Call to Prayer
Subject: The Sunday Service
Where: A London Parish
Who: Reuben St. John
Warnings: None
Open to: All

The service went well. He hadn't tumbled over the delivery of the psalms, and his voice hadn't trembled through the lines of the Lord's Prayer as they had done the first time he had done the service by himself, with only the priest to watch over from the choir pews. Perhaps later he would admit to himself that he had not seen any of the faces in the crowd of parishioners, only the mass in front of his pulpit, and it had been as much as he could bear- the faithful faces of so many turned towards him, seeing him as holy, pure, untainted. He had caught himself once, on the verge of confession, but instead calmly managed to direct the congregation into the next hymn.

Now it was all over, thank goodness and light, and he could feel the tension leave his body as he walked down the steps, ready to bless his audience and talk to them individually on their way out. He hoped this wouldn't be as grueling as the service itself; normally it was hardly a task, but something today, something about the rustle of the wind in the yew trees in the grave-yard surrounding the church made him feel less at ease than he had been before, and he felt the nerves returning as he dried his sweating palms on his cassock.

Fabian enjoyed Sundays more than any of day of the week because it was the only time his Uncle allowed him outside the house, all though it was still within his supervision and with most of the household there in case something befell him.

Allowed a few moments alone at the end of service he sought out Father St. John to congratulate him. He knew Reuben must have been frightened but it had been quite impeccable.
"See," He said as he reached the front of the line that had formed. "I told you that you had nothing to worry about."

Reuben couldn't contain his smile, delighted with the praise although he knew ego was bad for the soul. "Thank you, Fabian. I hope it has inspired at least some of our fellow men to be good Christians until next Sunday." He said, patting the boy's thin shoulder. "You don't think it was too dry, do you?" He said after a moment, leading the boy away from the dangerous steps on which he might trip and hurt himself. The boy's uncle had on more than on occasion made certain that Father St. John knew exactly how to care for the poor, sickly child.

"No, not at all. I thought it was very good." Fabian said as Father St. John led him away. He had very little to compare it to, certainly nothing to which a sermon would appear dry - only endless doctors visits and days wrapped up in bed. "The church yard is very pretty." He ventured after a moment. "You keep very good care of it."

"I tidied it up just for your visit. I can't go around letting your uncle think I don't do my work as I should." He explained, flickering another smile. "Would you like a walk? I could do with one myself. Still a little... energized." He explained, the mix of nerves and delight at Fabian's presence, and that shadow of guilt at that delight, making him fidgety.

Fabian laughed softly. "No you didn't. I know it's one of your jobs." He glanced over his shoulder towards the church door, fearful that his uncle would appear soon and demand they visit Lucy's grave and then start home. "A short walk and we mustn't go too far." He agreed, still looking at the Church.

Reuben nodded, "Just a little walk, then. To the Yew tree and back?" He said, pointing to the old tree growing at the cross-roads in the path, where the path to the church from the street met that which ran the length of the graveyard. "And that's not true! I gave it an extra thorough tidy this morning, just for you and your uncle. And it looks all the better for it. And did you notice someone had polished the pews? That was me, too." As punishment for his sins, he'd spent half the night on his knees, polishing the great bloody things.

Fabian looked towards the Yew tree. That would hardly be too long a walk, and his Uncle could hardly object too much to it, especially if he was walking with Reuben who he knew his Uncle approved of. "Yes, I think that would be fine." He said, waiting for Reuben to escort him. "Did you really do all that work? It must be a very hard life."

"Hard but enjoyable. Idle thumbs, as they say." Reuben replied, "Your life must be just as hard- without the chance to go outside and see the world without permission from doctors." He said, genuinely feeling sorry for the boy. He couldn't imagine the sort of life he would should he not have had his own good health, trapped inside. "Perhaps I could bring you one or two more books to read? I imagine you've swept through your uncle's library like a wild wind, and it might do your studies some good."

Fabian smiled, although he didn't feel very much like doing that. He didn't want to be reminded of his ill-health, although it was always at the forfront of his mind. Sundays with their trips to the Church and his mother's grave were his only outlet to the world outside his Uncle's house.
He glanced at Reuben, having been lost in his own thoughts.
"Oh yes, quite. I'd love something new to read - although you may have to run your suggestions by Uncle first."

