Reuben St. John : Visiting The Sick
Subject: Visiting the Sick
Who: Reuben St. John
Where: The Burnbridge Family house
Warnings: Some pervy thoughts
Open to: Fabian Burnbridge

Judge Burnbridge was out already this morning, and one of the menservants showed him upstairs towards Fabian's study. He knew his way already, so hardly needed to be show the way, but when he entered the room he was surprised that Fabian wasn't already there. He frowned, setting down his book bag on the table and looking about. There was no sign of the boy, or that the little study had been used yet that day. Everything was still neatly put away as it had been by maids. And then he heard voices down the hall, the voice of the Burnbrige's housekeeper.

He frowned, stepping out the room and glancing down the corridor, following the sound. It seemed to be coming from one particular room, and he tapped carefully on the door before opening it. Fabian was there, in front of a roaring fire, even though the weather was hardly cold outside. He seemed paler, shivery, wrapped only in sheets, naked aside of that. Reuben felt his pulse quicken and his mouth dry and he felt disgusted with himself. Instead, he stepped into the room, the thick steam clearing his mind but making breathing difficult.  "Fabian?" He asked, glancing from the boy laid before the fire to the large tin bath, ice-cubes floating about in the water. "Fabian, what's wrong?"

Although he knew it was wrong, although he knew he was touching the boy for his own selfish pleasure, he couldn't stop. "But we haven't done your other leg yet." He said, with a try throat. "Don't you like it, Fabian? If it hurts, we'll stop."

Fabian nodded, his face flushed red but he knew he was being silly. Rueben was just doing this to be kind and he didn't want to cause another awkward moment like they'd had before.
"No, it doesn't hurt. Not at all." He said, biting his lip. "It feels good actually. I should ask my Doctor if he doesn't think this is better for me than being thrown into ice water."

Reuben nodded, beginning to rub the sore, weak muscles of the boy's other leg. "I think more walking would do you twice as much good as anything else." He said, flashing the boy a smile. "Or a trip to Bath. I was talking to one of my parishioners a day or so ago and she told me the waters there had done her health a world of good. Perhaps your Doctors and uncle should arrange for you to spend a week or so there."

"Bath?" Fabian said, the hope in his voice obvious but it died shortly afterwards. "No, uncle would never allow that. He says the roads are dangerous - there are bandits - and he could hardly take the time off to come to Bath with me and he'd never let me go alone."

"You can never be safer than when you travel with a man of God." Reuben pointed out, although he could not help but feel Fabian would be much safer in the company of any man of God who was not himself. "I am sure, if it could cure you, your Uncle would allow you. It might be wise, none the less, to hire a guard or two to keep you safe, but I think that it might be an idea."

"Would you ask him?" Fabian pleased. "I've tried talking to him but he constantly refuses to listen to me. I'm sure if you put forward the idea and promised to accompany me then he would have to listen."

Reuben considered this a moment, before nodding. "I'll ask. But I have to speak to him about it after our trip to the library. I wouldn't want him to think we were asking for too much. If you can cope with a day at the library, hopefully that will help convince your Uncle you are strong enough to go on such a long journey." He suggested. But while he spoke, he couldn't help but think of the long journey between London and bath, a good two days at least, which meant an over-night stay with Fabian away from his over-protective uncle.

Sighing, Fabian nodded his agreement. "I'd rather go to Bath than to the library." He said, looking up at Rueben. "It was such a nice idea, and I do want to go it's just that I want to get better."

"A trip the the library would probably prepare you better for the journey to Bath than anything else." Reuben explained, "I... I'm worried that if you don't begin to build your strength up now that the journey to Bath will do you more harm then good." He said, truly worried.about the boy.

Fabian nodded. Rueben was right of course, if he could build up his strength and show his uncle he could withstand trips it was more likely that he would be allowed to go to Bath. "I think that probably a good idea, yes."

Reuben smiled, leaning forwards and stroking over the boy's cheek with his thumb. "When you think things though, you come to the right conclusions, Fabian. Besides, if your uncle granted you a trip to the Library and you decided not to go, he would hardly be likely to grant any other requests in future, would he? He would just think you were going to change your mind again, and he would not go to the trouble."

"Yes, Reuben." He said. His uncle did look for excuses to think Fabian was as touched in the head as his mother had been and changing his mind so quickly on something he'd been so excited about before would be more than likely to convince him.

Reuben shifted away, sitting up straight and resting his hand back on the boy's legs. "I suppose that you and I should get on with what we're here for, don't you?" He said, reaching for one of his teaching texts. "Do you want to study here, or in the other room?"

Fabian settled back on the pillows, sighing.
"I think staying here would be best, wouldn't it?" He said. "With my legs being as bad as they are moving again probably wouldn't be good for them, or your back."

The priest couldn't help but grin at the young man again. "You weren't heavy. And don't you think I can carry you?" He teased, "Men of god are always weak, hm?" He said, still grinning.

"Oh no! No, I didn't mean anything like that! I know you are strong, Rueben, from the work you do - all the cleaning at the Church and tending to the poor. I didn't mean anything by it!" Fabian said, feeling more than embarrassed.

Reuben smiled at him, "Don't be silly, Fabian, I was only joking. I hardly do any back-breaking labour either." He added, passing a book over the study book. "Now, head down. Your uncle wouldn't want you to waste time..."
