Subject: Lucien is looking for work
Where: The Bridge Theater
Who: Lucien Régnier
Warnings: None
Open to: Harry Fisher, those at the Theater
It took Lucien only a few days of searching for work to realize that his current status in England was rather precarious. He’d been here for weeks, and Lucien was unwilling to just return to France like this, with no concrete news of his brother. On one hand, very few legitimate employers would feel the need to hire a French national with no references or previous work experience; likewise, considering his brother’s political leanings, there were many positions that Lucien dared not consider.
One morning, he exited his rented room at the inn and went downstairs to tell the innkeeper that he was looking for work; Lucien asked the man if he knew of any places that were currently looking for employment.
“What sort of work are you looking for, boy?” the innkeeper asked gruffly, scanning Lucien from head to toe and back up. Lucien did not particularly care for the man’s manners, but the inn was not located in the best part of London—his funds had been running low—and he was, after all, currently asking for the man’s help.
“Anything,” he answered quickly.
Perhaps his desperation showed in his voice, or perhaps the innkeeper had a certain preconception about young boys who showed up in his establishment alone—either way, the man smiled strangely. “Anything, eh? Well, there’s this place on Lower Pitt Street, it’s called the Bridge Theater. Ask for Harry Fisher.”
“This… Monsieur Fisher would not mind if I do not have much experience?”
The innkeeper laughed aloud this time. “No. You can be trained for that sort of work.”
Lucien had no idea what ‘that sort of work’ comprised, nor did he quite like the speculative gleam in the innkeeper’s eye, but he procured directions to the theater and thanked the man politely. Nearly half an hour later, after several wrong turns and missed streets, Lucien arrived at the theater—he approached the door, knocking quickly.
