Marguerite York - Pas d'employés sans employeurs
Subject: A business deal, a job offer
Where: The Baron's residence in Grosvenor Square, London
Who: Marguerite York
Open to: Amandine, Olivier (if he's interested in following his wife), Mercedes (if he's around), Harry Fisher

Marguerite retreated to the gardens every morning after breakfast, whether it was pouring rain or blistering heat. As far as her husband was concerned, she went out there to read. As far as she was concerned, it was to write her letters in peace and quiet, away from prying eyes. How else could she find the best gossip?

While in London, her habits did not alter by far. Rather than spend her time indoors, she ordered the terrace windows opened wide and the room aired. When that did not help, she moved to the small terrace and tried to put her thoughts in order.

A servant, as usual, interrupted.

"A young woman is asking for you, Madam," he stammered. "She claims you gave her your card at the Ambassador's ball..."

Annoyance gave way to satisfaction. "Show her in."

He could not say he didn't trust her, because that simply was not true. But he didn't want to involve her, not in such a dangerous matter as this. At least for his indiscretions at the Embassy, he could not be tried by an English court. "Madam, I would tell you, but it is best I do not. A merchant travelling back and forth from France to England... sometimes finds stowaways." He shrugs, "And it is often out of my way to return them to their homeland. So I leave them at port and expect them make their own way back. It is not an uncommon practise."

"Ah, I see," she nods in understanding, wondering if indeed the Ambassador could go to such lengths for the government. It would've spoiled the party, to be sure.

"And still you attended. You must be very tired of life on land." Leaning her chin in her hand, she arches an eyebrow. "Unless of course there was someone there you absolutely had to see..."

"When there is no ship to sail, Madam, I have little other ways to find excitement. And there was, of course, the hope I would see you. I would attend Robespierre's own Ball if there was a chance I could speak to you." He smiled, "Of course, I feel that a party held by Robespierre would be very dull indeed..."

"Heavens, yes!" Marguerite laughs, her blush obvious and rare all at once. "Politics would be the appetizer and by desert half of the guests would be dead in the name of the Republic. There would be no pleasantries, no flattery... And you and I would never be welcome."

"But perhaps we could sneak in, and only stay for the wine before leaving? Wear a cockade and you will never be suspect, I have found." He laughs, "But perhaps that is an adventure best saved for day-dreaming, it would hardly be possible."

"Indeed, hardly possible," she agrees, nodding slowly. "At any rate, we'd be apprehended before we could set foot inside. A sad way to spend an evening. No, better parties with only a minimum of danger and high amounts of intrigue instead."

"Before we stepped foot inside? Perhaps, perhaps not." He smiles, glancing about the garden to see if anyone else was nearby. "I would say that you should come and allow me to prove it would not be so difficult, but..." He shrugs, "There are a very many reasons not to."

"There are?" Marguerite repeats, teasing him and her own interest. "Fear of death? Fear of the law?" It can't be fear of her husband; no matter the pretense, neither of them is that weak. "You have promised me adventure..."

"Very valid fears, madam. Fear of the repercussions, fear of guilt, fear of your husband and how he would have me ripped limb from limb if I survived and you did not?" Mercedes shrugs, "Perhaps it is an adventure we may have to delay. France is not safe enough for such games."

Marguerite sighs, agreeing despite herself. There's no amusement that could tempt her enough to risk ending up dead for no good reason at all.

"We shall contain our adventures to calmer waters, then. The Orient, perhaps. Or the Americas. I hear they've been aptly named the New World."

"I have never been to the Americas myself. One or two of my crewmen have, on their previous ships but I have only eve been as far as the Caribbean." He smiles, "But the Orient I think you would enjoy. Although perhaps not the voyage around the Cape." He smiles, "No one particularly enjoys that."
