Adelaide Newbury- Exploring the streets of London
Subject: Exploring the streets of London
Where: London
Who: Adelaide Newbury
Open to: Basically, anyone in London.

Adelaide was proud of herself and her excellent ability to sneak from the house without any of her nurses noticing until it was too late. Of course, there was a risk to this now that she was in London and staying with her father for a short time. As a Judge he was strict about the rules in his household but, whatever punishment she would get upon returning home would hopefully be worth it. She wore a soft pink dress that made her pale girl look more washed out than usual. The only bit of real color on her was the large bouquet of brightly colored flowers that she was currently paying for at a small flower shoppe.

Holding the bundle of flowers in her hand she exited back out into the sunlight, a light rose colored hat blocking the sun from her doll-like face and hollow eyes. She looked lonely as she traveled down the cobblestone street at a cause pace, a lost smile upon her young face. The city air wasn't a fresh as one could have wished, but it met the standards of the widow who had spent nearly half a year in solitude.

As she passed a group of young boys outside an Academy she hugged the flowers close to her chest and lowered her head, fear filling her once emotionless blue eyes. She wasn't all too found of their rough-housing.

Aimé found a stroll usually did him good. It at least allowed him to get out from under his father and brother's feet and leave them alone to their plotting.

He glanced both this way and that, catching sight of Adelaide across the street from him. She seemed distressed and he could guess the reason for that as he caught sight off the group of young men. He crossed the street hurriedly to greet her.
"Madam. We met at the Ambassador's ball? Aimé Laurent? Allow me to escort you, Madam?" He asked, bowing a little, aware of sniggers behind him as he did so.

Adelaide hadn't known what to do as she hesitated about whether or not to pass through the group of young men. However, when she heard somebody addressing her she turned quickly to face them, not knowing who it was until he reminded her. The look of fear in her eyes grew for a moment as he came closer and then disappeared quickly when she remembered.

"Thank you, Mister Laurent," the girl said gently as she loosened the nervous grip she had made around the bouquet of flowers. "How are you this afternoon?"

He offered her his arm to escort her past the academy.
"I am very well, Madam, and all the better for having met you again. It is a very fine afternoon is it not?" He was pleased to have met up with her, it was always nicer to take a walk in company than alone and it would keep him occupied and away from the darker thoughts that plagued his mind.

Adelaide took his arm gently, clinging to it slightly as they walked. It was obvious she had been nervous, for some reason, at the idea of having to pass the younger men on her own. "They are frightening, yes?" she softly once they were past, wondering if everyone was a fearful as she around the rowdy boys.

"It is lovely out," she admitted. "I am thankful my nurses allowed me out of the house this afternoon." Of course, being let out was a bit of an exaggeration, as she had gone out without them knowing.

"Yes," Aimé agreed, watching the young men thoughtfully. He disliked and distrusted them on principle. After all, the revolution had sprung from such young men.

"They are giving you more freedom? That is good to hear. You shouldn't stay in the house all the time." He said, leading them down a little ally way and out into a larger street, across from which, surrounded by an iron-railing fence lay Regents park. "I thought you might enjoy a walk here" He offered. "It is certainly safer."

Adelaide cast a nervous glance back to the men outside the Academy before turning her attention back to him. "My first husband, Edgar, he didn't believe that such behavior was appropriate for young men," she said gently, before smiling. "But I suppose that was possibly just his obedience from being a General that made him think that way." She fell silent a moment, reminiscing on the memories she had had with him.

Finally she smiled slightly again and nodded. "Yes, this is much safer than the streets," she agreed. "I have not been here in some time, I have forgotten how peaceful it is."

"I happen to be in agreement with your first husband. I believe such behaviour is simply mob mentality and I for one would rather be above such things"

He smiles back at her. "I have only been coming here a little while but I have taken to it."

Adelaide bit down on her bottom lip gently for a moment before nodding.

"Yes, it was once my favorite place here in London before I went away," she admitted. "It's a shame that there are no places left in Paris as peaceful as it is here."

Aimé nodded, he had privately thought the same thing. He wondered what the beautiful gardens and parks at home had become now -grounds for executions? Places to hide the bodies?

"Where would you like to walk to, Madam? I believe there is a pond...or would you rather simply a long stroll?"

Adelaide looked around for a moment. It was strange for her to be outside, a fact that her pale skin attested to. Of course, she was enjoying if very much. She kept hold of her bouquet of flowers in one hand before pointing to a path a little ahead of them and to the right.

"The pond is that way," she said gently, as if this was her way of answering his question. "When I was younger my brother Benjamin would take me to feed the birds there," she said with a smile. "Of course, that was some time ago, Mister Laurent, but I assume the pond is still there."

"The pond it is then." He said, leading them down the path she had pointed out. "Forgive my curiosity, but who are the flowers for?"

She blushed slightly at his question. Her smile grew a little as she looked at the flowers in her hands before turning her attention back to him. "For myself, Mister Laurent" she admitted gently. "It seems that my father's taste in decor is rather dark and dreary, I thought they might add some life to my room while I am staying with him."

