Not Alone
Item: Letter from unknown source to Demetri Blake
Warnings: NC-17
Open to: narrative, but open if someone wants to find him

Details are late and you have missed your drop. Perhaps you should focus on what you need to rather than spend time at the "theatre". If you do not deliver news at the prementioned location by 1pm Friday, perhaps your distractions will need to be removed. Do not trifle with this; you do know the consequences of your actions.

Demetri crumpled up the note and tossed it over his desk. This was becoming unbearable. He was lying to his family, his friends, and now Nell, maybe even the Bridge Theatre was in danger. He sighed as he stood and went to the window. If only he knew who he was dealing with, he would take care of them himself. But he knew the threats were real. The question was, did he warn those at the theatre... did he tell Harry of the danger. Doing that would likely mean he'd have to tell him why and he couldn't do that.

What scared him most was that he was being followed. Who know how far they reached and exactly how much they DID follow him. Perhaps staying at Blake Estate wouldn't be a terribly bad idea. Christopher could take care of himself, and he dare say so could Lucas, but he would always be there to protect Olivia.

He leaned against the window and glanced out. He needed help to do what he wanted to do but he also just needed help in general. The question remained just who could he trust.

Harry sat in the carriage opposite Nell, glancing between the boy and the window. Since the arrival of Slater outside the Theatre, it was clear he did not like to leave the boy unaccompanied. He did not know how much he trusted this Demetri Alexandre either, considering what Nell had told him about the charming, attractive, young man. Younger than Harry, richer than Harry, and all in all, the sort of man likely to fill Nell's head with all sorts of nonsense.

"Remember Nell, we have a business night ahead of us. Two hours, no more." He reminded, possibly for the fifth or sixth time that evening, as the coach stopped outside the man's address. "So I trust you will behave and keep to your schedule." He adds, stepping out of the Hackney carriage and helping the boy down. Harry couldn't stay angry with Nell, never, "You do look very beautiful." He finished, as way of softening his previous words. "I'll be waiting in the carriage."

Nell glanced up at Harry, unsure why the man had been so strange with him on the ride over. He knew he was shaken by seeing Slater but he'd been angry all day.

"Wait in the carriage? Harry, I'm sure Mr. Alexandre wouldn't mind if you waited in the drawing room or kitchens." He said, linking arms with Harry waiting to be escorted to the front door where he knocked twice, still glancing up at Harry every now and again.

Demetri had returned to his desk, the anonymous note still had him quite rattled when he heard a carriage and shortly after the knock at the door. His first instinct was to reach for the pistol in the side drawer.

Then he relaxed. If someone was coming after him, they certainly wouldn't knock. He stood again and went to the window and looked out to see Nell, and Harry Fisher. With everything else, he'd forgotten his appointment. Demetri sighed and retrieved his coat as he made his way through the living room to the door, the letter forgotten in his study for the moment.

He smiled as he opened the door. "Nell, how very prompt you are." He looked up to Harry and extended his hand. "Mr. Fisher, it is quite good to see you again." Demetri stood back, opening the door more. "Won't you both please come in?"

Harry inclined his head, "A very kind offer, Mr. Alexandre. Thank you." He said, gently easing in Nell first with a slight touch of his hand to the small of the boy's back. "Although I assure you there is no need for you to treat me as a guest. I was only here to escort Nell. These are, as the French continue to warn us, dangerous times." He gave their client an indulgent smile, as if to say he was hardly worried, but would humour those who thought Nell required an escort. "I was going to wait in the carriage, unless you have need of me?" He asked suddenly, wondering if there was anything but politeness that had caused Demetri to extend his invitation to the pimp as well as the boy.

"Harry can stay, can't he?" Nell asked, missing the hint of worry in Harry's voice or in Demetri's tone and demeanour, still unwilling to let Harry spend the next few hours alone in his carriage. He glanced around the house, having been there before but still learning his way about it.

Demetri smiled. Maybe it was a good thing that they'd arrived when they did. "Yes Harry can stay. I wouldn't mind at all." He smiled cordially at Harry. "There's no need for you to stay in the carriage the whole time, truly. Please, make yourself at home."

He led his guests to this sitting room. "Can I get either of you something to drink?"

Perhaps some time relaxing with company would settle his mind and his nerves. He didn't want to make Harry suspicious if there was no reason, nor to worry Nell either.

Harry smiled slightly. It was warmer here than the carriage at least, and staying inside would give him an oppertunity to look about the place and learn more about their mysterious Mr Alexandre. Nell, Harry knew, would keep the man busy for quite some time, more than enough for him to have a look for any thing of interest. And then Harry would still have time to pour himself of the best liquor Mr Alexandre had to hand, and finish off the chapter of the little book he carried in his pocket.

"A drink would be most welcome, sir, a scotch especially so, if you had some." He says, glancing to Nell and smiling slightly, eyes bright. "But I would not want to delay you both if you had an evening planned."

Nell smiled, more than delighted that Harry was willing to wait inside for a change. He followed Demetri, glancing to check that he would be allowed something before he asked.

"I wouldn't mind a small glass of brandy"

Demetri walked over to the cabinet and retrieved two bottles and three glasses of appropriate size. "I just so happen to have a very good bottle of 18 year old Scotch," he said as he poured some for Harry, "and a good bottle of Brandy that I believe Nell will like too," he said, pouring himself some of the Scotch and bringing Harry and Nell their drinks.

He smiled and motioned for them to sit. "Please sit down. If there is anything further I can get you, please don't hesitate to ask." There. Good, casual talking. Nothing bad about that. Company was good and he could deal with the letter and his 'acquaintance at a later time.

"I've heard that you're looking to expand the repetoire of your theatre Mr. Fisher. What sort of plays are you looking to add?"

