers. It held together for years, until 6 came along, and then it all unraveled.

How well could it have really worked if only one person could unravel it?

That's ... actually quite a good question. I'm not sure, don't know that I ever will be. Don't suppose it much matters now.

Part of being a peace officer is learning to ask good questions.

No, I suppose it doesn't matter much now, other than pondering the question may help you gain new perspective on your experiences there.

I suppose it's just that no one thought to question it before 6 came along and got the Dreamers believing that they weren't just imagining things and that there really was life beyond the Towers. Before him they didn't really talk about it, even among themselves.

Why did no one question it?

Don't know, really. Because things were the way they were and the way they always had been. No one had any reason to question it, I suppose.

Interesting. I'd wonder about any sort of subtle programming that discouraged too much self-reflection or introspection.

Well the Dreamers still remembered, though they didn't know it, and once people were fixed they were sent back to wherever they'd come from. No one really thought about it much, I know I didn't until I got here, that how could we get new people and lose old ones if all roads led both to and from the Village.

That and Dreamers had a way of disappearing if they started to talk about what was outside, because, of course, there was nothing outside.

People who dreamed, who could sometimes remember things from outside.
