Aimé Laurent: The Funeral.
Subject: The Funeral.
Who: Aimé Laurent
Where: The Embassy Chaple.
Warnings:None
Open to: Everyone

Fittingly it was a cold day. The air was crisp, and the sky cloudy and the coffin the best that they could afford. The body should have been entombed in France, in the family plot, but at least there was a little comfort to be taken in the form of the Catholic ceremony. His father would have been proud of that, although it would cost dearly one day the sacrfice was worth making.

Aimé was numb. He knew there were things he should be feeling, thinking but he couldn’t begin to comprehend that tomorrow he would get up and his father wouldn’t be there. It had been a week already but with the arangments for the funeral he had been distant from his emotions, preocupied with organising.

Tomorrow. There would be so much to do tomorrow. To think about. But not now, now he had to show a united front with Antoine, greet those who had come to pay their last respects and put off grieving for another day.

Augustin had entered the chapel but stayed in the shadows. He didn't relish a confrontation in here or during the service, but he did have a right to be there and wanted to say good-bye to their father as much as Aimé or Antoine. He pulled his over coat around him, the day a cool one, chilly even inside.

He kept his head down as he kept sight of the coffin. It had been increasingly hard to maintain his composure, especially within the Embassy. His talks with the Ambassador had done nothing to help that either. He was caught between a rock and hard place, between wanting to .do what was right in his heart and do whatever it took protect his family

Aimé glanced around the chapel, trying to work out who he knew and who he did not. He was suprised by the number of people who he couldn't name, or whom he knew only by sight. His father appeared to have been a very popular man.

He wondered if Augustin, wherever he was, knew of their father's death or if he even cared.

Léon had taken a break from the paperwork that littered his desk and decided to take a stroll. Well, that is what it might have appeared but there was nothing so casual about what he did. He had lit a cigarette, and with his ink-stained hands clasped behind his back he made his way down towards the chapel and it's open doors, finishing off his cigarette as he lingered on the threshold, watching those who mourned within.

Aimé frowned, unable to believe the gall of the ambassador to show up here, at this time. Very well, it was his embassy and thusly his chapel but still of all the days. With what Aimé had had to promise...

The Ambassador had noticed the young man watching him, and dropped his cigarette onto the stone step, quenching it with his heel before entering the church and giving Aimé a nod. "A good turn out, Monsieur Citoyen." He commented, with another glance around. "Both of your brothers and even more of our countrymen. No doubt your father is sorely missed by all."

"Thank you for your kind words, sir." Aimé said, although he felt the words were anything less than kind. "I didn't realise you would be comming today, given your difference of opinion with my father."

Léon could not help but smile. "That does not mean I can not pay my respects, does it not? Nor does it mean that I might not speak to you, or your brother. It is only a pity your father did not live to see his family make the headlines."

"No, no respects, certainly." He said, still with the same smile, "Not least to traitors to France. But I am sure you remember our last conversation? At your Lord Hurst's entertainment?" He asked, pausing and pulling out a letter part-way from his pocket, addressed to the editor of the Herald, before pushing it back into the safety of his pocket. "It is already to send, Monsieur."

Augustin has moved around the back of the chapel and cringed as he saw the Ambassador arrive. He moved close enough to hear he and Aime talk and he wanted to throttle the man for again threatening his brother, his family, and at this time. Augustin knew he needed to act quickly after the funeral to relieve the Ambassador. But there would be time for that. He needed to wait until the two separated and fine Aime, and then Antoine, let them both know that he was there and there for them both.

Aimé flushed red, glancing around the room hoping no-one had heard them or might guess what was transpiring between them. The stranger from before was watching them and Aimé turned away, a sense of recognition on the edge of his mind but he had more pressing things to deal with. "I cannot believe you would discuss this here. I told you I do not know anything, why will you not stop hounding me? And my father was not a traitor. He loved his country, even after what people like you did to it."

The smile froze somewhat. "Ah, you mean the people of France? Those who were oppressed by your father and his class?" He said, taking another cigarette from his pocket, and lighting it from one of the chapel's candles. "You will have to come and speak to me more privately, Monsieur. Or instruct your elder brother to on your behalf." He added, "After these proceedings. The letter will be dispatched within the next two days, I promise you."

“This is cruel, too cruel.” Aimé whispered, wrapping his arms around himself. “I cannot give you what you want. I’ve told you that – I don’t know why you persist in thinking I have some sort of misplaced loyalty when I have none. What else is there that I can give you to leave my family alone?” He couldn’t deal with this, not with the death of his father. He wasn’t clever the way Antoine was, he couldn’t put his emotions aside and deal with the situation at hand.

Léon paused, crewing on the end of the cigarette thoughtfully as he glanced over the young man. "Perhaps there is something you can. But I would rather have the name of the ship and her captain." He told the boy, glancing over to the eldest of the Laurent children. "Do you think your brother would remember? Should I ask him, Aimé? In front of all your guests?"

"Why are you doing this today of all days?" Aimé hissed, trying not to draw attention, not to show his anxiety. "Please don't talk to my brother. I cannot remember, as I have told you before. What is this other thing I can do for you?"

