An Invitation to the French Ambassador's Ball
Subject: The Ambassadors Ball
Where: The French Embassy
Who: Léon Belmont, the French Ambassador to the English court
Warnings: none as yet
Open to: All (all players may attend either as invited guests of the ambassador, as servants or guests of those invited, as staff, or as gate-crashers.)

The ballroom of the Embassy was already growing busy, and when Citizen Belmont paused for a moment besides one of the large windows, he could see yet more carriages pulling up outside, wreathed in the mist blowing in from the river.

The quartet had been playing now for a good half an hour, new French tunes as well as those the English favoured. His staff was busy handing out good French wine, and then refilling those glasses when they were drained.

It was going to be a good evening, and not only in the eyes of the party-goers. With some of England’s most prominent aristos on the guest list, and some than some newly arrived French nationals, tonight would be a night of information gathering, of sizing up the opposition, and perhaps even ensuring some of those French escapees were returned to face justice.

"Simply divine," the young man replied, raising the champagne glass slightly, in the fashion of a modest toast, before taking a sip from it again.

"If I had heard only good things, sir, I would be quite worried indeed," he added, smiling a faint bit again. "The French are not often popular because the general public of the English has very poor taste. I, on the other hand, tend to rather enjoy the company of most of those from France I meet."

Léon smiled widely, tipping his head again in a small bow of thanks. "I'm glad you like it."

Léon raised an eyebrow again, and smiled, pulling a thick, black-wrapped cigarette from his pocket, lighting it and holding it between his lips. "A wealthy Englishman with revolutionary leanings, Monsieur? What an interesting man you are."

"A merchant's son who has had some run-ins of his own with the aristocracy his father panders to," the youth said lightly, making a dismissive gesture.

He could only hope that making his sympathies known, even if the majority of the way he expressed said sympathies was a lie, would inspire a bit of mercy were he found out as one here without invitation.

"Ah, I see. A discontented son and a father with no sense. Have you made your concerns heard yet?" He asked, taking another draw on the cigarette, and smiling slightly, "Have you ever been to France, Monsieur?"

"It is not wise for an only son with male cousins to make his discontent known while his father lives," the young man replied with a simple shrug. He smiled at the question. "I have. My father thought a bit of sailing would do me good, so he sent me off on a merchant ship for a short voyage. I spent only a few days in France but found it highly enjoyable."

Léon smiled at this. "A revolutionary looking to inherit his father's merchant business? Very more interesting, Monsieur." He chuckled. "Perhaps you would be better to find yourself a different line of work? Brush up a little on your French, and maybe I could find something for you to do that would enable you another few days in France? Did you make it to Paris? Such a beautiful city." Although, not so any more, not now the grand buildings were splashed with blood. But he was wiser than to voice those opinions.

He couldn't help but be extremely interested now. Such a post would take references, surely, but he could get enough money to find respectable-looking men to vouch for him. But a place in France...

"I did not make it to Paris, sadly, but I met a young man from there, and we were fast friends. He spoke very highly of it as well," he explained, smiling a bit. "I can read a good deal of French, as he and I write one another often, and he likes to write parts in French with a translation provided." He thought about his words a moment too late, and another stream of curses went through his head. Even a merchant's son would have some sort of tutor for French, rather than a young man he wrote letters to!

Damn. However, he did his best not to let his smile falter. Maybe if he pretended all was well... the other wouldn't realize how he'd slipped. A slim possibility, but he would attempt it!

"Well, there are always more opportunities, especially for a young man such as yourself." Léon smiled, taking the cigarette from his lips. "Many more. Hopefully you will be able to return to France before all the excitement is over and meet your friend again. I imagine you correct his English for him, no?" Léon smiles, remembering his own lessons in the fearful language.

"I know someone, a member of my staff, who would be happy to help your polish your French, Monsieur Heywood. It is difficult to prefect a language when one only reads and writes. If you were interested, perhaps we could arrange something?"

"You really are most kind, sir," Tolly said with a smile. "It would be wonderful to get to go back to France." A small nod of the head. "I do, best as I can. There are variations, o'course." The faintest slip of that lower-class accent, a tell-tale mark of being solely used to casual conversation, but it was gone a moment later.

"Y'," another slip, but quickly corrected, "you do, sir? That would be quite excellent. I am very certain we could come to an arrangement, yes." After all, as long as the sum, as he figured it would, as so much did, come down to money, was not extremely high, he could manage to pay for it.

Léon smiled, the slips noted, but he could deal with that in a moment. "Would you perhaps like to discuss the matter in the morning? I would be happy to arrange things officially with you then."

"I would like that very much indeed," Bartholomew said with a smile. "You are most kind, sir." He bowed a bit again, quite sincere now. The chance to truly learn French with the possibility of returning to France for even a short while... It was too good an opportunity to pass up.
