"True, but her father is the Duke of Devon and related by blood to the King. A useful connection." He explained, "And more importantly, her father is looking to marry her off. Now, if Sebastian could be turned into some escaped aristocrat, we need never worry about our old age." He smiled, although the plan did not really appeal to him.

"I did not mean that sort of exotic, Beth." He said to her, taking another sip of wine. "His fantasies and practises are far from the usual, or so I have been told. Try not to be too shocked."

Beth looked at him darkly. "Sebastian is already settling us for our old age. I think he keeps half the banks deposits under his bed. Besides, he could never pass for an aristocrat. You've taken him to too many of these things as your valet to make it reasonable."

She laughed softly. "My dear, I live with you. Nothing shocks me anymore."

Sergius could not help but smile. "Ah, is that why his mattress is as uncomfortable as it is? I am glad now I did not mention it to his landlady." He says, finishing off his glass. "But perhaps you are right. I shall pour all my attentions into your climb through society."

"Nothing, my dear? Clearly I shall have to be more inventive. After all, I would not want your wedding night to bore you." He says softly, still smiling. "Speaking of wedding nights, we should speak to Lord Hurst before he seeks out his own company for the evening. Will you not join me, my dear?"

"Yes, of course." Beth said, fixing her smile in place and taking hold of Sergius's arm, waiting for him to escort her.

Lord Hurst had been speaking to anyone of the guests, a old friend, in fact, from their days at Oxford, before he excused himself and moved to find himself a glass of something to wet his throat. He was a good host, one who delighted in the role, in the attention that he brought him, and for a moment, stood next to the table piled with bottles, glasses, of all sorts, shapes and origins, he surveyed the room with a smile of his face, enjoying the murmur of conversation and the soft musical notes that floated through the air.

Sergius took her arm, guiding her across the room under the guise of preparing them both another drink, standing next to Lord Hurst and, apparently, only noticing the presence of his co-host as he handed the fine fluted champagne glass to Beth.

"My Lord Hurst! I hope you are enjoying the evening?" He said with a playful tone, although his eyes were bright with something other than innocent delight. "I do not believe I have introduced you to my guest of honour, have I? Then I shall, because she is truly the most delightful of women. Madame De La Mort, this is Lord Hurst. Lord Hurst, may I present you to Madame De La Mort. Madame helped me speak to my late wife, one last time. Chloe told me it was wrong to continue to mourn for her, after what she did."

Beth curtsied, lowering her gaze demurely.
"Lord Hurst. It's a pleasure to meet you. I've heard so much about you." She said. "I hope you don't think me presumptuous, my Lord, but I could tell before Sergius introduced me who you were - you had an aura of power around you."

If it were possible, Lord Hurst preened at that moment, straightening his back and looking more than a little pleased with himself. "My thanks, Madame. I do admit, I have heard some remarkable things about yourself, although no one had yet mentioned to me your impeccable beauty. You are a physic, are you not, Madame? A most interesting gift, and a rare one, I am given to understand..."

"Yes, I am, my Lord." Beth said, rising her gaze to meet his and smiled at him, a beguiling smile full of promise although her words were still ideal chatter. "Very rare. I think you'd have to travel quite far to meet another who possessed a gift as strong as mine."

Lord Hurst took a swallow of champagne, "I do quite believe your right. Although why a man would want to search for another is certainly a mystery to me, when one can have such talent and beauty so very close."

Sergius was inwardly pleased at how deeply Hurst was already under the woman's spell. While perhaps not gifted with a second sight, Beth certainly had some sort of power that brought men to her like fireflies. Perhaps it was her beautiful; the breath-taking figure and the dark eyes that made wicked promises at every glitter, and perhaps it was something about the way she did, with ever inch of her being, every beautiful curve, promise delights unknown...

He stopped himself there. This was not the time for private musings, or, in fact, for him to allow himself to be drawn by her spell. Tonight was purely business.

"Ah, forgive me, my dear. There is Thomas Kingsley-Holmes and I really must..." And then he was gone. Hurst wouldn't even notice the Russian had disappeared from his side, but Beth would, and she would know now to use the full force of her charms.

"You have a beautiful house, Lord Hurst." Beth said, waving Sergius away with a wave of her hand. "I'd very much like to see the gardens if you'd escort me. I believe you have some beautiful roses growing there now - red ones, yes?"

"Red, yes. They are wonderful flowers..." He said, offering her his arm and setting down his glass on the table, hoping that he would need both hands free during their walk. "I would cut you some, if you liked? Or perhaps one, for the moment, as it would be easier to carry. The others I could have sent to you." He said, taking her out of the ball room and onto the paved area outside, his heart thumbing in his chest. Take her on the grass, or against a tree so the rough bark would mark that perfect white skin or perhaps just have her in the rose-bed... "The roses, then?" He asked, although not exactly sure what the rest of his question ought to have been.

Beth was rather impressed. This was the quickest at which a man had ever offered her a gift, even if it was roses cut from his own back yard and she took hold of Lord Hurst's arm, leaning against him. "One for now would do quite nicely." She said, smiling up at him.

"Your wife is unwell, isn't she?" Beth said suddenly, as if it had just occurred to her. "I...she is lying down upstairs, but it is nothing too serious. She should be recovered by tomorrow." She looked up again at Lord Hurst, the light from the ballroom casting shadows over her face and highlighting her soft, red mouth, so very tempting. "But that leaves you all alone tonight, in a big empty bed."

