The sunlight on the pond caught Lalla's eye, and she stared.
It shimmered, rippled, danced with the breeze over the surface, fell to careless abandon in the water while still safe in the sky all the while. A curious thing, to be sure. How it could project itself, be so free yet remain so steady all at once, giving life to everything on the planet. How extraordinary. There was no God. There was only the sun.
Lalla mentally stored that idea for a future piece of work, perhaps a poem. And still she stared, blank faced, as she sat on the bench, the flowers lying across her lap. Red flowers and yellow flowers and blue flowers. She'd wanted flowers, London flowers, not Surrey flowers, and so she'd taken her secret journey and had found a florist. And now she had her flowers, and so she'd taken to a park, sitting down, becoming distracted by the water.
"Someone has to die," She murmured to herself, tapping her fingers against her leg, the only movement besides the movement of her lips that she made. "Someone has to die." She repeated the statement, quieter now, and savoured it, rolled it around her mouth, tasted it on her tongue. Someone has to die. She was talking about her latest novel, but it was a phrase that could apply to anything and everything.
"Someone has to die."
