It was raining in the country, with the drops fleeting down with increased force. There was a slight breeze to slant the rain and that if anything made it more familiar to Daniel as he stood in the grounds soaking up the drops. The calm he felt out here was refreshing, much preferable to the sudden bout of panic he had experienced indoors. Daphne was about to tell her family they were engaged and though he knew he should be there he had had to go outside. Thoughts had haunted him all night; what if they refused? What if they shunned her? What if Daniel had to go back to London without his darling Daphne by his side?
Hence, an attack had begun to creep over him and he found himself desperate for the calm seas of Dover. Knowing that the gardens would have to do he had distanced himself far enough from the house and was now looking up at the rain and the trees, surveying the grounds as he took deep breaths.
