An Invitation to the French Ambassador's Ball
Subject: The Ambassadors Ball
Where: The French Embassy
Who: Léon Belmont, the French Ambassador to the English court
Warnings: none as yet
Open to: All (all players may attend either as invited guests of the ambassador, as servants or guests of those invited, as staff, or as gate-crashers.)

The ballroom of the Embassy was already growing busy, and when Citizen Belmont paused for a moment besides one of the large windows, he could see yet more carriages pulling up outside, wreathed in the mist blowing in from the river.

The quartet had been playing now for a good half an hour, new French tunes as well as those the English favoured. His staff was busy handing out good French wine, and then refilling those glasses when they were drained.

It was going to be a good evening, and not only in the eyes of the party-goers. With some of England’s most prominent aristos on the guest list, and some than some newly arrived French nationals, tonight would be a night of information gathering, of sizing up the opposition, and perhaps even ensuring some of those French escapees were returned to face justice.

Melisande arrived at the ball trailing just behind her mother and father. The last thing she wanted to do was attend another social event, but her father insisted she go, and she knew better than to go against his word.

She'd been dressed in he finest blue gown for the occasion and ordered to chat with any man who seemed the lest bit interested. Monsieur Auclair had been trying to marry off his daughter for years now, but some how men never seemed to stay interested long enough. This was partly due to Melisande's driving them all off with her harsh opinions of them, but she hadn't ever really told her father this.

The second her father was distracted, Melisande quickly found a dark corner to stand in where she intended to stay the rest of the night.

Pretty young women, Harry knew, did not often sneak away into the shadows as soon as the opportunity arose. They certainly didn't do so with at least mentioning something to their elders about her purpose and destination. At least, not in these classes. Those who he had grown up around had been free to go wherever they liked, whenever they liked, as no one was likely to kidnap a penniless street waif.

She had sparked his interest, and so he followed her, moving swiftly into the shadows at the side of the room, trying to remain silent until he stood almost alongside her. "Who are you hiding from?" He asked, voice a whisper.

Melie was a bit startled when the man appeared next to her. She jumped a bit but regained her composure quickly. She might have been a bit embarrassed if she cared what this man thought of her, but she didn't.

"Everyone" she said candidly. "I hate events like this"
This was how she warded all the men off, no one liked women who were honest like Melisande. She was much too outspoken to make a proper wife.

"Then, why are you hiding here instead of leaving?" Harry asked, leaning back against the wall. "As long as your back before..." He nods in the direction of what he assumes are her parents, "they go, what's the problem?"

"The thought never crossed my mind" Melisande laughed a bit at the idea. It did seem like a great idea, but there was one problem.
"but I don't think it's safe for a young woman to go wondering around by herself at this hour"

Marguerite was fond of dark corners. It was where she used to meet the most interesting men, but that was France. In England, it seemed only young girls who sought a moment's peace were to be found there.

Amused, she decided to join the young women, even if it meant disturbing her peace.

"Men are less likely to impose if you have a female companion," she murmured, shielding the movement of her lips from the rest of the assembly by means of her fan. "Suitors all the more so. It seems we are both in need."

Melisande laughed quietly at the other woman's statement.
"I suppose we're lucky to have found each other then" she muttered back.
Though really Melisande was hiding from everyone. Suitors were the worst, but she found most of the women at those types of parties to be very dull too.

"Least I am wrong," Marguerite noted. "And my presence is keeping you from some bright-eyed young man you seek to meet behind your father's back." It didn't seem like the case, but then it was hard to make assumptions about a woman's character.

"Oh, I wouldn't dare" Melisande said, she did her best to act shocked though that was exactly the kind of thing she might do had she any interest in any of the men who went to the ambassador's party.
