An Invitation to the French Ambassador's Ball
Subject: The Ambassadors Ball
Where: The French Embassy
Who: Léon Belmont, the French Ambassador to the English court
Warnings: none as yet
Open to: All (all players may attend either as invited guests of the ambassador, as servants or guests of those invited, as staff, or as gate-crashers.)

The ballroom of the Embassy was already growing busy, and when Citizen Belmont paused for a moment besides one of the large windows, he could see yet more carriages pulling up outside, wreathed in the mist blowing in from the river.

The quartet had been playing now for a good half an hour, new French tunes as well as those the English favoured. His staff was busy handing out good French wine, and then refilling those glasses when they were drained.

It was going to be a good evening, and not only in the eyes of the party-goers. With some of England’s most prominent aristos on the guest list, and some than some newly arrived French nationals, tonight would be a night of information gathering, of sizing up the opposition, and perhaps even ensuring some of those French escapees were returned to face justice.

"You are under the impression that my father was invited as a professional rather than as simply a guest. I, however, merely take note of the silver as it is an exquisite quality, and I have been taught to have an eye for such things." Casual, simple, and that smile did not waver now. "Or do you think that a merchant could not possibly rank among those invited?"

He could only hope there were other merchants here. Surely there were. He could not, he assured himself, have misplaced this crowd so much. They were mostly high ranking, but surely there were a few from the middle and higher rungs of the middle class. Those that seemed to have the potential...

"Well, you are the only one here, Tolly." It was a lie. He was pretty sure it was, at least, judging from the conversations he'd overheard earlier in the evening. But, the way Harry saw it, if Barty or Tolly or whatever his name was, was really was the son of a merchant, and the oldest son likely to inherit, he would know the faces of some of those here tonight, those who were the rivals of his father's business. And if he didn't? He was either a terrible heir, or, more likely now in Harry's mind, he was a con.

"Am I?" He kept his tone light, airy. "How very peculiar. I could have sworn I saw familiar faces around this evening, but, of course, you must be correct. Quite curious, I suppose." He seemed to pause for a moment, then offered, "I was certain that I saw Mr. Ernest James here. Did not speak with him, of course, as he and Father are not on good terms." Really, he'd avoided being seen by Mr. James for fear of being recognized as the young man that had chatted up his daughter's nurse..

He eyed the other man carefully. Usually, not always but often, those that could catch him at his game were the ones who knew the way to play themselves... But he would not risk provocation by even implying such a thing.

Harry's expression did not waiver. It was the cold, unbelieving gaze of a man who had heard it all, and was listening now if only to see how deep the whole would end up. And then, perhaps to see if the young man could dig himself out of it. "Really? But the sins of the father are not the sins of the son, as you surely know. I am sure, if you are to inherit, it would be wise for you to make amends? Come along, I will introduce the two of you." Harry offered, his expressionless face breaking into a smile.

"We have met, briefly, before now, and I am afraid I made no better impression on him than my father. Besides, while you are very kind to offer such a thing, I doubt that two silver-merchants would get along very well, as we are rivals in the business world, and I, at least, am quite concerned with making money." It was true enough. His main interest was money. He just wasn't entirely honest about how he made it. Besides, that was a good enough excuse for not wanting to meet the man.
