Patience raised an eyebrow. Did Melisande not read? Or were her parents that backwater that they didn't hear society gossip at the same time as everyone else? Or maybe her 'friend' was simply unsure of the etiquette and had thought not to visit Patience in her hour of need.

"Poor dear, I thought even you would be privy to the gossip. It's hardly been a secret."

"Unfortunately, father doesn't let me out on my own too much" Melisande said,it was harder now to maintain her kind tone.It was true, had she not read the paper or heard the gossip form her mother, she would have never known. At least she wouldn't have been able to confess having heard about it late at night in a pub.
"And I've never been a fan of gossip anyway" she added, though she made an exception when it came to gossip about Patience Hurst.

Patience smiled sweetly at Melisande. She was so very odd, coming to a party wearing a dress so similar to her hostess's and then commenting that she disliked gossip.
"Of course not." She said, rather disbelievingly.

The conversation had gone sour. Melisande could tell she'd upset Patience a bit so she changed the subject to something she knew would cheer her up.
"So tell me about this dashing man who came to your rescue" she said.

Patience brightened straight away, smoothing back her hair from her face, her smile growing wider.
"Oh. He was the most magnificent man. Tall, handsome, dark haired. He's a Frenchman, Melie, so you might know him. Antoine Laurent? He was ever so brave. Caught the thief, returned my purse and then escorted me home. I'd never seen anything like it."

Melisande thought for a minute,if he was rich and french she'd probably met the man before, but she couldn't remember ever having met him.
"The name is familiar, but I don't believe I've met him. I'm glad he was able to come to your rescue though." she tried to sound as sincere as possible.

"Do you think he'll be coming by to visit you again?" she asked with a wink. She was implying that the two were having some sort of affair. Melisande knew how absurd it was, but she wanted to tease Patience.

"Well, I would hope he would want to see me again, yes..." Patience said warily, "But only with my father or brother's present to act as chaperones. Otherwise it would be quite unbecoming. Having heard what some of the gossip is I have no doubt you imagine me already secretly married to him, no?"

"Knowing you, I wouldn't doubt it" she teased her. She meant no harm with the comment, only that patience did seem eager to marry.
"but don't worry, I only thought you might be having an affair with him" she whispered this so that no one would over hear. Melisande wasn't one to watch what she said, but she didn't want to start any rumors. It might offend Patience, but Melisande didn't think the idea was offensive at all.

"Having an affair? Melie! What an awful thing to say. I've only just met him and, which is more important, I wouldn't do a thing like that!" Patience hissed, hoping no-one had overheard them. She didn't want that becoming gossip.