"Oh, very. Very big, very empty." He agreed, as they moved down the path. "And that is not an idea that gives me much comfort, Madame..." He paused, guiding her off the path now and towards the rose-beds. "Madame, may I be so bold as to ask your name?" He said, the image of her lips, slightly parted, redder than the roses he now took her towards, and softer too, he had no doubts, perfectly preserved in his memory. The things that could be said by wicked, wonderful lips such as those!

"Beth" She breathed. "My name is Beth, and of course you must call me that. I feel that we are meant to be close, your Lordship, as if I am commanded by some greater will to serve you with my gift."

She hoped the words would incite visions in his head. She had chosen carefully. "Command" and "Serve" should no doubt inspire a man such as Lord Hurst.
"I would submit myself to you, if you would have me." Beth said, leaning closer still into him. "Spiritually."

Hurst swallowed, and swallowed again, his throat drier now then it had ever been before. Such a beautiful creature, so prefect and sensuous, offering herself... "Spiritually?" He repeated, his hands having moved when she spoke her his waist, his heart louder even than the crickets around them or the drone of the party inside. "I think, Beth, that we are close. Very close, in fact..." And he would like her to be closer, much closer, with her skirts pulled up perhaps or rid of the dress entirely, outside in the moonlit darkness like some wild pagan spirit... yes. That's what this creature was, could be, for him.

He couldn't help himself then. The sudden impulse must have been from her witchcraft, from some ancient desire and lust she somehow summoned. He pushed her back, against one of the thick old trees of the garden, holding her there between his own body and the tree, kissing her hard, his hands holding tight to her hips.

Beth gasped, more for effect than anything else. She might not have the gifts she pertained to have but she had known this would happen. She wrapped her arms around Lord Hurst, pulling him closer and kissing him back with just as much passion as he kissed her.

His poor Lady wife must not be much of a women, Beth decided, seeing as how her husband was so eager to bed a young woman he just met. Maybe she should aim higher than Sergius's wife and Lord Hurst's mistresses? Perhaps she should aim to be Lady Hurst herself, Duchess of Devon.

She broke the kiss, panting softly and looked down humbly.
"Spiritually, my Lord. My will is to serve you however you command, for your wellbeing."

He enjoyed the little noises she made, the gasp of surprise, almost as much as he delighted in the eagerness of her body, of the arms around his shoulders, which made it easier for him to grind against her hips, pressing against her; the friction of it almost more than any sane man could stand. But as the kiss broke he had to allow the woman some air, and besides, as she breathed her chest rose and fell within her bodice in the most stirring way... he brought a hand up from her hip, a finger moving from her breast-bone down between her breasts, before leaving her skin. "My well-being, Beth, depends very much on you..." He explained, brushing the stray hair from her throat and tipping his head to press several kisses there, each moving lower than the next.

She tremmbled a little at his touch, leaning back against the tree for support and to allow him to kisser her neck with more ease.
"However do you mean, my Lord? What should I do? Tell me and I'll do it."

Hurst made a low pleased noise against her skin, his free hand inching up her skirts to touch the soft skin beneath. She was good, very good, willing and corruptible and so desperate to be told, instructed, used. It was almost more then he could stand. "You are going to be my priestess. My pagan priestess." He told her, murmured against her skin, "You and your gift, your magic, I don't know what it is but you have something, and I want it, I want you." He told her, hand now travelling up her leg. "You and all your spirits and your wildness." He groaned against her skin again, lips at her shoulder now, as his free hand began to unfasten the cords of her dress, letting the sleeves slip down as he sucked on her flesh. "You are to be my wood nymph, my dryad, my spirit of nature, my pagan goddess, and I am going to have you, conquer you as mine." He already had the idea in his head. A tunic, some slip of a thing for her to wear, no shoes, no petticoats, and the woods and the standing stones down by the river edge. And he would have her there, in the long grass and by the trees and she would be his captured little spirit, to please him and the satyrs and all the other pagan creatures that would delight in her, make her breathless and groan.

Beth gasped, letting her dress slip free from her shoulders and breasts, and then pool on the floor under her. She was hardly naked, petticoats and stockings still on, but enough she knew to be more than arousing for a man such as Lord Hurst who was already so far gone Beth was certain she could request any number of things from him –a house, a title, his lands, and he’d gladly grant them to be with her.

For a moment she debated whether she should allow him what he wanted. For some men the chase was what was important but she didn’t think it would be that way with Lord Hurst. He seemed to want to surround himself with pretty things. But it didn’t mean he would want to make her his mistress.

“Do I please you my Lord?” She asked quietly. “I…want some reassurance, my Lord, before I succumb to you.”

He swallowed again, voice wavering as he replied, hands moving up and down over her bare sides, trembling slightly as he stroked her skin. "You do, my dear, my goddess, you most certainly do." He told her, hands moving up and down over her again, cupping and stroking and devouring her with his eyes, her skin white in the pale moonlight, a silver spirit against the black wood of the tree in the patchwork grey gardens.

Beth frowned, hoping it was hidden by the darkness or that he was too far into his lust to care. That hadn't be exactly what she'd meant by reassurance. She knew she pleased him. You would have to be blind not to know that, but she wanted more than is blind devotion to her body for one night.

"I mean about your heart, my Lord. I cannot see visions of my own future and I would not want you to cast me aside when I feel I could be of such use to you."

He paused then, lifting his head from where it had bent to kiss over her collar and breast bone, "Cast you aside, my dear? You should not give in to worrying about such things. You shall always be well taken care of, by my side." He told her, hands sliding back down her hips, stroking the warm skin of her thighs.
