Rupert wasn't sure about a party like this but the Commodore insisted he attend on his behalf, and though it was for the Duke of Devon, Rupert did like a party. As representative of the Company, Rupert had arrived his uniform. He had smiled as he put it on, bemused by thoughts of Nicholas as he did so.

He immediately reached for a flute of champagne as he moved through the crowd, mingling and looking to see if he recognised anyone. He didn't come from a wealthy family but his job had opened several doors to him as well as putting a foothold into the upper class society. And he could make his job easier and do more to help the company, Rupert would do so.

Lady Gwendolyn recognized the uniform at once. East India Trading Company! She smiled without realizing she did so; she owed a great deal to the East India Trading Company- such as her fortune, her title, and her position in London society- and she had loved India when she and her father had lived there.

She was greatly inclined to be agreeable to anyone from that company, and was even more inclined to start up a conversation so she might have the pleasure of talking of India.

Thus, she carefully unpinned her Kashmir shawl (worn draped over one shoulder, half in imitation of the Greeks, half in imitation of the Indians) and allowed it to slide off her shoulder and onto the floor as she walked by the East India Company officer. "Oh, pray excuse me!" she exclaimed, bending down to get it.

Rupert looked down and around, catching the lady's shawl as the two bumped, holding his hand out to her to help her back up. "I do apologise ma'am." He gently put the shawl back over her shoulder. He'd spent enough time in India to recognise the craftmanship of the work. "It would be a shame to let something so fine fall to the floor."

"You are exceedingly kind," said Lady Gwendolyn, she of the very easily gratified vanity. She placed a gloved hand very lightly on his to stand upright again and began rearranging the folds of her shawl. "I should so hate to dirty it; my father was good friends with one of the local Indian princes of Kashmir and His Highness was kind enough to give me this one as a present some years back. Would you be so kind as to told it on as I re-pin it?"

Rupert couldn't help but be intrigued by mention of India by this charming young woman. "Your father had the pleasure of being in India then?" he questioned with a smile as he held the shawl so she could do what was needed. "I myself have returned from there, back only a fortnight as it were. The princes of Kashmir ARE exceedingly kind to be sure."

"Yes, he was a member of the East India Company," she replied, carefully pinning her shawl back on. "I divided my childhood between Dublin and Kashmir. Ah! I hope your sail back was not unduly difficult? Or did you ride back through the continent?"

"As am I," he replied, letting go of her shawl as she pinned it back. "Though sadly, I was only there for 2 years. I hope someday to return, even for a little while."

Rupert smiled and nodded. "I came back by ship though I hear the continental journey is amazing. Unfortunately my duties required me to be back in London as soon as possible."

"I thought I recognized the uniform," Lady Gwendolyn said, in a tone of mild satisfaction. "You do it great credit, sir. Are you still with the East India company Mr... ah, oh forgive me. I forgot to ask your name!"

Rupert smiled and nodded. "You flatter me my Lady." He bowed properly infront of her. "Aveline, Rupert Aveline, esquire. And yes I am still with the Company. I presently work for the Undersecretary Miss.... oh do please give the name of the Lady I have the pleasure of speaking to?"

Lady Gwendolyn laughed. "Since you asked so prettily! Lady Gwendolyn Linley, sir, daughter of the Earl of Rosse." She curtsied. "It is a very great pleasure, I assure you, to talk of India again. It is not the same to ride a horse as it is to ride an elephant."

She had liked riding elephants.

"I am very glad we are well rid of camels, however. Horrid creatures, and so foul smelling!"

"My pleasure to meet a fellow traveller and lover of things Indian Lady Gwendolyn." Rupert laughed and shook his head. "No indeed, I do not think there is anything so different as to riding and elephant. And to be honest, I was not very fond of the camels. I sadly fell off, more than once, I must tell you."

"A camel once took a bite out of my favorite purple satin," Lady Gwendolyn said, with a sigh. "Let a horrible spit-stain. I had to give the dress to my maid. Still, there are consolations. We may not have elephants, but there are some very nice horses to be had, if one looks in the right avenues. Are you fond of riding yourself?"

"Travesty," Rupert said grinning. "I definitely would prefer the elephants. Even if one didn't nearly stampede through the market one spring," he added with a smile. "Luckily Lady Gwendolyn, we do have those right avenues. And as it happens I am fond of riding, though my duties at present to not give me cause for more time to do it."

Lady Gwendolyn cringed. "Ooh, stampeding elephants. I hope no one was very seriously hurt, and no fabrics were seriously injured."

Quips aside, Mr. Aveline liked riding. "Oh, I am sorry to hear it. Perhaps when you do have more time, you might join me in a ride through Hyde Park?"

"No indeed. Luckily for everyone, and all the tapestries, it was a little elephant."

Rupert grinned and nodded at her. "I hope my scheduled lightens up somewhat yes, and I would be happy to accompany you around Hyde Park. You can always send word to me at the Head Office. I will work my schedule around if need be."

"I think I might have enough influence to manage it," Lady Gwendolyn said, with a smile. "It would be my very great pleasure, Mr. Aveline! I hope to see you soon, then."

Rupert smiled back at her. "I don't doubt it at all." He took her hand as they made to depart and kissed it gently. "It would equally be my pleasure as well my Lady, and I hope to see you soon as well."

Charles hated the bloody parties that his parents forced him to attend. He hated being the heir for this reason alone. It would have been so much nicer if he could have left to find Piper - perhaps he could read him some of the poems he'd written for him. Absorbed with thoughts of the boy, he wasn't really paying attention to the crowds. However, he knew that he had to at least attempt to be a good host.

So, as he was grabbing a flute of champagne, he noticed someone he'd never seen before. Figuring that he could use this time to use the social skills that everyone thought he lacked, he walked over to him. "Good day. I'm Charles Hurst." He hated the title that he was given. He never used it. Of course, if he needed it, he had it. "How are you enjoying the evening?"

Rupert turned around and smiled. So this was Lord Hurst's son. "Good evening sir. I'm Rupert Aveline, and I'm enjoying the night very well, thank you. Your family puts together quite the amazing parties. I am here in lieu of the East India Company Undersecretary, my boss."

Nodding, Charles smiled a little. "Well, Mr. Aveline, I'm pleased that you were able to make it. And I'm sure that my father and sister will be happy to hear that you're enjoying your evening so far." Sipping his champagne, he wished that Piper were here for him to see and talk to. Forcing himself away from that train of thought, he nodded. "Please pass on to the Undersecretary that we are sorry he wasn't able to make it. But, it's always nice to see a new face at gatherings like this."

"I'm glad for it too. And yes enjoying myself quite well. I've only returned to England a few weeks ago, so this is very nice." Rupert took a drink and smiled at one of his hosts. He nodded. "Of course, I will pass them on to him when next I see him. He did say he would do his utmost to attend the next invitation when it came," he smiled. "It is nice to come I admit. I haven't often had the pleasure of such fine events in the past."
