What does that mean, Pete?

It has to do with her blood pressure. The last couple days it went up and today it dropped really low. Now it's stable.

It's dangerous. For her and the baby.

Is Chris and Auntie Kar okay, Uncle Pete?

I'm afraid not, Sofia, I wish I could say they were.

The doctors, they think they can only save one of them. They want me to decide which.

But... no, that's dumb!

Ask Papi! Him's said he's gonna make them betterer!

I know it's dumb.

But there isn't anythng even your Papi could do, he's been helping with the case. Auntie Kar is very sick, and if they keep Chris inside of her, she'll get sicker, if they take him out, she'll get better, but he could die.

I. .

I wish it were that simple, sweetheart.

But he's still too early. I'm gonna have them keep him in there as long as they can.

And, what does that mean, Pete? Does it mean we have to choose?

The baby has something like a 60-65% chance of survival if delivered this week.

A 65-70% chance if next week.

But the longer she's pregnant, the sicker Karen gets.

I'm not letting them do it. She wouldn't want it.

No. Not yet. Not unless, fuck. Why doesn't she just fucking wake up?

That seems to be the one thing they can't tell us, Caleb.

But that baby isn't being delivered until Karen absolutely cannot live with him inside of her.

Preeclampsia can be very serious, Mr. Davis. The only treatment for it is delivering the baby.

Is her blood pressure staying high?

I know that but it's too early. If something happened to him she'd never forgive me.

It was high for a couple days and yesterday is got really low, it was higher again this morning. So it fluctuates.

The doctors will keep a close watch on her and the baby. Unless you tell them to, they won't deliver the baby until it's absolutely necessary to preserve the life of both Karen and the child.

She most likely has other concerns besides the preeclampsia. Typically a low blood pressure is not an indicator. Is she spilling protein into her urine?

Dr. Chase said she was, yeah. They keep testing it and saying there's protein. She just started running a fever too.

If she does have preeclampsia and it develops into eclampsia, she will need to be delivered immediately. They'll do everything they can for the baby.

I know. We know, Caleb and I, I mean.

I just don't quite get how a knock on the head ans falling into a coma turns into preeclamsia.

She was probably already predisposed to having hypertension. The stress of being stuck in the parking garage coupled with the stress of the probably concussion she sustained from the falling debris and the subsequent fall were sufficient to put her in the state she's in now.

Pregnancy is a very unpredictable condition. Believe me, I know.
