“Bonjour, Monsieur Belmont.” Patience called, crossing the room to greet the rather sullen looking Frenchman. She could not stand the thought that someone at a party she should be the hostess of looked to be in such a sour mood as the young man did and she resolved to do everything within her power that night to make him smile. “Would you care for a drink? Or maybe a dance later on? I know I myself still have a few spaces left on my dance card, but there are any number of eligible young ladies here I could introduce you to.”

Oh no, people. Or person. As in the hostess. Jacques immediately regretted his career choice. Why the hell had he ever thought he was cut out to be representing France in a foreign country he disliked? He ought to have holed up in some Parisian garret studying case law.

However, Jacques forced a (sadly unconvincing) smile and bowed deeply. "Your Ladyship. I zank... euh, thank you for your, euh... kind invitation. I beg forgiveness; my English is still in great need of, euh... que fait dire... improvement? Yes, improvement." He cleared his throat and said, extremely carefully, "It would be a great honor if you would honor me with...." -he knew dances; his mother had made him take lessons- "ze gavotte, if you are not otherwise engaged?"

His accent was quite different to that of the Laurent’s and Angélique, more obvious and he himself seemed so formal, but still a dance was a dance and it got the man out of his shell.

"I think you speak English very well, Monsieur Belmont, better than my French I'm sure." Patience quickly checked her dance card to make sure that particular dance was still available and gave him a small smile. "I would be delighted to dance the gavotte with you."

He was attractive in his own way, for a civil servant, but his father’s rank didn’t change that he was of revolutionary stock. Still, one wouldn’t be impolite.

"Thank you; you are all kindness." Jacques paused, a little unsure of how to continue. If he had been writing such a conversation he could jump from each line of dialogue with uncommon speed and dexterity- and write it in twelve-syllable rhyming lines, too- but he found himself tongue-tied when it came down to it.

"I, ah... this is a very beautiful ball," he finished, a little lamely. "Are your parents 'ere?"

"Thank you," Patience said. She glanced around the hall, smiling at the man. "My father is here, yes, somewhere. Talking to someone I have no doubt. My mother has taken unwell and is laying down upstairs."

"I am sorry to hear it," Jacques replied politely. "I 'ave- have- heard very good things of your mother as a society hostess. Do your, euh... interests lie in zat- that way as well?"

There was a war to divert and all, and Mr. Pitt and Lord Grenville were being even more inscrutable than ever.

"Oh yes, very much." Patience said, trying very hard not to let her eyes wonder around the ballroom. She hoped that the young man was not making an offer himself to set her up as his hostess - she had heard that revolutionaries had strange thoughts on marriage and the roles of women which Patience was less than thrilled by. "I'd very much like to run my own household one day, throw parties like this one."

"An admirable sentiment," Jacques replied dutifully, wishing he were better at diplomacy. "I am, euh... still very much a stranger to this society. Pray forgive the, euh... bluntness of my questions, but are there 'ost- hostesses to whom I ought to pay my compliments? I have no wish to accidentally cause an international incident."

“Only me, Monsieur in my mother’s place.” Patience said. “But you’ve already said enough nice, flattering things you shouldn’t need to worry.”

"I am very glad," Jacques said, with some relief. "Thank you very much, cit- euh... Lady Patience." It was very strange to still be using titles.
