An Invitation to the French Ambassador's Ball
Subject: The Ambassadors Ball
Where: The French Embassy
Who: Léon Belmont, the French Ambassador to the English court
Warnings: none as yet
Open to: All (all players may attend either as invited guests of the ambassador, as servants or guests of those invited, as staff, or as gate-crashers.)

The ballroom of the Embassy was already growing busy, and when Citizen Belmont paused for a moment besides one of the large windows, he could see yet more carriages pulling up outside, wreathed in the mist blowing in from the river.

The quartet had been playing now for a good half an hour, new French tunes as well as those the English favoured. His staff was busy handing out good French wine, and then refilling those glasses when they were drained.

It was going to be a good evening, and not only in the eyes of the party-goers. With some of England’s most prominent aristos on the guest list, and some than some newly arrived French nationals, tonight would be a night of information gathering, of sizing up the opposition, and perhaps even ensuring some of those French escapees were returned to face justice.

The evening was still in full swing below them but Nell was feeling a little worse for ware after his seventh or so glass of champagne. A quick lie down in the Ambassador’s bedroom to sleep off the alcohol and he should be fine in a hour or so to return to entertaining. He turned the corner, almost bumping into Harry and the man accompanying him.
Although he was drunk Nell could still make out clearly the keys in Harry’s hand and he hardly needed a detective to put together the idea that they had been in that room a few moments ago.

“What where you doing in there?” He demanded. “That’s Léon’s room. Harry you promised when I gave you the key...you said you wouldn’t use your lock picks in here.”

On seeing the boy Eward heaved a great sigh of annoyance, rolling his eyes. He had no patience for dogsbodies such as him. "And no doubt he told you the grass is greener on the other side and that rainbows have a pot of gold at the end - do not believe everything you hear. Are you drunk?" he added as an afterthought. Best to confuse the lad, rather than humour him.

Harry also sighed softly, dusting off his hands after slipping the lock-picks back into their place in a pocket. "Nell, you are meant to be working downstairs." He chastises, not willing to let the boy off too lightly in front of Eward. "Forgive me, Eward, it is normally a boy who knows his place." The last few words are delivered pointedly. "Don't you, Nell? I would head back down, if I were you. Otherwise you'll loose this evening's pay."

“I...” Nell stammered, unsure how to react to the threat of loss of pay. “But I’ve done what Léon asked me to do and I want to lie down.”

"Oh? And what did Mr Ambassador ask you to do?" said Eward poignantly, raising an eyebrow in curiosity. He was playing about with the lad but it didn't harm to get what little information he could out of him. "You want to know what we were doing in there, and we want to know what you are doing for the Ambassador..."

Nell looked past him to Harry, almost pleadingly. "I was...um...The ambassador...I did what Harry arranged." He finished, unsure how much Harry had told his friend about his business arrangement with the ambassador.

Eward's grin widened. "Oh Harry I do believe we need to talk..." he said ominously, his smile almost sinister in the way he looked at his friend. "Go on boy. Forget we were here and I shall not spread word of your great unprofessionalism. Go!"

"Talk about what, Eward?" Harry asked, only glancing up when he had finished picking the dirt from under his fingertips. "There was no need to send the boy away." He looks towards Nell before the boy runs off, "Go and sit down somewhere, I'll find you in a minute."

If Eward was going to make a comment about Harry's business dealings, that certainly was not going to go down well. Especially as Harry could already see the hurt in the boy's eyes.

"He is just a boy, a drunk and careless one at that. It's best to tell him to shoo. Be glad I did not lose my rag completely I have no patience for things like him, pushing their noses and being self-righteous... makes my skin crawl." With a shudder Eward then turned his attention to his friend. "Your arrangment, Harry? What has he been doing for you?"

"Drunk, perhaps, but not careless. Or self-righteous. He knows what is is doing, even if he doesn't always understand the meanings of what he hears and sees. He is useful. More than useful." Harry rebuked, "I would not employee a boy who only had one use."

Harry shrugs. "The Ambassador pays for him to visit. Perhaps he likes to listen to the boy sing?" He says with a shrug, "All I know is that he brings me information I need. And I'd rather you didn't disrupt my other business arrangements. You aren't my only client."

"Yes, yes, yes, I know they need to practically be multitalented for you to even look at them." Secretly he wondered what uses the boy could even have for himself but he did not share it with Harry.

"I doubt he pays for that service alone," he muttered, not caring if the man heard him or not. He was looking around ready to go on another pilfering spree when Harry said about not being the only one. Shooting a faux-hurt look in his direction, Eward said "Harry! You hurt my feelings. I thought I was your favourite. Never mind, I can always find someone else with lock pickers. If you want to tend to the young lad please do. I do not know why you would, but you do tend to mother him quite a bit. I am carrying on down this corridor. If I do not return to the ball in ten minutes, assume the worst."

"Even if I knew what else happens in the Ambassador's own rooms, I couldn't tell you. But rumours say that there are several skills the boy's mastered." Harry said, smiling slightly, "Why, are you jealous? I didn't think you had an interest in nubile young men, Eward."

Harry let himself looked shocked. "You have feelings to hurt? Bloody Mary." But he pats the other on the shoulder in a somewhat comforting way. "There there. You might not be my favourite, but be assured at least that I have not had a favourite for a very long time. To me, you are just the most amusing client presently on my books." Which was true enough. With Eward nearby, you could be sure of an evening full of entertainment, even if you were almost certain at some points it would cost your your freedom, if not one or two limbs.

"If I did, do you think I would tell you about it?" he joked, nudging him with his arm in a manly sort of manner. It was true. He would not tell a soul if he was suddenly into... that. Thankfully his desires still lay in the female form.

"I do! Hidden, deep down, below in my guts somewhere. And before you say it yes, I do have guts." He took a deep breath as if he were still upset about the whole charade of not being Fisher's favourite, shaking his head. "I suppose I shall console myself in the fact that I amuse you, even though it should truly be the other way around. It is what I pay you for, you know. If I find you are using me for your jollies I shall start charging." With a flash of a grin Eward again nudged him in the arm. It was an odd relationship. Though Harry was significantly less than him in the social classes, Eward felt a bond with him. It was almost as if they were brothers, but that was strange in itself as Eward had never even been this close to his siblings when they were alive.

"Be good, then, sir, and I shall bid you adieu. Oh, and by the way - I wasn't joking about that ten minutes."

"I don't know- even if you didn't I would hear about it soon enough. Don't think that someone isn't paying me to keep an eye on you." He smirked, although he didn't enjoy being nudged as much as Eward thought he should.

"I know you have guts." Harry responded with his own nudge in the other's stomach. "Do you think I can't hear them when they rumble?" He teased, "But don't worry, Eward, I would tell you if you needed to charge me. All if fair in business, after all." He said with a small smile. "But I do not mother the boy. I just look after my best workers. And many of them need it, after half an hour with you."

"Very well. I shall keep my eye on the time. But I won't be sympathetic if you get mauled by one of those tit-bit fed monsters. I doubt the Ambassador simply keeps them for decoration." He says, giving a mockingly theatrical bow. "Til later, my lord."