"What a lovely thought. You should have something nice to look at while you are staying with him. Who knows? He may be inspired to redecorate?" Aimé laughs good naturedly. "They are beautiful flowers."

"I see the idea of him redecorating very unlikely," she said softly. "He is too consumed with his work these days to worry about such things," she explained, even though he had always been one who was dedicated to their work. "It seems that his entire estate has taken on a rather depressing feel since my mother passed, but I suppose that is what happens when a home is left to the mercy of four men."

She smiled and glanced back down at the flowers in her hands. "Thank you, Mister Laurent. I tried to find the brightest ones I could."

"I believe so. My father moved us to Paris after my mother's death, there was a gloom over the old house." He said. It had been a confusing time. His father had not explained what would be happening but had simply packed up his family and moved.

Adelaide nodded in understanding. "That is why I chose to remain in Paris," she admitted. "I find my memories here in London too harsh to face." It looked for a moment that the young woman was close to tears, however her mood was quick to change.

They were nearing the pond and Adelaide's lifeless eyes lit up at the sight of a group of baby ducks following their mother as they learned to swim. "Aren't they adorable, Mister Laurent?" she asked.

"But are you not in danger in Paris?" Aimé asked, wondering how the young woman had avoided the Council given the fate of her husband.

He smiles, both pleased by the change in Adelaide and the small ducks. It is calming to think whatever the events that life continues and blossoms.
"They are indeed, Madam. If only we had some bread to feed them."

"Danger, Monsieur?" Adelaide asked curiously, before shaking her head. She was perhaps in danger in Paris, but she did not worry herself with it. Mostly because she kept to herself, which helped her keep herself out of trouble with the Council. She never gave much thought to the world outside her apartment, not even when her third husband was sentenced.

Her eyes remained on the ducks, watching them curiously. "They are such innocent creatures," she said gently, her eyes continuing to follow the young ducklings. "They seem so frail compared to the rest of the world and yet they survive to face the harshness the world forces upon them everyday." There was a hint of wonder in her eyes as she glanced back to Aimé. "Perhaps things are easier when you stay close with one another, as they do."

"After what happened to your husband?" He asked, not wishing to push to hard but fearful for her safety.

"I would think so, Madam. Family and friends are so important in these dark times." He sighs softly - that has been true for him. He would be lost without his family, probably with his head on the block.

Adelaide bit her lip for a moment as she looked down. Slowly she shook her head again. "He made a mistake," she said softly. "But I do not worry about that," she admitted, still looking down. "I have always been able to return home to England without any problems," she added.

"Yes, I suppose you are right, Monsieur," she said with a small nod. Although it was hard for her to know, as her friends were few and her relationship with her family distant.

Aimé nodded, unwilling to push her any more in case he frightened the young woman. "I do hope it will always be so, Madam, but I hear the Council is beginning to tighten who they let out of France." That was true enough, at first they had simply rounded up the Aristocrats and those who helped them, now it was anyone who roused their suspicions. A young woman crossing between England and France who's husband had already fall foul of the revolution would certainly be of interest.

He nods, looking away from the small ducks, glancing out watching the other people walking in the park.

"I do not dwell on the negative results of my actions," Adelaide said softly. "If there is a price to pay for my travels to and from France then I will pay it," she admitted. She had no fear of falling under suspicion by the Council. Perhaps it was a bit morbid, but in her eyes the guillotine was a way to be with her husbands again.

She let her eyes remain on the ducks as she spoke, but finally she glanced over at him for a moment or two. Silently her lifeless gaze remained on him as she thought. Sighing she looked back down. "It's a shame that the world has become such a horrible place to live in," she said weakly.

Aimé leads her a little way away from the pond. "No, Madam. You must not think like that. It it hard, that is true, but it is not such a horrible place." He smiles fondly. "After all, new experience can lead to new ventures and new quintessences."

Adelaide followed him away from the pond, every so often allowing her gaze to linger on the flowers near the path. She finally forced a smile as she looked back to him and nodded in agreement. "I suppose you are right, Monsieur Laurent," she said softly. "It is just hard sometimes to look past all the negative things that have happened."

"But we should not dwell on them," He said, more forcefully than he meant to but he was in part trying to convince himself. The new life in England, although it had brought he new friends and Mercedes was still a shell of the life he had known in Paris and climbing the social ladder here was harder as he was starting not only as an outsider but as one completely without knowledge of the social morals. "If we do we shall only drag ourselves into despair."

I'm sorry. I meant acquaintances. I don't know where the other word came from!

Adelaide nodded in agreement. It was very easy for her to change conversations without dwelling on the previous one. She smiled as she delicately fixed a flower that had gotten a little squished in her bouquet. "Are you enjoying England, Monsieur Laurent? And your family as well? Do they enjoy it here?" she asked curiously as she glanced over to him.