"I will see you again tomorrow, if needs be, Aimé. Today was just more convenient for me. And I thought this might take your mind off things." He added with a small flicker of a smile. "But I'm not going to keep asking forever, of course. I do hate it when there is nothing interesting in the news papers."

He paused then, glancing over Aimé again. "I would speak to you privately. Somewhere perhaps more... neutral. Over breakfast."

"Over breakfast?" Aimé repeated, the unspoken question hanging between them. Neutrality was not one of the things he considered the ambassador to be interested in, nor did he think he would invite Aimé to eat with him - not that Aimé would touch a bite of anything served up by the man.

"Your hearing is in perfect order, Aimé." Léon said, "Breakfast. It is taken before the day has the chance to grate on one's soul. Don't you agree? At a nice restaurant, or an inn, perhaps? An Inn would be best."

"Breakfast, did someone mention breakfast," Augustin said approaching them both like he'd not been listening to every word exchanged between the two men. His blood was boiling at how the Ambassador was treating Aimé but remained unwavering as he smiled.

"Ambassador I do thank you for keeping my brother company before the service. This is a very trying time for my brothers and I as I'm sure you can imagine. But I do thank you for allowing us to have the service here." Augustin moved to Aimé's side, hoping he wouldn't be too alarmed until they could be alone.

He tried not to show any surprise, only drawing in another lung full of smoke as the second Laurent joined them. "Augustin. I was worried you would not make it to the ceremony. You can of course have the rest of the day off." He smiled to the pair of them, eyes resting, lingering, slightly longer on Aimé. "I shall see you soon, Monsieur Laurent. Give your eldest brother my condolences."

Aimé wasn't sure what to do or say at that moment. It was obvious now why he had recognised the stranger, being that he was his own brother but for Augustin to show up here, now after everything that had happened.
"The rest of the day off? Augustin, you are working for this man?" He asked, horrified his brother's betrayal still ran that deep. "How dare you come. You aren't welcome and you aren't wanted, and I do not need your help in my battles."

It surprised him how much he still hated his brother for what he'd done and how quickly he accepted him being back. He had thought so many times about what he'd do if saw Augustin again but this wasn't one of the situations he had considered.

"Thank you Monsieur. I think there will be a lot to deal with with my family." He looked to Aime, keeping up appearance at present. "Aime, show some respect. The Ambassador helped me, when no one else would." He nodded and then took Aimé's arm and moved away with him, to another part of the chapel.

"Do you hate to me so much little brother that you deny me even this?" Augustin didn't need to fake being hurt by Aimé's words. "Yes I work for him but so I could know what information he gathered on you and Antoine, and father. I will make things right."

Augustin glanced around. "But I do not wish to cause you more upset, especially today. I had hoped the paper hadn't been right, that I was still part of this family but I can see it is true. I will leave and... see to father another time." Though tears were expected today, Augustin didn't want to lose his composure, not now. "Good bye Aimé. I... I am sorry."

Aimé wrenched his arm free from Augustin's hold, shaking his head. "Stop that. I don't want to hear about how kind he might have been - he had hounded us since the moment we landed here and if he thought he could get away with it would deport us to France and execution."

He stepped away from his brother, rummaging in his pocket for the silver cigarette case. He hadn't needed to have one of these in such a long time, not since Mercedes left. He couldn't help it now. He needed this to calm his nerves. He didn't like smoking in front of people - he felt effete with the small tapered cigarettes rather than cigars that men like the ambassador and Lord Hurst smoked.

"I hate you more than you realise." He whispered, but he stepped aside. "But you're welcome to say goodbye at least, you deserve that."

He stared as his little brother and the sting of his words were not lost on Augustin. "I was dying and had nothing. Father wouldn't see me so I had to survive on my own. I have done nothing but try and keep you and Antoine safe. The Ambassador would likely have you gone already but for my intervention. I won't let either of you die though you could care less if it happened to me."

He didn't want to speak to harshly to Aimé but he wasn't sure there was any other way. Augustin sighed as he saw the cigarette case but said nothing of that. For Aimé's words struck him deeper than the bullet wound in his chest. He pushed Aimé against the wall and leaned in close, whispered heatedly. "If you hate to me so much, it's a wonder that I bothered to warn the rest of you to get out of France and provide you a way here," he seethed before realising what he'd said. He wiped the tears away angrily and turned to walk away. No one wanted him here, there was no reason to stay.

"What do you mean by that?" Aimé hissed, not ready to let Augustin walk away - not after saying something like that, not after Aimé had so many things he still wanted to say - wanted to scream at him - "Are you just going to walk away again? Not even going to tell Antoine you're back in the country or did you just feel like hurting me?"

"I... nothing. Nevermind it Aimé," Augustin said, stopping and glancing back. He frowned and stood infront of his brother. "YOU have made it very clear you don't want me around, and Antoine has made it clear it doesn't want me in this family." He reached in and put his hand to Aimé's heart. "I would never see you hurt; haven't I always told you that? I'm sorry if you have been and if I was the cause of it. I should have known better than coming here. You and Antoine have been better without me."

