THE FUNERAL
Subject: Lord John Wexley IV's memorial.
Where: The Wexley family home.
Who: Daphne Wexley
Warnings: N/A
Open to: everyone who would have attended the funeral.

"...Lord John Oliver Wexley IV was buried today, but his spirit will live on in the rest of us... Amen.." finished the priest as he crossed the grave and then there was silence for a few moments. The first noise came from Lady Wexley, letting out a bellow of sobs that was obviously for show but no one would dare confront her about it. Daphne stood in between her brother, Johnny, and Daniel Perkins, trying her best to hold in any emotions that were fighting their way to the surface. Tears streamed down her face, but she made no noise, simply stared straight ahead and made eye contact with no one.

The party moved to the Wexley's family home where the guests were able to meet, discuss, and remember the passing of a very important man. Refreshments had been set up next to a rather large painting of John Wexley IV. Plenty of chairs and sofa's and places for people to sit and converse. Though, the object of the after party was to uplift the deceased and speak about him, but like any other party, everyone had their own objectives as to being there.

Daphne stood at the picture of her father, holding the glass of wine that Daniel had given her, not moving. She didn't to move, show emotion, talk, eat or drink. Knowing, though, that her mother was pretending to be completely beside herself, it was up to Daphne to be the hostess. Thank God for Johnny, though. He took up most of the duties himself.

"No, I'm afraid I didn't know him at all." Aimé said, again feeling even worse for having spilt his drink on the other man. He hurried to finish his half of the conversation before Demetri got the wrong idea and believed him to be an interlope come for the free food and drink offered at this sort of occasion. "I came with the Hurst's. I am staying with them in their townhouse. Lord Hurst thought it rude to leave me there."

"Did you know Lord Wexley well?" He asked, worried he might have offended the man more.

Demetri smiled. "Well it would be rude to just leave a guest at one's house. I'm just sorry you had to come out on such a somber occasion. But I do hope you are enjoying yourself with the Hurst's. They are good people." Demetri paused, trying to not look so sad as he spoke. "The Blakes and Wexleys are well acquainted. I've known Daphne and Johnny practically our whole lives. Lord Wexley was.... he was a very good man."

"That's what I've heard everyone say," Aimé said, looking round at all the sad faces in the room. "It seems he will be missed."

"There's been far too much death lately I'm afraid, something I don't think we ever can get used to. Lord Wexley did a lot of good and yes, he will be very much missed." Demetri smiled a little more, not wanting to dwell too much to make the other so sad. "How do you know Lord Hurst and come to stay with them? I hope you're enjoying yourself in England."

Aimé nodded. He certainly understood the man's feelings on death, all his memories of life in France were tainted by it.

"I knew a friend of Lord Hurst's and he introduced us. Lord Hurst took me under his wing so to say, he is helping me navigate the English upper-classes. Without a friend I would be quite lost." He said, smiling warmly. Not the truth, not at at all, but he could hardly say he was Lord Hurst's bed companion. "England is very nice. I dislike the weather but the food is not as bad as everyone told me, but then I hear anyone who is anyone had a French chef."

"Ah well it is good to have assistance in that. I've grown up among the upper-classes and quickly frankly, they still confuse me," Demetri said. Maybe it was because he was French and reminded him far too much of Alexandre, but Demetri found himself liking the young Mr Laurent more and more. "I'm afraid our weather is like that. I firmly believe that unless you're born here, the weather is never likable. And French chefs are good, but nothing beats a good meal on the Left Bank, does it?"

Aimé smiled, glancing around the room again quickly. "I'm afraid," He said after a pause. "That I have never eaten on your Left Bank."

Demetri smiled at him. Is that what foreigners called the banks of the Thames? He wondered. "No, it was your Left Bank," said Demetri softly. "I went to school in Paris for a time, at the Sorbonne. It was... it was a few years ago," he said trying not to think of the rest of his time in Paris. "You have a very beautiful country Mr. Laurent."

"Oh!" Aimé said, face reddening. "I am sorry, I...I've been preoccupied. I feel like I shouldn't be here, like I'm intruding on the family's grief. Thank you, though, for complimenting my country. I'm afraid I do not know if I may call it mine now though."

Demetri put hand on Aimé's arm and smiled at the others troubled look. "It's alright. No reason to apologise. I should say being in a new country would preoccupy anyone. You are being a friend to the Hursts and I'm sure they appreciate your company as well." Demetri hated making people upset unless the situation warranted it, and this certainly was not one of those. "You're quite welcome. And it is France, you are French. I think no matter what, it will always be your country. Things happening now.... will pass. I'm sure of it."

"I hope you are right about that." Aimé said, smiling again now although privately he did not know if he if he would wish to return to France should the opportunity present itself.

Demetri smiled at Aimé and nodded. "I hope I am too. I really do. But as long as you're here, I hope you enjoy yourself and that England treats you well."
