An Invitation to the French Ambassador's Ball
Subject: The Ambassadors Ball
Where: The French Embassy
Who: Léon Belmont, the French Ambassador to the English court
Warnings: none as yet
Open to: All (all players may attend either as invited guests of the ambassador, as servants or guests of those invited, as staff, or as gate-crashers.)

The ballroom of the Embassy was already growing busy, and when Citizen Belmont paused for a moment besides one of the large windows, he could see yet more carriages pulling up outside, wreathed in the mist blowing in from the river.

The quartet had been playing now for a good half an hour, new French tunes as well as those the English favoured. His staff was busy handing out good French wine, and then refilling those glasses when they were drained.

It was going to be a good evening, and not only in the eyes of the party-goers. With some of England’s most prominent aristos on the guest list, and some than some newly arrived French nationals, tonight would be a night of information gathering, of sizing up the opposition, and perhaps even ensuring some of those French escapees were returned to face justice.

It was perhaps a mistake the come here. Aimé had not voiced his concerns in the carriage ride over, nor before when his brother had chosen the fine clothes he wore tonight. Aimé fingered the elegant embroidery around the cuff of his jacket, tugging at it a little conspicuously.

This had to be come sort of plot devised by the ambassador to lull them into a sense of security. Even here in England Aimé did not feel safe yet.

Mercedes was also nervous. His invitation was still tucked neatly into his pocket, but he had not looked at it since this morning, and even then he had felt trepidation at the idea of walking, openly, into the Embassy again after his brush with capture earlier in the week.

His nerves, at least, allowed him a few extra minutes wait outside of the building, until he saw the familiar figure exit the coach, followed by an even more familiar, and welcome silhouette. "Mesieurs!" He calls, approaching them, and flashes a smile to Aimé, especially as the boy's elder brother has already climbed the steps, unwittingly allowing the two some privacy for a moment.

"Mercedes!" Aimé cried out, a little suprised to see him here. Of all the people he would have ecpected the ambassadore to invite Mercedes had not been on the list. "My dear friend, who invited you? Not my brother I hope. I do not think this is the place or company for your story of how you helped us escape from France."

He grabbed hold of Mercedes's arm, leading him off a little way and looked at him in all seriousness now. "Mercedes. Do you think he knows?"

"No, not him. The Ambassador." Mercedes says, pulling the invitation from his pocket, handing it over to the youth.

"Knows? I do not believe so. Suspects, maybe. Perhaps he asked us here to watch us, to see if we give anything away?" And with that thought, Mercedes pulls Aimé, by the shoulder, even further away from the steps into the Embassy. "We could leave now, reject the invitation?"

Aimé read the invitation quickly, colour draning from his face.

He looked up at Mercedes and then glaced to look at the gaurds at the entrance. "Perhapse you could, but my brother is already there. If I don't show up it will look suspicious and more than that he will be angry." He re-reads the invitation, trying to think of something they can do. "I think you should go. Maybe he is expecting you to refuse it, it may conform his suspicions rather than disway them. If you go and then act as if you do nothing more than import and export good he'll have nothing but a wasted invitation."

Mercedes nods, taking the invitation back from Aimé and folding it carefully, the movements so as to delay any final decision. "And what about you? He must know that you escaped somehow..." He paused, also glancing back at the soldiery, "The Embassy is French land... he could arrest us there and have us sent to Paris." He begins, and then shakes his head, "But not in front of so many people, he would not."

Aimé goes pale for a second, but then shakes his head, not willing to let himself by scared by an invertation to a party.
"I don't think that is his plan. If it was, why has he invited so many English Lords? No, he'd make a spectacul of himself infront of all sociaty if he tried that here today. I think this is about making conections. I am sure he means to frighten us, to tell us he is watching us but I also think he is too smart to act that rashly."

"In that case, I suppose it's best not to decline?" Mercedes says, glancing up as another carriage pulls up outside the Embassy building. He sighs. "But I still don't believe that this is just an innocent invitation. We have to be careful, Amié... if the Ambassador suspects I brought your family here..."

"I know, I know." Aimé cuts him off. "We'll just have to pretend we don't know each other for one night. I'll keep Antoine away"

Adelaide was doing her best to keep a distance between herself and her nurse. And so she was wandering the ballroom, trying her hardest to keep a distance between herself and certain passing strangers. It had been some time since she had last left her apartment in Paris and so she had all sorts of nerves building up inside her. Nevertheless she spotted the gentleman; who perhaps looked almost as nervous as she felt.

