WHO: Mason and Ezra
WHERE: Firehouse
WHEN: [Flashback] April 27, 2014; before dawn
WHAT: Zombies swarm the fire house. First encounter with zombies.
CHALLENGE: #3, trapped with a stranger.
The Jeep was a piece of shit, always breaking down. He had to push it the last half mile to the firehouse. They always had some extra tools laying around for repairing the vehicles. Mason stood outside the building, his head underneath the hood, trying to sort out whatever the problem was with the engine. He was no professional mechanic, could only repair the engine if the problem was obvious. All he had to do was get it working, get back to Haven and take the Jeep to the garage for a proper inspection. All he wanted to do was shove the damn thing off the side of a cliff and be done with it. Spending time with Ren was worth the frustrations, though. His cousin was on some YouTuber retreat that coincidentally happened to be on the same island where his business was located. Family didn’t often get to visit him out here, so it always put him in a really good mood whenever one (or all) of them got the chance to come out. He’d left her at the hotel a little over an hour ago. Some kind of hubbub was going on. Bunch of sick workers making the resort understaffed. He offered to let her stay in his shop, but there was only the one bedroom. She would have to crash on the couch, which wasn’t ideal. So he suffered the decline of the offer and said he would come out to visit tomorrow. They could do some surfing or something. There were several people, most of them part of the firefighting crew, milling about the building, doing this or that. Mason paid them no mind, went about his task. The crew knew him, knew he was capable of making off with the borrowed tools, though he’d never once left the premises with anything more than a grease rag. He went around to hop into the driver’s seat, willing the engine to come to life this time. It whirred, attempted to start, choked out towards the end. “Fucking piece of shit.” He smacked his palm against the steering wheel. |