There are three Great Danes on It's Me or the Dog and I really want one. They are just beautiful and massive, although apparently have a short life-span.

Well, I'm sure they'll be room for one at some point, love. Also, I miss you.

"That is true enough. Although I can't think that he would refuse any works by famous Christian scholars. Perhaps some early British history?" He suggested. "Or is there anything you want? Any books you've not read yet but want to?" He asked, as they headed towards the Yew.

Our Sky Broadband just arrived! And I miss you too

"Oh no, I doubt he could." Fabian agreed, although the thought of any more dull, approved books set him shivering. When they reached the Yew tree he turned to look at Reuben with a very serious expression. "I want to read something adventures, a novel. Maybe...could you get me something by M. Rochester? You needn’t show it to my Uncle, I know he disapproves but his...friends son writes them and I would like to read at least one."

Awesome! Do you want to set it up, or shall I help tomorrow?

"M. Rochester?" Reuben repeated, the name familiar. "I'll do my best." He agrees with a small smile, hand moving back to the boy's shoulder. He'd never read any of them himself, but he knew the name. Probably some sort of scandalous romantic story. "Are you sure they won't over-excite you or strain your heart, Fabian? I don't want to bring anything to the house that might hurt you." He didn't, but there was something inside of him that prevented him telling the boy about moral decency and the wickedness of novels.

We can't set it up till we have the letter confirming our installation date. So I shall wait and hopefully that will come tomorrow!

"I'm sure I can deal with a novel, Rueben." He said, forgetting himself and referring to the young man by his first name. "And if it upsets me I will simply set it down and ask for the maids to take it away. Does that reassure you?"

Fingers crossed that it does!

Reuben looked at Fabian with some surprise as his first name was used, not normally hearing it from anyone but the priest of the parish and those he saw in the evenings... and then the two thoughts seemed to cross paths, and for a second he saw himself, in the evening, with Fabian, the boy laid back on soft sheets, groaning the deacon's name...

He brought his hands to his face, rubbing hard at his eyes and forcing the picture out and slightly cursing himself. How could he think like that, with the young man right in front of him now, with the church and all his parishioners less than a few meters away? His demons were growing bolder and bolder.

"I'm sure a novel won't be more than you can handle." He said, once he'd recovered himself. "Forgive me, a passing headache. Caused by the incense."

Fabian watched him with a worried expression, and reached out to touch Reuben's arm gently.
"Should we sit down? There's a bench in the graveyard" He ventured. He knew that well enough, it was just across from his own mother's grave. He felt he could find it when blindfolded he'd been there so often.

Reuben nodded, smiling slightly, forcing the demons back down into the dark depths of his soul. No doubt they would be out in force tonight. "A quiet sit-down would do us both a world of good." He agreed, guiding Fabian towards the bench, and, as he too knew, the grave of Lucy Burnbridge. "I'm sure you're uncle will follow us in a moment." He added, to remind himself as well as to stop the boy from wondering. A misplaced hand on the boy's thigh, sitting too close on a spacious bench and everything would be ruined.

"Your uncle wants me to do a special memorial service on your mother's birthday." He said as they walked, glancing from the gravel path to the young, attractive, innocent boy besides him.

"Yes, probably." Fabian agreed, glancing over his shoulder as if he expected to see his uncle bearing down on the any moment. It wasn't that he didn't love uncle Augustus very much it was simply that he wanted to spend some time with someone else for a while. "I think that would be a lovely idea. I wish she'd lived just for a little while so I might have known her."

He wanted to understand why his uncle was so devoted to her memory.

"I am certain she was a wonderful person. Your uncle has told me a little about her, not a great deal, but some. She sounds like a caring, sweet person. She would have wanted to bring you up." Reuben says, arm wrapping around the boy's shoulder in a comforting manner. "But now she's with God, and no doubt watching you and is proud of you." He told the boy, "Just as your uncle is proud of you. I think having you with him has helped him a great deal. If he had lost both you and your mother it may have broken his heart. You're lucky to have an uncle so devoted to your upbringing."

"I think she was very sweet, yes, but I don't know how much she could have cared for me, uncle says she's was unwell often." He said, leaning into the comforting touch.

It was so nice to be touched by someone who meant it purely as a gesture of warmth and consolidation. He was so tired of medicinal touches, prodding and poking and his uncle would hardly touch him as if he thought Fabian was made of glass and might shatter if he was too rough.

