An Invitation to the French Ambassador's Ball
Subject: The Ambassadors Ball
Where: The French Embassy
Who: Léon Belmont, the French Ambassador to the English court
Warnings: none as yet
Open to: All (all players may attend either as invited guests of the ambassador, as servants or guests of those invited, as staff, or as gate-crashers.)

The ballroom of the Embassy was already growing busy, and when Citizen Belmont paused for a moment besides one of the large windows, he could see yet more carriages pulling up outside, wreathed in the mist blowing in from the river.

The quartet had been playing now for a good half an hour, new French tunes as well as those the English favoured. His staff was busy handing out good French wine, and then refilling those glasses when they were drained.

It was going to be a good evening, and not only in the eyes of the party-goers. With some of England’s most prominent aristos on the guest list, and some than some newly arrived French nationals, tonight would be a night of information gathering, of sizing up the opposition, and perhaps even ensuring some of those French escapees were returned to face justice.

Adelaide nodded. "It's quite alright," she said softly. "And yes, I am ill, in a way." It was a mental illness more than anything else. "I have lost three husbands," she said gently. "And it never gets easier."

Nodding sympathetically though she couldn't relate, Marguerite patted her hand. "Time heals all wounds. This too, I'm sure. You are very young and you have endured... I cannot imagine how much loss. But you will recover and you will love again." In another time, when Marguerite might've still had a heart, their places in life might have been one and the same. "Have you any children?"

Adelaide looked down momentarily. "I fear I will not love again," she admitted gently. Sighing softly she took a sip from her champagne before shaking her head slowly. "No, Madame, I have no children." She had, at one point in her life been pregnant, but had lost the unborn child at the abusive hands of her second husband.

"Oh, my dear, you mustn't say that," Marguerite consoled, worrying her bottom lip in commiseration with the young lady whom fate seemed to have cursed so abominably. "Love happens upon us at the most unexpected of times. One does not perish of a broken heart. Would that it were so easy to end a human life..."

"But it is the truth," Adelaide told her. "I am rumored to be a curse to those I love and I feel there are none brave enough to risk death, no matter how strong a love we share."

Her hollow gaze met the woman's for a moment before her expression suddenly changed to one with a hint of wonder in it. Slowly she approached a rosebush and knelt down slightly to take in the scent of one of the buds. "It is lovely out here, yes?" she inquired thoughtfully, her mood seeming to change almost instantly from one of sorrow to one of innocent curiosity.

Marguerite hugged her sides, the nightly chill weaving its way through her thin sleeves and not entirely comfortable with the change in her companion.

"Yes, it is quite beautiful." The Embassy had its attraction, aesthetic or otherwise. "The roses especially..." She trailed off, watching the other woman for a long moment. "Do be careful of the thorns. I wouldn't want you to injure yourself."

Adelaide smiled eerily as she gently touched one of the silky petals of the flower. Just as the other woman gave her warning the young girl jumped back slightly, having caught her finger on a small thorn.

It didn't seem to bother her and she just smiled a little more. "All beautiful things must have their faults," she said gently.

"Oh my dear!" she cried, grasping the other woman's hand when she didn't seem to react to the wound. A small trickle of blood was left on the flower stem, wetness dark in the moonlight.

"Take care..." But Adelaide's eyes were vacant, untroubled. It was almost eerie. "Oh dear, surely that must hurt. Your nurse will never forgive me."

Adelaide smiled strangely again. "It is alright," she said softly when Marguerite took her hand. She smiled a little more and looked down at the blood still on the thorn.

"My nurse will not mind. I am often careless like that, she is used to it by now," she admitted. Sighing she looked down at her finger, it did indeed hurt, but Adelaide let on now signs as to her pain.

Marguerite took her elbow gently, steering her away from the dangerous flowers. Her other hand pressed over Adelaide's, erasing the blood.

"There now, all is well." That was her life, sweep up the pain until you can't see it and pretend it doesn't hurt. What else could you do, but that?

"Would you like to go back inside?"

Adelaide watched her curiously for a moment before nodding. "It is a bit chilly out here, yes?" she said gently, as if nothing had happened. Her empty gaze remained on the other woman before she finished her champagne with a long sip.

"Yes... quite." She frowned, confused by the other woman's response. Such a strange and changing character...

Leading her back toward the ball, Marguerite recovered her smile, deciding that strange did not necessarily mean bad. The woman exuded a warmth and presence that made up for it.

"I might call on you, if it is not too much trouble. Perhaps we might visit other gardens when the weather is not so against us."

Adelaide smiled a little more, looking lost as usual. She followed Marguerite back into the ballroom, before nodding. Her smile grew and she looked at the other woman happily.

"No, that would be no trouble at all," she said softly. "It is always lovely to get out and enjoy the fresh air," she added, looking pleased for once in her life.

"Excellent," Marguerite laughed, patting her arm companionably. "Then it will be my pleasure." At the far end of the room, her eyes met the nurse's. "Oh dear, I seem to have been found out. I shall leave you in good hands."
