I have fresh fruit. Fresh fruit that I didn't have to pay a small fortune for.

How the human race goes from readily available produce to outgrowing a whole planet in just a few hundred years is beyond me. I've been trying to wrap my brain around it and I simply can't.

Enjoying the grapes though.

We destroy the Earth?

Not so much destroy as outgrow.

When I'm from we call this place 'Earth-that-was', it's no longer able to support life, don't know if it even still exists, actually.

That's -

I'm so ashamed of us.

You shouldn't be.

Are you ashamed of children for outgrowing old clothes?

The Earth was meant to provide for as many as it was capable of, and yet we continued to grow and grow like greedy children eating sweets until they got sick. At least that's what it sounds like to me.

But no planet can sustain forever. Especially a species that has no natural predators.

... although, we do here. Hm. This bears some thinking.

You don't think that earthquakes or tidal waves were meant to cull the herds?

I've never thought as much, no. Those were happening long before we were here.

They happen on other planets yet to be terraformed, ones that have been. It's why they're called natural disasters even in my time.

Everything has to have balance - animals, algae, the climate. Nature fixes itself on any planet, I'd imagine.

An act of nature and an act of God are often the same thing, aren't they?

I believe in God and Nature acting in harmony more often than not.

Exactly so. They can be the same thing, or two separate entities, it all depends on what book you use.

I'm a Shintoist but my mother was a devout Catholic. I try to read them all.

Always good to have a well-rounded basis of philosophy. Never know who may need counsel.

My name's Book, Shepherd Book, if you're one who cares for titles.

Rei Hino. It's nice to meet you, Book. I'm a miko at my temple, but it's not really a title so much as a job.

Shepherding is my mission. Once I'm finished I'll probably return to the abbey. Or I'll just keep at it, hard to say. I've still got ten years to decide.

You're so sure you'll go home? Or are you going to join another abbey?

Oh.

Do people really stay here for that long?

I think so. Most of the people I know have been here some time.

Oh, I see.

Well, it's not such a terrible situation, I've a job at least, and there's fresh fruit.

On occasion. That at least is easy enough to get back home. Synthesized, anyway. Fresh costs somewhat more of a fortune than produce does, and I suppose I just hadn't looked that far at the market.

I do, as a matter of fact, even learned how to catch them myself, even though there aren't any oceans or even deep lakes near the abbey.

You should have sushi.

I hadn't thought of that!

Apparently I've been to distracted by the produce to bother looking for prepared foods I know.

I think I would like that quite a bit.

And the only real difference is that this one's cleaner.

Well, and there aren't any spaceships.

Can't very well get to other planets to terraform them without spaceships, can you?

I'm at [address] would you like to meet somewhere?

Without. I could too, if my friends were here, but they're not. Yet.

I'll come to you and then bring you to the restaurant, if that's okay?

And that sounds like a fine plan. Should I expect you soon?
