Quite a Mystery
Subject:  Miles confronts Eward
Where:  Daniel's place.
Who:  Miles Rochester, and a cameo by Lady Gwendolyn
Warnings:  TBA
Open to:  Miles, Eward, Daniel, Katherine- anyone who has reason to be there and doesn't mind an incredibly pissy Miles.

Miles really, really hated tax season. Going over the accounts at the end of the day was fine and all that, but going through all of the accounts for the purposes of a bloody new income tax- well, really! Who ever heard of taxing someone on how they made their money instead of how they spent it?

He was eager for any sort of distraction as he closed the ledgers and rubbed his eyes. Miles pulled on his frock-coat with the vague intention of setting off to White's for cards and a brandy when the parlormaid said, "And poor Miss Rochester!"

Miles paused. Normally it was Not Done and Excessively Impolite to eavesdrop on one's servants, but Miles had no clue what his sister had been up to. Thus, bad form that it was, he creaked the door open and listened in on the parlormaid, relating all the particulars of the Rochester household to the new footman.

"She went and lost her fiance- he got murdered, they say- member of the nobility- and you never saw a girl act half so queer. Everyone knew she hated him, but Miss Rochester came back all broken-hearted like from her holiday. Now she's spending all her time at the doctor's. Poor lamb. No idea what to make it, though... now here's Mr. Rochester's library, and you don't go in it when he's working...." The parlormaid walked off and Miles, for lack of anything better to do, opened the door and stared blankly into the hall.

At the doctor's? What the hell? There was a knock on the door before Miles could reflect further on the subject.

"Lady Gwendolyn Linley," the butler announced, and Lady Gwendolyn breezed by him into the library.

"Oh," she said, dipping into a curtsy. "I thought Katherine would be home. I heard the most shocking rumor about Lord Eward and-"

"Lord Eward?" Miles repeated, a little sharply.

Lady Gwendolyn eyed Miles speculatively, an unexpected shrewdness in her light green eyes. "Yes. Lord Eward has been absent from society for weeks now. Lady Melbourne has it from Lady Jersey who had it from Captain Greville, ho had it from his sister who had it from her maid who had it from the cook in the Mountford-Miles house that Lord Eward was beaten within an inch of his life and living at the doc-"

"Ha!" Miles exclaimed. "Got it now!"

Lady Gwendolyn narrowed her eyes. "You certainly rejoice in his downfall." She puzzled something over a moment and brightened. "He really did ruin your cousin?"

"What? Oh yes, he did. She nearly died, ruined our family name, we're all thoroughly disgraced. " He edged out of the library. "Thankyouhaveagooddaygoodbye!" He left Lady Gwendolyn gaping at him in the library and, seizing hat, gloves and walking stick, ran out of the house and all the way to Daniel's.

As soon as he reached the doctor's house, he hammered on the door with his walking stick. "Eward! I know you're here!"

"Sorry, bit of a rush," Miles said, edging past Daniel. "Exceedingly sorry- will have the servants bring round chicken soup for everyone, mustgogoodbyethankyou!" He ran up the stairs and almost skidded to a stop in front of the second door to the left.

Miles yanked open the door, letting it slam shut behind him, other patients be damned, and scowled down at Lord Eward. "Alright Eward, just what the hell is going on?"

Eward's bright smile at the door opening soon faded into one of disappointment, then sheer dislike. Miles. What joy. Just what he needed for a speedy recovery. Not the tender arms and kisses of Katherine, no - the abrupt, abrasive voice of her brother. "Could you be less specific?" he drawled sarcastically, the charming persona typical of his time with Katherine fading away suddenly.

"Between you and Katherine more specifically," Miles said, crossing his arms. "I've half a mind to call you out and get you to name your second. Is she pregnant with your demon spawn? Oh, and another thing!"

Miles moved closer, the better to glare at Eward. "Did you kill her fiance?"

With an exaggerated roll of his eyes, Eward attempted to sit up. Miles was here, berating him like some scorned wife, and had obviously missed the fact that three days ago Eward had been dying. "No I did not kill her fiance. And no she is not pregnant. Does that answer your questions?"

"You did indeed, answer the first two questions I put to you," Miles replied testily. "Congratulations, Eward! You have the ability of a nine-year-old to follow directions and answer direct questions! Here I was think you were mentally two. You always can surprise me, Eward."