"It seems there are a fair few who seem to be anticipating some sort of trouble tonight," she said gently, her lifeless eyes never meeting his. "Won't you agree, Mister?" Finally she looked up, her usual lost expression on her face.

Aimé had been on edge since he had set foot in the ballroom, despite what he had told Mercedes he could not quite bring himself to believe they were safe.
He jumped a little when the young woman spoke to him, having not realised she had crossed the room to address him until that moment.

He met her gaze with one of his own, worried although he smiled.

"I do agree, Madam. I must admit I am one of them." He bowed low and took her hand to kiss. "Forgive me for not introducing myself, I am Aimé Laurent."

Adelaide jumped slightly out of habit when he jumped. It was usually the other way around with her, somebody approaching and startling her. Nervously she smiled, allowing him to take her hand. It was a rare occurrence for her to have people make any contact with her, as she was rumored to be a curse to any male who she approached.

"A pleasure Mister Laurent," she said gently. "I am Adelaide Kinsley." She decided to give the name of her last husband, as she didn't feel the need to perhaps stir up any curiosity if perhaps he had heard stories that accompanied her maiden name.

"I must admit, sir, your nervousness is a reassurance to me. As I would hate to be alone in suspecting danger around every turn tonight."

"Kinsley?" He said, the name reminding him of something and, when he remembered, an expression of regret passed across his face. "Madam, I was so sorry to hear of your husband's passing, especially give the circumstances of his death. If there is anything I or my family can do for you while you are in England don't hesitate to ask."

Aimé glanced past her, to the Ambassador - watching him move from guest to guest.
"I am glad then I am not alone. What danger do you expect, Madam? I cannot help feeling this to be a trap of some sort and yet to refuse...it would have appeared I had something to hide."

Adelaide had been about to inquire as to which husband's death he was referring to, but thought that to be a morbid question, even in her taste. "Thank you for your compassion, Mister Laurent," she said politely.

She followed his gaze to the Ambassador. "I suppose it is just the lack of security that one feels when they are thrust into a crowd such as this one after having spent so many months alone." Curiously she looked over to him, as she was partially naive to the troubles in the world, a result of the fairytale fantasy she had created in her head. "Ah, I cannot say I feel the same way, Mister Laurent. However, perhaps that is because I have nothing to hide." She said this as innocently as possible, trying to sound more observation rather than as if she was accusing him of something.

"It is nothing, Madam. We must stick together during these most difficult times, no?" He said, smiling, trying to move the conversation away from the obviously painful topic.

Aimé laughed, more for the benefit of those overhearing than amusement. "Neither do I, Madam, but I feel the pressures of courtly life even here, the need to keep ones reputation and perception spotless. Avoiding a ball such as this, even with the difficulties in France, would no doubt cause gossip." He smiles at her kindly. "I am sorry you find the crowds a strain, Madam. I hope you are making friends, though. Things never look so fearful when you are surrounded by friends."

Adelaide nodded in agreement. "I suppose it is more difficult for a gentleman to keep his status this day than it has been in the past. One must be careful who he is seen talking and what he is heard saying, yes?" The young woman gave him a look of understanding. "Perhaps that is why so few are comfortable tonight." At his last words she looked over towards the Ambassador again, as if silently indicating him. "I do believe I have mad a friend or too," she admitted before glancing around the large room. "And I am certain my nurse is somewhere not far from me, in case I manage to get myself into any trouble."

"Quite, Madam." Aimé agrees, looking around the people in the room. How many would be willing to turn spy for the ambassador's money? How many already had? "I am sure no trouble would come to you, and if it is any consolation, Madam, you have made a friend in me at least."

"Monsieur Laurent?" Léon greeted with a bright smile. "I'm glad you could make it tonight. And your brother." He adds, having noticed the earlier entrance of the boy's elder sibling. "Although I thought you had two, is one unwell?" The ambassador asks, looking concerned.

Aime's face flushed red and he raised his hand, unable to help himself, so angry at the ambassador for daring to bring up his brother in the first place and then for insulting his family. It did not matter that it would be a foolish thing to do, hitting him would at least give him some satisfaction in the matter.