"Only the Classics, Mr Alexandre. Shakespeare, Marlow. Perhaps later in the year, if the boy's continue to do so well, we'll move onto other plays. There are several young playwrights popular enough in London at the moment, and I've been considering buying a script, if a suitable one comes along." Harry replies as he takes the glass, murmuring a thank you.

"You do not have to worry about entertaining me, Mr Alexandre. Nell is here, after all, at your request." He said, wondering if they had simply been invited because the young man was lacking in company, and not the sort of company the boys usually supplied.

Nell clutched at his glass, taking a small sip from it and watching the two men talking together.

"And I'm going to be the star, aren't I, Harry?" He said, wanting to be included a little in their conversation although he knew he really should stay quite when Harry was discussing business with clients, even if it was only about the plays the boy's performed. "We did a new play for a party in the country. It was very sad. I had to die, shot in a duel."

"It is no bother I assure you." Demetri smiled at them both but Harry was right. They only had a short time together.

"I have no doubt you'll be the star for a long time to come Nell," he said, taking another sip from his drink. "I'm sure your death was glorious as well." He turned attention to Harry. "We will go now I think but please feel free to make yourself comfortable. Anna is in the kitchen should you desire more refreshments, and my library is 2nd door behind you should want to relax in there."

Demetri stood up and smiled at Nell. "Shall we go then?"

"I'm sure that I will manage very well, Mr Alexandre." Harry assures, reaching into his jacket to pull out a thin volume, opening it and unfolding the corner of the page that had kept it marked. He smiled slightly, and nodded to Nell, waiting for both of them to leave the room before turning back to his book. Within a few minutes he would be alone and unwatched, and he would be able to poke about the man's rooms as much as he liked.

[continued from here]

Demetri smiled and nodded. He did worry but he wouldn't voice it. Nell did seem fine and that would be alright. "Oh I almost forgot," he said before offering Nell a shilling. "Thank you for coming over Nell."

He blushed in spite of himself at Nell's comment. He'd rather very much been enjoying himself minutes ago and as glad Nell had been too. "Let's go talk to Harry," Demetri said leading out of his room.

"Oh, thank you" Nell said, pocketing the shilling quickly. "It was my pleasure, and I hope you invite me again."

He let Demetri lead them back downstairs and into the drawing room, hoping Harry would not be making trouble. The last thing he needed was for Demetri to be convinced he wished to become a patron and have Harry ruin it by being caught with his hand in the man's desk.

"It was my pleasure too," Demetri said and tried not to laugh too terribly at the lame joke he'd made. "I would very much like to invite you again Nell."

They made their way downstairs; he hoped Mr. Fisher had not been too terribly inconvenienced in the time the two have been away.

Harry had the sense not to be caught looking through someone else's private papers, and was sat comfortably in the same seat the two had left him before. He'd managed several pages since they had retreated upstairs, as well as having had a general poke around the rooms downstairs. He'd not found anything too scandalous, but hadn't expected to, so there was no lose there. And the liquor he had been left with had been rather good.

He looked up as the two returned to the room, folding down the corner of his page. "Ah, there you are. I trust you enjoyed your discussions?" He said, shutting the book and slipping it back into his pocket.

Demetri smiled as they got downstairs, Nell walking ahead of him and nodded. Harry was still seated on the couch and looked fairly comfortable. "We did... did indeed. I hope you found everything down here to your liking?" He moved around to the chair and sat, motion for Nell to take a sit as well. "Can I get you another Scotch? Nell would you like some more Brandy?"

Nell settled, a little gingerly, on one of the chairs.
"A brandy would be lovely, thank you." He repled before turning his attention to Harry. "Demetri has something he would like to ask you." He said rather sweetly.

More brandy was quickly retrieved for Nell and Demetri smiled as he offered it to him. And then he turned to Harry as he sat down once again. "Nell is quite right. Please forgive me if any formality is overstepped but I would like to give you money for the theatre, well you know, to help out with it. A patron of sorts, if you would have me," he said, nervous but glad to not be showing it. "I'm not exceedingly wealthy but I am comfortable, and would like to do it."

Harry raised an eyebrow, glancing briefly to Nell before looking back to his host, folding his leg over the other, fingers curling around his knee. "A patron of the whole theatre, Mr Alexandre? As in, of the arts?" He said, secretly amused but not showing it. This was important, after all. "A patron of the building, of the productions? Or are you more interested in supporting the boys? Or one in particuluar?" He asked, looking to Nell again, as if to demonstrate what he meant. "I assure you one has many more benefits than the other."

Demetri looked at Harry, trying to be serious now, his hands resting firmly on his own legs. He supposed he should have found all this out beforehand, but no matter. "I suppose it would depend on what would be more beneficial in the long run. The best use of my patronage Mr. Fisher. I am, after all, a fan of the arts, among other things." He thought quickly, glancing just a bit at Nell too, pondering the choices. Patron no matter what, he'd be able to keep an eye out on it, Harry and Nell, keep them out of danger.

"I would say, Mr Alexandre, that it would be better if you sponsored one of the boys. No only would it get you more beneficial treatment, but I think it would be better for all concerned. The Bridge Theatre itself is not in need of any particularly special care, its upkeep is maintained, but the actors... well." He smiles slightly, "If you were to sponsor one of the boys, Mr Alexandre, Nell, for example, you would be able to see him far more often, for longer, and I would be quite happy to allow you both to meet outside the theatre without an escort."

Demetri smiled and then looked at Nell and back to Harry "I certainly have no qualms about supporting one of the boys certainly. It is more about helping after all." He looked over to Nell again and smiled. "Would you like that, to be able to see each other outside the theatre, for me to help you out?"

He smiled warmly at Demetri.
"I would like that very much."