It hurt him to say those things, but it hurt even more to know that one of the people he loved and cared about most in the world thought so little of him, hated him, and Augustin couldn't deal with that, not from Aimé.

"And yet you did quite happily see me hurt when you left us, when you betrayed your family and your country." Aimé hissed, brushing his brother's hand away. He couldn't stand to have Augustin touch him so intimately after what he had done, how they had used to be together before.

"Why is it so alright for you and Antoine to do as you please, what you think is best for the family and for yourselves, and I can not?" Augustin pulled his hand away but didn't back off. "What about the betrayal of my own family? Who at the first trouble, left me behind, forgotten, with a second glance?" He was angry now, not so much at Aime though he wasn't helping. Emotions were too close to the surface.

"Do you want the Ambassador to send off his letter Aime? Do you still want to fight your battles on your own?" he hissed angrily. "I've never betrayed my family; I've tried to make you all safe by any means..." Augustin pulled up his shirt, showing the vast scar over his abdomen before tucking it back into his trousers. "Any means.... would it be better if I'd died? Is that what you want, to never see me again?"

"You weren't in trouble, you'd cooperated with the enemy." Aimé said stiffly. His eyes widened at the sight of his brother's wounds, and the retort he had to the question about the ambassador’s blackmail dying on his tongue. "What happened to you Augustin? What did you do?"

"To save you! You, Antoine and father? I've never hidden that I believe in the Revolution, but not for one moment would I give any of you up to it, no matter what Aimé , no matter what."

Augustin frowned and righted himself once again, straightening his clothes. "I had a disagreement with someone and stepped in front of their gun." He waved it off. "I don't need to burden you Aimé. Go, take care of Antoine. I'm sorry for troubling you." Augustin turned, heartbroken, and stiffened as he looked for the fastest way out of the chapel.

"Augustin, don't treat me like a child. What do you mean you stepped in front of a gun?" Aimé said, unable to keep his worry coming through in his voice. Despite everything Augustin was his brother, and no matter how much he hated him he loved him still - couldn't stop that.

Augustin didn't want to remember those days but he had to tell Aimé something. "I got caught up with radicals and was a republican bleu in the Vendée civil war, ill equipped and not trained well. We were no better than targets. But I guess we deserved it right, traitors to the country, betraying our families," he said, hurt and his sarcasm not hidden at all. "I thought I was being brave, wanting to see as many of the others not be killed and ran into an ambush and ended up with a bullet in the chest and side for it."

Sighing he leaned against a stone pillar and looked at Aimé. "I could barely move for months; I think they'd given up on me. If... if I'd tried to get a word to father and you two, it would have handed you all over to the Committee. As soon as I could, was strong enough to travel, I came to England to look for you but... by the the time I had courage enough to endure the distain of my family, I learned father had passed."

"I'm sorry to hear that. And no, I do not think anyone deserves death - but I know you can hardly share my sympathies. You are working for the man who is hunting our countrymen." Aimé said coldly, crossing his arms across his chest, chilled by his brother's words to him.

"I...why did you come to look for us? Do you want to admit now that you were wrong?" He could imagine a brush with death would do that to a man.

"To keep an eye on him. I knew he was trying to find you, find something to hand you, Antoine and father to the Committee. I was trying to do what was best for the family once you got to England," he said whispering loudly. "Why is it okay for you to do what's best for the family but I can't?"

He knew it'd been foolish to think Aimé would hae been happy to see him, to have worried at all about him. "I.... well for some reason I thought my family wanted to see me. Clearly dumb Augustin was mistaken yet again. It's okay for you to have your beliefs and feel strongly about them, but I'm not afforded the same."
Augustin straightened his overcoat. "You've made yourself clear. Let the Ambassador send his document to the papers, lean on Antoine as your brother. Perhaps I did make a mistake, but it seems those aren't forgiven in this family anymore."

He couldn't help looking sad, the fight to keep a stiff upper lip and be strong overwhelming him and he was more defeated than anything. "I am sorry for hurting you, for leaving without any word and if it could have been helped, I would have."

He looked at Aimé. "Do you understand that I am sorry for hurting the family, for not being near but that I was doing what I thought was right, what was best, Aimé? The news about father? I wasn't even mentioned; yes everyone mourn him and the TWO sons he leaves behind." He looked at Aimé, lost and bewildered. "Are you blaming Antoine for that?" Aimé asked softly, crossing his arms across his chest. "No-one knows about you here, no one in England and we have hardly presented ourselves as having a brother who abandoned us. You cannot blame Antoine for what the papers think or choose to print." He said, well aware that soon his name would be within those pages - this time in circumstances that would most likely ruin any good reputation he had.

"I... " Augustin didn't know what to say. He'd just reacted, the past between he and Antoine so strained for so long. But Aimé was right. He couldn't blame Antoine, not without talking to him, giving him a chance to speak to him himself. "No, you're right Aimé. I keep upsetting you and it isn't my intent. I should go. I don't wish to do it any further, nor do I wish to upset Antoine in kind either. I will seek him later to speak to him. No one else would be expecting me to be here anyway."

Augustin pulled his coat tighter around his body. He felt colder all of a sudden and had managed to ruin an already hard and emotional day even moreso.
