"Lady Rochester, a pleasure to see you again." Hurst smiled at her, stepping across the room to her side. "It has been far too long since we talked. I was given to understand that you were unwell? Your daughter seemed quite concerned for your health, the last time we met at Bailston. Rebecca was eager to send you down a hamper of some description, did you ever receive it?"

"Lord Hurst!" Georgina said warming, delighted to see the host at last. "I was, but it was a fleeting illness, a small attack of my nerves, and I'm quite recovered now. Yes, she did - it was quite lovely. But now I hear it is your poor wife who is ill? Missing her own party, Rebecca must be terribly upset - but your daughter seems quite the little hostess. You must be proud.”

"Rebecca is disappointed, yes, but she does work herself so hard in preparation for these events I am afraid it is only to be expected." He told her ruefully. "Perhaps, after a rest, she will be able to join us later in the evening." Hurst continued, "I am sure she would hate to miss out on seeing her greatest friends. It has been so long since you have all been together."

Georgina nodded, taking a drink from a tray that was passing by and sipping at it. Rebecca she liked, but Lord Hurst she found a grand bore - with his shooting, and his hunting and his affairs. Naturally she would never say a think like that to Rebecca. It would be so heart breaking for her friend to know everyone knew of her husband's indiscretions.

"I hope so." She said evenly. "The poor thing should see my doctor. A fabulous young man and he prescribes the most wonderful revitalising tonics."

"I would be happy to take his details, Lady Rochester, if you would be kind enough to provide them. Something that would provide her with the energy she requires, a revitalising tonic sounds just the thing."

He paused then, glancing about the room. "I hope you won't find me rude for saying so, my Lady, but I have not yet seen either of your children tonight. I hope they are otherwise engaged and not ill? Although I would completely understand why Katrina would want to stay at home and not venture out."

"Katherine." Georgina said, although she wasn't sure why she bothered to correct him. "And why shouldn't she come tonight? Although both my children are old enough to make their own decisions about responding to invitations."

"Ah yes, Katherine." He said, although his thoughts were else-where. There was not much point in remembering the names of women who, although unattached, were too bookish in their manners to make pleasing lovers. "You are right, of course. I suppose my own will be at that age soon. How fast they grow..."

"Yes, they do." Georgina said. "But I hear your youngest is not yet old enough to talk, let alone come to parties on his own." She did not speak of Crispin Hurst, whom she knew was twelve and quite the young ladies man like his father, but of his latest illegitimate child. Georgina heard all the gossip from Augustus. Hurst had changed his will again to accommodate a small allowance for his newest son, and Augustus had over-seen the paperwork.

Lord Hurst could not help smiling slightly at her. He was extremely proud of his youngest son, a healthy boy who had already stolen Charles' place as his father's new favourite. "I can not honestly say I have the faintest idea what you are taking about, Lady Rochester. Would you like another drink?"

"No thank you, your lordship. My glass is still quite full." She took a sip from it as if to prove the point. "One would think a man at your age would have had his fill of the flesh, but obviously not. Who was she this time? A chambermaid? Or a prostitute?"

"I am glad you think so highly of my taste in women." He said drily. "But it really is none of your concern, Lady Rochester. Especially considering the sorts of books your son writes."