In the haze of anger, Miles had completely forgotten the fact that Eward was, in fact, still ill and Miles had no idea why or how. Still, there was no time to ask questions like that. "And what are your intentions toward Katherine? I will not let you make her another one of your inamortas, to be cast aside at leisure."

Eward sat back into his pillows, letting the weak insults from Miles slide off his back like water on a duck. If Miles had meant to hurt him he wasn't doing a very good job, but then as Eward now felt invincible anybody would be hard pressed to offend him.

"I asked her to marry me. If you do not understand that intention I will gladly explain..." he said idly, smoothing down his bedsheets and avoiding Miles' gaze.

"You what?" Miles yelped, staggering back. "You... what the hell? I- I have... did she agree?"

Miles's inner monolgue could be summed up along the lines of: WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT? 0.o;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

"It was agreed that it was far too soon after her fiance's demise and that out of respect and the need to maintain reputation, we should hold off. But she did not refuse," Eward said, taking immense delight in telling Miles this.

[ooc- so sorry, ij was being horrid]

"She did- did she- she did not...." Miles spluttered, too alarmed for words. What the hell was Katherine thinking. Granted, she was old enough to make her own decisions, but What. The. Hell.

"We have to be brothers?" Miles demanded, groaning. "I would do anything for Katherine, but this is a little much." He paced around the room, trying to think past the initial fog of surprise, alarm, and gradually dawning horror. "How did you end up in here, anyways?"

"Oh, thank you for your obvious concern," Eward said with a roll of his eyes, shifting his sheets so he was more comfortable. "I was beaten outside of a tavern to within an inch of my life. And believe me, I wish Katherine did not come with - baggage - but as you are, yes we shall be brothers in law. Hopefully. When she says yes," he added, smiling warmly at the thought.

"Really?" Miles said, trying to think of something very cutting and witty. "Pity your assailant apparently failed maths at a child. An inch more and...." He heaved what was supposed to be a well-timed and ironic sigh, hampered by the fact that Miles was really unused to cutting and witty put-downs. He normally couldn't even be rude to the servants.

"Well what about your baggage, eh?" Miles demanded. "Like your sisters? And half of London society? And all the prostitutes within a two mile radius of the city- and, oh God, you don't have the clap, do you? You aren't allowed to give my sister the clap. I'd call you out if you did!"

"I don't have the damn clap! Since your sister I have not... been with anyone..." he admitted, feeling highly odd for telling Miles this. "Miles - please. I love her. I am in love with her. I adore her, I want to make her happy... if it means pleasing you as well then so be it, but I want nothing more than to spend my life with her."

"The syph then," Miles continued on, stuck on he idea. "Or the pox. You give either of them to Katherine and I'll see you at dawn. Hurt Katherine at all and I see you at dawn, with a gun in hand."

He had not been unfaithful to Katherine at least. There was that. "For all love... this is not the sort of thing I'd ever want for Katherine, but if you love her... god, this sounds like some sort of maudlin novel... look, prove to me you are worthy of marrying my sister. I have some severe doubts on that account."

"I... oh for God's sake," Eward snapped, becoming incredibly irritated. "Apart from several holes in my skin I have a clean bill of health. Daniel can verify it. And I am not afraid of your shooting technique, I learnt at the same time as you and it was shocking.."

He had to dig in, but it felt good. "If you want me to prove it to you I will..."

Miles had the urge to stick out his tongue, but he felt that to be more than slightly beneath his dignity. "Alright, fine. Just because you don't have th pox means I still think you can prove it."

He dragged up a chair and sat down. "Alright. I will wait until you have your holes stitched up and whatnot, but when did all this come about and ho d'you intend to prove you're worthy of my sister?"

Eward took a deep breath before exhaling in a hiss, wanting to get up and punch the fellow but managing to resist. "However you want me to prove it to you, I will. Apart from leaving her alone, that is not in the agreement," Eward added.

Miles had not quite thought that far ahead. He mentally cursed himself. "Right. So."

Goddammit.

He cleared his throat. "Alright, Eward. You- you love Katherine?"

Eward blinked. Was Miles really this tedious? How had Katherine lived with him all these years?

"Yes, Miles. I love Katherine. I love her to death."
