An Invitation to the French Ambassador's Ball
Subject: The Ambassadors Ball
Where: The French Embassy
Who: Léon Belmont, the French Ambassador to the English court
Warnings: none as yet
Open to: All (all players may attend either as invited guests of the ambassador, as servants or guests of those invited, as staff, or as gate-crashers.)

The ballroom of the Embassy was already growing busy, and when Citizen Belmont paused for a moment besides one of the large windows, he could see yet more carriages pulling up outside, wreathed in the mist blowing in from the river.

The quartet had been playing now for a good half an hour, new French tunes as well as those the English favoured. His staff was busy handing out good French wine, and then refilling those glasses when they were drained.

It was going to be a good evening, and not only in the eyes of the party-goers. With some of England’s most prominent aristos on the guest list, and some than some newly arrived French nationals, tonight would be a night of information gathering, of sizing up the opposition, and perhaps even ensuring some of those French escapees were returned to face justice.

"My father is a merchant, rather well-connected, I've come to find out," came the smooth reply. "He could not attend tonight, so I was sent in his place, so as not to offend by having no representation of our family here."

Aimé nodded. It sounded very plusable, after all the Ambassador had invited Mercedes and he was a merchant. He relaxed a little. Maybe this simply was all with the intention of forming new alliances in England and not with spying on those escaped from France.

"I am sorry to hear your father could not attend. Is he unwell?"

He was believed, not really questioned further. Oh, his father's state of health, yes, but that was an expected question.

"My sister is ill," he said quietly, a touch of worry pervading his voice. Completely false, but sounding sincere was another art. "Father felt it best that he stay with her. Doesn't quite trust doctors alone with her."

He smiled slightly, saying genially, "I hope your family is well, sir?"

"I can't say I blame your father for his distrust." Aimé agreed.

He gave a small shrug of his shoulders, looking around the room for his brother's face in the crowd. "They are doing as well as can be expected. The English weather doesn't agree with father. He has caught a chill and couldn't attend."

"Ah, yes," the other murmured quietly. "I suppose it is rather a change. I was in France for a very short time, but I gathered the climate could be quite different than England often has to offer."

He smiled a bit. "I hope your father is back to full health again soon."