He looked up at Rueben, at his kind face and the softness in his eyes and felt a blush rise to his cheeks.
"We, we should sit down..." He said. Too long without loving contact had made him inappropriate, given him inappropriate thoughts.

"I don't know. Perhaps a child to take care of would have eased her recovery." He suggests, leading the boy towards the bench and letting him settle down, his arm slipping away from around Fabian, sitting down next to him. "Perhaps you could have helped each other. But no matter. You're getting better, your uncle tells me so, and that's the important thing now."

Fabian's cheeks had gone red through excersion. Clearly the walk up the sloping path to the bench had tired him, and Reuben could almost sence the boy's quickened pulse. He knew, then, he should have kept his mind blank, those images of the writhing, squirming groaning boy reimerging in his mind with double the potancy. He almost jumped up from the bench, but instead took a deep breath and forced the demons back again, away, far away. "Better not exhuat yourself, Fabian, or your uncle will suspect me of chasing you up and down the hill."

"I don't think so, her illness was in her head. I'm not sure anything could have been done to help her." Fabian said. He knew he sounded harsh, almost cruel when he spoke about his mother and he didn't mean to be. She had been an innocent, undeserving of her fate but he was so tired of being always judged by her standards. He glanced at Rueben, smiling widely.

"Really? He said that? I wish he'd say the same to me. I do feel I could stand a little more time outside or maybe a few more visits from friends."

He laughed, gripping the wood of the bench to remind himself how silly he had been a moment ago. Rueben was so kind, it was only natural he might react more to that kindness then was intended. "No, never. Uncle trusts you."

Reuben smiled slightly, patting the boy's knee. "I think you and your uncle together would have helped her enough. But we can not change the world or what has come before." He said, hand coming to rest on Fabian's leg.

"He said that. But perhaps he and your physicans don't yet you believe you well enough to venture too far." Reuben explained. Personally, he believed that the boy was much better than he had been, well enough to venture out now, as long as there was someone was there to ensure Fabian did not get into diffeculty. "I think your uncle trusts me, a little. Enough to look after you on occasions. Perhaps he will allow me to take you to the library at some point, if you continue to get better like you have been."

Fabian glanced up at him, the strange warm feeling spreading through him again and he gently pushed Rueben's hand away but he gripped it at Rueben's next words.

"I would love to go to the library. Do you think we could?" He asked, eyes wide with excitement.

"I am sure we could ask your uncle and see if we might go to further your studies. He may insist we take a carriage there and back, but an afternoon in a library might do you good. I shall ask him, next time I come to see you." He promises, lips also turning upwards in a smile, as if the boy's excitement was contagious. "Would you like that?"

"Oh, would you really?" He asked, thinking what a kind friend he had in Rueben. Fabian didn't think there were that many men in the world who would risk his uncle's possible wrath over a short half-day trip but Rueben obviously had the love of God - it gave him an almost serene appearance. He never had to be afraid of anything. "I would love to!"

"I would, Fabian. There's no reason you shouldn't go to the library and expand your knowledge. Your uncle will understand that." Reuben smiled, patting the boys knee again. "And you'll be taken care of properly and looked after, you have my word."

Fabian smiled, leaning back against the bench - a day out in the library with only Reuben to guide him. He'd be allowed to look at any book that took his interest. He might be allowed a little fiction for a change. "You should ask him as soon as he gets here." Fabian said, sitting up and looking down to were they had been in case Augustus was already looking for them.

"I don't think that it would be best to ask him now, Fabian." Reuben had to point out, although the idea of spending the afternoon with the boy, without any hinderance from his over-bearing uncle was making his heart pound. "I shall ask your uncle afterwards. I don't think he'd want to be asked at the moment, considering what you and he are here to do. Your uncle always seems very preoccupied on Sundays."

"Don't look so miserable." Reuben said, almost unable to look at the boy's downturned lips and sorrowful gaze. "I'll ask first thing on Monday morning. When I bring you those books, so you'll have something to look forward to tomorrow." He said, patting the boy's leg again, smiling at him, trying to encourage the young man to cheer up.

Reuben would also be going to bed early- although he meant early in the morning after several hours at the Bridge Theatre. Fabian would at least be rested before Monday's lessons. "You're right, and after being out and about so long today, your uncle will no doubt think you need a good night's rest."
