Marguerite York - Pas d'employés sans employeurs
Subject: A business deal, a job offer
Where: The Baron's residence in Grosvenor Square, London
Who: Marguerite York
Open to: Amandine, Olivier (if he's interested in following his wife), Mercedes (if he's around), Harry Fisher

Marguerite retreated to the gardens every morning after breakfast, whether it was pouring rain or blistering heat. As far as her husband was concerned, she went out there to read. As far as she was concerned, it was to write her letters in peace and quiet, away from prying eyes. How else could she find the best gossip?

While in London, her habits did not alter by far. Rather than spend her time indoors, she ordered the terrace windows opened wide and the room aired. When that did not help, she moved to the small terrace and tried to put her thoughts in order.

A servant, as usual, interrupted.

"A young woman is asking for you, Madam," he stammered. "She claims you gave her your card at the Ambassador's ball..."

Annoyance gave way to satisfaction. "Show her in."

Amandine tried to make her features placid and disinterested but in truth she was greatly intrigued as to what she was actually suggesting. Blinking slightly and turning her head to the view as if she was contemplating.

"That might not be as bad as you make it sound - living with aged staff. It would be a nice change to hurried busybodies ridiculing you because you are French." Her eyes darkened then she looked back towards the woman. "The house would be in my care?"

Marguerite nodded slowly, growing more and more confident in her decision. The responsability wouldn't be small and she had no reason to grant the girl this chance, but something, somewhere seemed to have ruled it was to be so already.

"As I said, I have a maid. What I am lacking is a housekeeper I can trust. You are young and you may not have much experience in that respect, but you are French. I'd like to give you the chance to learn." A smile. "And who knows, a better position here might even sway your husband's pride."

That was true. If Olivier was sure that they would not be serving under the French woman and be keeping her home instead he would probably be more inclined to agree to Amandine's plan. They would have a larger responsibility, and if Amandine was stuck she was sure Olivier would know what to do with his years of experience.

"I will put it to him tonight. It could not harm things between us, the state as our relationship stands..."

A sympathetic smile crossed her lips, gone in an instant. Marital problems were the least pleasant part of one's life, Marguerite felt. Had she known hunger in recent years, she might have thought differently.

"Of course. Otherwise you may tell him he can remain employed where he is and keep cursing his fate. One must make one's own lot in life, regardless of friends, family or even husbands." Standing as if to indicate the interview was over, she extended a hand in very British farewell to the woman. "Consider my offer tonight. If it is acceptable to you, the sooner you start, the better I will feel knowing the house is in good hands."

"I appreciate your kind offer, and will certainly let you know either way of my decision." Amandine took her hand and shook it, rather confused by the formal way she was being treated. She was acting as a servant, surely it would be fitting for others to see her spoken to in kind?

"I hope I return to you tomorrow."
